As regards the OP, I think we might be a bit biased.

So for a fairer view, have a scan at the Bob Booker biography thread which has re-surfaced near the top of the pile. I suspect our porcine neighbours don't have an equivalent of Bob and that's to their detriment.

That's a great point. However 'good' their teams have been, they've always lacked backbone.

That's the reason to support the Blades. The passion that transmits from the supporters to the players, passion that can make players from places like London fall in love with the club, time and time again. Living in west London I can still feel the links to the club, from TC to Booker, Bassett and beyond.

Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks

Now listen here, I may sound biased but to hell with it its true what can I say!

Sheffield United are the perfect example of why you're a sports/soccer fan and here's why:

We have a big, great and very loyal fan base which therefore creates one of the most electric and passionate atmospheres you're ever likely to witness at a British football match. We stay loyal and attend matches no matter what dark times we may be in, whereas Wednesday fans come out of the woodwork only for the big occasions like a Play Off Final (like last season).

We're the finest traditional English football club that remains today, with an immense soul and a distinct identity.

We have the best football stadium in terms of character and my god BDTBL (Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane) has a rich history for all sorts of reasons.

I'm sure you'll make the correct choice, and you'll be welcomed with a warm friendliness and open arms. :)

Lawrie Madden? I am absolutely not an expert so quite happy to collect my coat if required.

I felt quite happy reading this. Thanks for taking the time in looking into getting a season ticket with United. We would gladly welcome you as a Blade. Once a blade, always a blade... I'm going to New York in August, would be great if you could help me out also!

See the S6 massive had a good turn out again

Pick the cheaper one and spent the difference on beer. That way you can live the life of a real British student for a year.

Whichever you pick, you'll find yourself drawn into the local subculture of the Blades' grit and determination vs. Wednesday's abject delusion.

We're 8 points clear at the top of the table and playing the best football to watch for years. We've got a manager who's a Blade through and through, and a captain on the pitch to match him. The ground's near the city centre and the best drinking holes and we have the best anthem in football. It's a great time to be a Blade.

If we go up like we should then our next season could be a very hard fought one where we're looking just to stay at that level. We could do better than that, depending on who we pick up in the closed season, but priority number one will be survival. Wednesday, if they fail in or to make the play-offs will no doubt be setting themselves up for another promotion push. And if, and I hope they don't, they make it up this year then you're going to have the attraction of the very best teams going to play there (mixed with the very real prospect of watching them lose every week). No doubt their prices will reflect that but I don't think anyone would blame you for wanting to get a sight of Premiership football while you're here.

While I can't stand Wednesday, I love Sheffield, and being even handed both sides have a loyal fanbase that few if any other two team city can boast of. There's probably not a bad decision for an American wanting to experience English football, it's just we're clearly the better one.

Theres lots of emotional and historic reasons to pick the blades.

But the practical ones of cost and location are the reasons why you should pick them.
What he said basically. We're biased. They're biased (but from my experience, probably won't admit that)...So we're left with cost and location as arguably the only objective considerations...That said, first and foremost I hope you enjoy your Sheffield experience... And I hope you hit upon a good time to enjoy your football experience... Naturally that last sentiment only applies if you choose us!.. Have fun...UTB

If by that you mean the Sheffield Wednesday forum then yes that was my intention.

You do realise that should you enter the theatre of Iron Oxide you will be required to wear the dreaded " SHELL SUIT ".. It's mandatory in that neck of the woods.

It comes down to what sort of experience you're looking for.

Wednesday play in a stadium far too big for them with the resulting half empty ground leading to a poor atmosphere and poor matchday experience. This isn't a biased view, go on their forums and you'll see many posts complaining about the atmosphere, how quiet it is, the laughable band trying to manufacture an atmosphere and the moans at just how poor they are.

Or you could come to the Lane and experience the exact opposite to all that coupled with the central location on the edge of a major city centre with all the benefits that brings, rather than the outskirts where there is next to no opportunities to make a proper day of it.

But what should swing it is whether you want to keep the company of a set of genuinely delusional fans who believe they are on a par with Man U and Chelsea even now, or a set who are down to earth and know that despite a proud history we are what we are.

A club back on the way up with the potential to rejoin the top league and make something of ourselves when we're there.

If you ever find yourself in NY during the MLS season jump on the Red Bulls forum and they'll sort you out

Go to the big roundabout at University square.

If you: want to visit the rotting mausoleum - mix with the fans that top the table for racist arrests - support match-fixing - agree with sacking a man on Christmas Eve who actually lost a leg playing for the club - possess 3 nipples and have sex with your cousins.......follow the sign A61 Barnsley.

Or, follow the sign: Bramall Lane
The Heart of the City.

It's your choice.

i feel that i should warn you that sheffield united are more addictive than crack cocaine..

Both United and Wednesday have "supporters groups" In NYC, I know the blades lads watch games at the Smithfield in midtown.

I think you need to talk to JonnyRed(WCFC). He's a Worcester City fan who came to Bramall Lane last season for their FA Cup match, and now we can't get rid of him!!!

You should also speak to Jim Phipps on Twitter and get his opinion.

In the semi-final against Hull, which we were winning for much of the time, Hull scored a 5th goal right at the end to settle the game 5-3. Rather than sulk, all the United fans immediately stood and cheered and applauded, thanking the players for an amazing cup run. This even confused a lot of the Hull following, who assumed the goal had been disallowed. That was an extraordinary moment, and is my pitch to persuade you to try The Lane.
This was an amazing moment. Gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

The Full Monty, When Saturday Comes Abd the Dark Knight all have Blades references in them. Blink and you'll miss the last one!
Thought it was Batman Begins, not The Dark Knight?

Usually Football Factory on 33rd st. There used to be a few, but most have left now for one reason or another. The ranks are normally swelled by tourists on the rare occasions we are on the TV

Lawrie Madden? He was just a journey man who hung around in a team of thugs, moustachioed wankers and arseholes.

Coat, hat, scarf, gloves and boots needed for that one.
I got the journey man and thugs bit right :)

Only moustaches I can remember are Len De Goey, John Matthews, Bob Hatton and Tom Heffernan and I think they were the wrong era

It's up to you. But essentially this is what you are picking between.

Or this

Not to mention much cheaper tickets city centre location, loads of pubs.

This season we have been playing some great stuff and hopefully our return to the champ will see the return of frequent atmospheres like above. We've been away (from the championship) for 6 years so will be a great relief to be back and the stands will be buzzing. Especially on derby day. Apart from the old firm derby the steel city derby i would say is the fiercest in the UK.

We were talking about Madden's team, not ours.

Chief moustachioed wanker was of course Super-pig Curran. All their other shite pale into insignificance alongside that chuff.

Are you from NYC?

I met some Redskins from New York at the game in London last year and they always go to Redemption on 2nd and 53rd to watch the games when they are at home. Do you know it?

I love New York, probably been 15?times, going for my birthday (64!!!) in September. Always hire bikes, always go to the Village Vanguard, any recommendations for a Blue Collar guy and his wife!

A word of warning, Sheffield United is a virus without cure,

Once a Blade Always a Blade.

Look at Jim Phipps from your side of the pond on LinkedIn.
