I am heading to Scotland this afternoon for work and due to some really poor planning on my part fly back to East Mids, landing at 8.00pm on Wednesday.

I had resigned myself to missing the match, but decided yesterday I can't miss this in case results do go our way and we do get promoted. I bought a ticket this morning and will probably get there about 9.15. I have persuaded a colleague to drive me back from East Mids and he is going to drop me at the ground to save parking time, I will meet my daughters who will drive down from home in East Yorks.

I am feeling the Greenwich Blade pain of late arrival here, but it is actually more about the possible celebrations (after 6 years of pain) than the game itself.

So how late have you ever knowingly planned to arrive at a match?

I forgot a that a pre-season friendly was kicking off at 12:30pm and I missed the entire match as I thought it was a 3pm kick off. DOH!

Sept 1972. SUSC Dronfield Branch's coach (Bransons) broke down as we were about to set off for the game at Norwich. A replacement coach was found but we knew we would miss the first half. We found out that the first half had been goalless which cheered us up a bit. We arrived at the ground in time to see Billy Dearden open the scoring (60th minute I think). Near the end of the match David Cross equalized with a header

If not for modern technology, I would have missed a 1230 last season. It was only the BBC Sport team news notification that made me realise and I had a mad dash to the match.

The latest I have ever been, is when a cup match I was playing in went to extra time and I missed most of the first half against Chelsea 06/07.

Mid 80's. Left Rotherham at 4pm to drive down for a 7.45pm k off at Plymouth.
Got there at h/time and score 0-0.
They charged me full price.
They scored with about 10 mins to go and so we lost 1-0.
Set off straight back home after game.

I'd check with the club that the turnstiles will still be open at that time? or, make alternative arrangements to get i ground.

The more concerning question is.....how would you not know you'd got to the match!!???
Huge building, thousands of people singing and shouting, plod everywhere....!!!????

FA Cup Semi Final 1993 - due to a ticketing mix up at Wembley we got into the ground around 5 minutes after kick off. I'm still confused as to how we lost 1-1. In fact, why did the game even go to extra time when we were 1-0 up!

Shrewsbury in the early 1980's

I drove my clapped out banger down there and couldn't find the stadium anywhere

We could see it

But we couldn't get close to it due to ridiculous roadworks and diversions that had us driving around Shrewsbury in every direction except the direction we wanted to go

In the end we dumped the car on some waste ground about a mile away and walked

We got in at half time and lost 4-2 (I think)

Charlton Athletic, early 90's, for a cup game I think.. on a Sunday..

Before sat navs, set off about 3 hours before ko.. not enough time...

Then we realised they were playing at Upton Park... the valley was being re-developed!!.. driving round.. found the floodlights... driving down the road .... Leyton Orients ground..

Pulled up.. asked some fella, told him what had happened... pissed himself at the "norvern mankees".. gave us great directions to Upton Park .. managed to get there at half time..loads of Blades were outside for some reason, having a tab etc.. so went in with them so cost us nowt.

Can't remember the score but I'd guess 0-0 or 1-1

Shrewsbury away this season. Missed the first 20 mins due to roadworks. Norwich away on the opening day of the season in the 90s. Only missed the first few minutes but Deano scored just as we were going through the turnstiles.........bloody caravanners

Not purposely late but Burnley in the cup early '90's and scuppered in the famous roadworks debacle. Arrived to see Burnley score with about 15 minutes left. Saw no more goals. Final score Burnley 2 Blades 4:rolleyes:

A few years ago I turned up about 40 minutes late. The turnstiles were closed but knocked on the door and a streward let me through after u flashed my season card. He seemed a little miffed but I wasn't bothered

Last game of season 1992.Mervyn Day's only game for us away at Wimbledon (though it was played at Selhurst Park).Arrived at half time (no radio in car so no way of knowing score),we were 3.0 down so decided not to bother.... (score stayed at 3.0).We did manage a few pub stops on the way home.

Ten minutes late in two back-to-back home matches against Fleetwood and Crewe in 2015. Back when Clough was systematically destroying everything I held dear about watching United. Debates over whether to stay in the pub or go to the match. We ended up going because we already had the tickets.

Lost both games, naturally.

We went in fancy dress that day. Bermuda shorts and dodgy t shirts. Bloody freezing and dire match !!

Took a professional exam on High Street, I say professional because it mattered to our employers at the time, though there was kudos in just turning up for the exam.

Started at 6 pm and the earliest we could leave was 7 pm.

Agreed with a Blade mate, a big mate, we should hand our papers in at 7 pm, maybe 7.30 with hindsight. Either my times are wrong or the kick-off was 7.15pm ( Silent?). We ran the length of Fargate and The Moor and joined the game late v Birmingham, League Cup quarter finals maybe. We lost 3-2 , was it in extra-time?

Anyway by some fluke I passed the exam which was my worst subject and it had to be a mistake. It was a 3 hour exam!!

when I had to work saturdays till 4pm used to get down around 4 30 for the gates opening for early leavers and get in for the last 10 or 15 minutes .
got to know the gate man who let me in at 4 .20 if I got off a tad early

saw many a late goal that made it worthwhile

December 1966. The usual kick off time for evening matches these days was 7.30pm.

In the early 1960s John Harris decided that our evening games be kicked of at 6.15pm (or 6.30pm). The idea was that football fans would go straight to the Lane after work rather than go home to have tea and then switch on the TV but liked the programme they were watching making them decide not to go to the match. The experiment didnt last long as it wasnt a success

Many thanks Silent. Makes sense to me now.

You missed the highlight of the season then, the crossbar-swinging crossbar-breaking Blades and the tannoy bloke having a right old grump on; "Thank-you Sheffield United; thank-you very much."
