Dear Sheffield Star Lazy Journalist

I admire you for coming on here Danny04 but you're dealing with some people who think The Star briefs match day photographers to only shoot images against backdrops that make the stands look empty because there is a conspiracy against Sheffield United. Totally paranoid and clueless about newsrooms but know everything.

Indeed and I am sure you have many good replies but you're the ones with the vanishing customer base and we know what happens to industries who lose their customers. Just saying

Depends what you mean by customer base. Revenues and print circulation is down but I bet the website gets as many hits in a day as papers sold in its heyday. The problem is turning those hits into revenue.

I hope most people can agree that the Star isn't a "pig paper" with an ingrained bias against the Blades. That would be commercial suicide, for starters, as it would alienate a large percentage of its readers.

OK then, paying customer database.

I am trying to tell them that they have to try a lot harder than pumping out bland non news to get people to pay for it

Empty stands? That's nothing. I'm still pissed off about buying the semi final special in 1993 and finding that there was no room in its 76 pages for a picture of Cork's goal.

To answer your points SBT
There is no editorial bias towards either club.
The sports desk sends four people each week to cover United and Wednesday, two each. Both get 3 pages of coverage.
I remember personally writing a column in The Star saying Evans should be allowed to return to football. I also covered Jim Phipps' press conference when he stated his frustrations at the 'mob' not allowing Evans to come back, or words to that effect.

All from a rudimentary Google search.
Prince Abdullah as a despot in a medieval regime? I saw this on another thread and would love to see evidence if anyone has it?
Both clubs are invaluable assets to the city, as you say. You're of course entitled to your opinion, but at least base it on facts rather than paranoia.

The Prince Abdullah thing was actually a Toby Foster BBC radio Sheffield daytime special. They've had a number of these to trash United on various issues. No mention in the local press about the mass petitions against John West Tunas animal rights violations which is interesting.Or, at the time, Hafiz Mammadov or Milan Mandaric's very interesting backgrounds.

The Star also slavishly followed the line that Club9 Sports were serious big money players when the Pigs were desperate for someone to buy them when even the most basic research showed them to be a shell that didn't exist until a week before the initial " I can smell the money" announcement and whose US address was an office you could rent by the hour, whose phone number was an automated system that couldn't put you through to anywhere and whose published email addresses weren't in service.

It's a pity they didn't trawl through Blades Mad, the more intelligent Wendies on Pork Talk and presumably on here, where they'd have realised that it was smoke, mirrors and a house built on, well nothing, yet they dropped their trousers and bent over for Fat Les, believing every "the money's on its way" claim made. Then there was the "death threats" story ......

There may well have been a few interesting threads around here at that time (appreciate, you probably weren't posting here then)... Including a few interesting "presentations" which may, or may not, have been present at the time :D

Wasn't a member then but know someone who worked at S6 at the time. To say virtually no one outside someone's inner circle believed it is no exaggeration. Joe Kosich gave me the lowdown as he felt he'd been shafted (because he thought I was actually Trevor Birch, one guess as to which Wendy Chairman told him that. Although initially I was one of the many Ben Allens who he outed regularly, based on nothing but paranoia).

Be interesting to read some of the threads on here at the time.

Just had a five minute search on the thread where the business plans were posted and then taken down.

They were genuine.

Credit to danny04 for coming on here to explain things and his reasoning behind certain stories. I think that he is in a small minoriry of reporters who can actually write a story properly. I believe that up until a couple years ago, the star were deliberately avoiding certain stories about Wednesday, mainly the desperation of trying to sell the club, its debts and it's owners dodgy background. Whereas if the same story was about blades, it would have been published without a doubt. The star are currently rather neutral and unbiased to both clubs. However, often i find that the depth of stories are rather weak, uninteresting and some are obviously lifted from forums, elsewhere in the paper, there seems to a shift in the quality of reporting. Several stories are written alike to a facebook status, littered with grammatical errors, using generic and google images, and worse of all, they are not proof read. They are actually published! This contributes massively to the papers lack of credibility, also the pop up advertising on stories are often very insensitive to the nature of the story. I wonder if those writers of stories, ever envisaged at college/uni, that they would become the laughing stock of its readers? If the star's reporters carry on writing such half arsed stories, there won't be a paper to read. Standards must be raised at the star or kiss goodbye to the local rag, and most of Sheffield would just say....not surprised. And to add, tonight in the star, the Leeds fan's blow job in dominoes pizza complete with cctv footage is an all time low, children can watch it, no warnings. That there is the best example of how it low its standards have stooped.

What would Gloops think of it all?

I note your point about old boys. We have something lined up on Keith Edwards soon, and in today's Star there's my feature with an ex-Blade who had to retire after 2x heart attacks and open heart surgery.

Tufty's rap was aimed at Parkinson who had tried to unsettle the crowd before kick off. No attempt to imply anything.
The Kyle Nix story was in the Non League Football Paper 5 months ago ............... ref my post https://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/ex-blade-kyle-nix.52797/page-2

I'm old enough to remember when the Star was a decent local paper. But I'm probably showing my age, because it isn't now, and hasn't been for a fair few years. I'm not sure why that is, but it's certainly not a patch on the newspaper it used to be.

None of the local papers are these days.
