Old Photos For No Reason Whatsoever

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Beatles played the Old Harrow on White Lane back in the day too?

Woody, you may well be right but I only remember them as being above the old Co-op on Ecclesall Road - I think the photo is 1965 or later as the MG 1100 appears to have a "C" plate

Looks like Sharrow Vale Rd, could that be Hawleys now on the left?

I used to go into the Golden Lion [when I was about the same age as the kid in that photo] to buy bags of Golden Wonder crisps when the shops were shut!

I'm pretty sure that Sharrow Vale Road did not have buildings as high as those on the right of picture, my grandad used to have a bakery across from where Hawleys is now.

However, it's a puzzle, hope someone can solve it...

You know what mate, I've been searching for a picture of my old school for ages - Carbrook Church of England - and you've gone and plonked it on here !!

I think it may have been the English Steel Company which was eventually took over by Forgemasters.

Did you go to Carbrook C of E at all or were you at Carbrook County ? Glad to know there's a fellow East Ender on here.

All my family was of the Cliffe most of them lived on Alfred Rd from the early 1900s to the 60s/70s then gradually got dispersed all over Sheffield.
I left when I was 2 we moved to a new massonette on the Lindsay estate but I was round at my grandmas at least twice a week for years me mam couldn't get her head round leaving.
My grandma had a chip shop on Newhall Rd in the 50s noted for its pie and peas
but my grandad gambled all the profits on the dogs!

When you said where you lived I guessed you'd be either Carbrook CofE or the County. As a Beaver Hill pupil we had quite a few living down that way (mainly Darnall, but some from Attercliffe) so I used to be down that way sometimes, and my uncle worked at Brown Bayleys so I used to meet him and talk all things Blades. Happy memories!

An artist called Stephen Fothergill does paintings of Sheffield in the 50s, as it happens he did Newhall Road.

I worked near there in the late 70s and 80s. Not far from a pub called The Forge. All the housing and old businesses (and eventually the pub) were bulldozed. Such is progress!!

No, they never played there. The Azena gig was moved from the Stringfellows' Black Cat Club because of the demand for tickets and the need for a bigger venue. My wife went to see them at the Azena. I had a ticket but I had scarlet fever and wasn't able to go!

Played darts there late 70's in the old Sheffield works league and yes, they only had a beer licence. There were hundreds of little boozers tucked away down the back streets in days gone by, great meeting places and it's sad to think how many are gone now.

The Azena was where the Co-op is on White Lane. Apparantly the old lighting system and ceiling are still intact in the old part of the building at the back ( obviously not for public access)
