You did say Sky don't really care about the lower leagues... Can you tell me why they bailed out the football league all those years ago

They didn't 'bail' out the lower leagues they just saw a bargain and took advantage.

From memory the On Digital deal was for about £300m and worth £4m per championship club. Sky bought the rights in a fire sale and paid about a quarter of this.

Newscorp/Sky/Murdoch are a bunch of shysters who due to their pro-Tory editorials (Sun/Times/Fox) have been allowed to get away with distorting the media market. Football is simply a 'product' to attract and retain viewers. It was the EU that forced a degree of competition by breaking the EPL into 'packages' and this caused massive inflation in the value of the rights. The Football League is just a minor sideline and almost completely irrelevant to Sky.

INo..it isn't almost completely irrelevant to Sky...They show upwards of 150 live games involving lower league teams.. more than any other broadcaster is bothered about..

To an extent they did bail out the lower leagues.... some of those clubs, rightly or wrongly, relied on the TV money.. then ondigital went tits up...The football league panicked, went to Sky, yes they got it for a reduced rate, but for nearly 20 years they have shown lower league football..

A lot of lower league games Sky show get better viewing figures than Premiership games..

They also show darts, snooker, NFL and netball. They have 5 channels to fill so are happy to show the lower leagues but if you think for one minute that they'd miss it then you are deluded. It is all about the EPL, hence the relentless marketing hype.

The football league is a filler. Think early hours repeats of 'George and Mildred' on ITV.

Sky would not want to lose the lower league contract.. they get more viewing figures for many lower league games than Premiership games..

i must be deluded then

I think them being on a good run can be a good thing. Last thing we need is the team to relax thinking they are home and hosed just to not be able to take it back up a notch when all of a sudden we realise we're not. Complacency not Bolton or Fleetwood is our greatest danger.

You keep saying this but the 'many' games are just a few DirtyLeeds, Toon and Villa games that admittedly get more than Bournemouth or Watford at home.

They will not keep the lower league contract at any price and if push came to shove they'd let it go. Presumably they have the FL over a barrel as those idiots couldn't even be arsed to include any parent company guarantees when OnDigital went tits up. It must be like negotiating with children for Sky.

ok.. you've got me there... maybe they just can't be bothered to show one in the early rounds because they would lose hands down viewing figure wise..

You did say Sky don't really care about the lower leagues... Can you tell me why they bailed out the football league all those years ago and still do this day show live games(113 per season, all play off games and upwards of 15 checkatrade trophy matches) if they don't care about the lower leagues.
Probably because they had to, to get the PL contract (I think even Scudamore recognizes some sort of obligation to the paupers as the PL has to get their talented English youth from somewhere)

Yes I do keep saying it because it's fact..(and you didn't say anything about it in your last reply so I thought I'd bring it up... again!! 8-) ) you'd be surprised how many lower league games get more viewing figures than premier league games.

Of course they wouldn't keep it at any price ..

they didn't with the champions league..

£400million a year for that? Ouch!!

I was always an admirer of their neighbour, the one married to that stuck up git in the glasses,Yootha Joyce was a sauce pot I reckon as well

Have a 'like' for tenacity, if nothing else.

Not trying to catch you out, but do you have any viewing figures for this season? It would be minorly interesting to see how many viewers DirtyLeds/Toon etc get. In any event it will obviously be far fewer than watch the Massive.

Ha . Thanks

Leeds V Newcastle got over 825,000 viewers...

I can't give you figures for the S6 lot.. they are still being counted

If the league season lasts 36 weeks, that means they're showing about 4 lower league games per week? Really?
"Involving lower league teams".. checkatrade.. all the play off games(about 15 of them).. it's around the 150 mark over a 10 month season
