Well I'm reading the hype of the carruthers thread and thinking, hang on a minute, although I agree wholeheartedly, I'm not reading anything about Hanson, and for me he had a great first game for us, he won plenty, he moved about, he caused problems and just to put the cherry on, he scored!
I think, abit more confidence and getting to know the lads and this could be another brilliant signing for us, he worked well with both sharp and Lavery, and these two partnerships are what are going to get us out of this league I believe, i think we can assume, barring any injuries etc that Done, Mcnulty and Clarke have pretty much had their arses handed to them.
 



Agree. Thought he put himself about a lot. Got stuck into our high press and won more than his fair share in the air. He held the ball up well at times as well.

I hope we don't get into the habit of using the long ball all the time if things aren't going our way from midfield
 
He is what he is!

Puts himself about, full of running, formidable in the air. Some of his headers were very impressive - running at full pelt in one direction and managing to flick it back the opposite.

I suspect in the Champ he'll be OK as an impact sub to win headers. He's that good in the air and when taking the ball on his chest.

Seems to be a lot of praise for him, but I think he was just OK, and not much more. I think there's more to come.

I was disappointed that we didn't get more crosses in towards him. Got to get in the habit of looping them up towards the back post a bit more to give him time to adjust and attack it.

Also heard talk about him being a good partner for Sharp but I don't agree, there wasn't much link up between them today and and Sharp typically isn't best suited alongside a target man. We could've done with more mobility up front for much of the game. At times Duffy would be running forward with the ball but there wouldn't be anyone he could give the ball to 30 yards from goal and expect something to happen.

We didn't take the easy option of hitting it long to him very often which is good, but when we did I don't think we maximised his flick ons, and with Sharp in this formation I don't think we will.

While he won most things in the air, he wasn't as dominant as I expected but in Robinson and Charles he was up against one of the league's toughest centre half pairings to win headers against.

Good to see him score on his debut, and it was a great team goal too.

Very good assessment Ricky.

Pretty much as I saw it.

Hopefully there is some improvement to come as he gets used to his new set up.

I thought he did fine on his debut, I noticed he was quite vocal on the pitch too, which is good. My only frustration was, we have been crossing the ball in high the last few games, but today, we kept crossing in across the floor! When now , we have something to aim for, freeman kept putting it across the floor. with Done playing and sharp , yes that's want we needed more of. We didn't look for him enough in our crossing into the box. But I'm sure they will address that, the more he plays.
 
I think he could work better with Lavery up top but there's absolutely no chance you'd drop the L1's top scorer.

Hanson isn't this great player and he clearly has limitations.

I thought Hanson had a very "solid" debut.
He is exactly what we needed and his inclusion DID give us a new dimension.
We still played plenty of good patient passing but every now and then kicked it long.
And to be fair the "kicking it long" choice did create danger.
Hanson won most of his headers and flickons and it was good to see.

Although I disagree regards the Sharp/ Hanson partnership.
They seemed to be under instructions to stay close together.

It's ironic that as Clarke clearly has move talent than Hanson
Clarke (because of his talent) was often trying to score himself from difficult angles etc
Or Clarke would try the difficult/ ambitious pass.

However Hanson is more limited so he kept it really simple.
Held it up well and played the simple pass to feet.
Also I don't think Hanson is that prolific so often he was looking to set up Sharp.
Sharp seemed much much happier with Hanson in the team.

So in conclusion Hanson as an individual striker isn't the greatest signing we've made
BUT Wilder and Knill must be really happy because Hansons inclusion definitely gives the oppostion defence something to worry about and it did give us a new dimension.
 
For his goal, his movement was perfect. He checked and came to the penalty spot as he saw Freeman get to the by-line. That face him the room to slot.

With other forwards they've tended to stay in the 6 yard box so they are crowded out and the chance goes begging. Hanson showed his experience - just like Wright does at the back. Read it perfectly and made a difference.
 
He did play well yesterday, but I was more interested to see his impact on how the team plays rather than how he plays. We did go slightly longer at times, and in the first half our passing wasn't very fluid, which you might attribute partly to less movement up front. Also the lack of pace in our team is worsened by his presence.

But on the plus side, he often occupied two defenders, leaving more space for those joining. When we get a set piece, you see him, EEL and JOC, and rub your hands at the prospect. And just a minor thing, but we will create chances from Moore's kicking now too.

So if we use him correctly and pick the right players around him, he's a brilliant option. My only concern is that Sharp isn't the ideal partner for him, but obviously Sharp is the first striker on the team sheet.

I think that's where we miss Che Adams, to be honest and have never really replaced him, as much as he had his detractors.

I think the problem is we have a system that we like to play, and Billy automatically commanding a starting place, understandably. We've then picked a couple of the better rival strikers from the Division (Clarke and Hanson) but neither either suit the system or playing alongside Sharp. It's encouraging but still a bit of square pegs in round holes.

This had the effect of pulling their two CBs forward leaving space in behind. as soon as it went out wide he would turn and get into the 6 yard box giving us two players at least for the cross instead of just Billy. He took the pressure off Billy which meant he didn't have to do much physical work. Some of his knock downs were great our payers just were not use to where he was putting it That will come with games. He wasn't a big lump with flailing arms giving away free kicks all afternoon. He didn't get caught offside at all.We didn't play it long anymore than we have been doing He scored Good debut for me
 
I can't remember the last time we had so many options up top to choose from.

I do wonder if taking sharp off as messaage to the squad to say even the captain can be touch, especially after everyone has a roasting bar sharp after the Wimbledon game. Billy should have had a hatrick yesterday

It took a while for the players to stop taking the easy option of trying to hit Hanson as an out ball but soon had the ironed out. It is the worry that when you have a big guy you hit him early instead of doing what got you to be top dog in the first place

I think he got a knock. He limped a bit and rubbed his leg just before he was subbed.

FOOTBALL , When alls said and done is a simple game
and some of its greatest exponents do the simple things without thinking
Kevin Keegan always knew his limitations and focused on his strengths , movement simple short passes making himself available
and as such became a legend
Hanson does what it says on the tin
Wins headers , lays it off or holds it up , plays it simple
no twinkle toed stuff , but does what hes there for to the best of his ability, and scores bread and butter goals
rather have a team built of those type of players than artistic footballers any day of the week who over complicate the game at times

i was watching this carefully.. at first billy didn't bother anticipating the flick ons..not surprising really! but as the game wore on he was starting to make runs in anticipation of Hanson winning it

They arent done at Bramall Lane and nor should they be but its clear they are going to need to take it up a notch if theyre to get in the team. Messrs Coutts and Freeman have set the example.

I see Scougs as more of a midfield player, but same difference and I get your point, rather have him on the bench than those 3 though!!
 



I've rated Hanson since seeing him play for Bradford a few years back. He doesn't get the credit he deserves in that people see him, see his size and dismiss him as a big static lump but he has so much more than that to offer.

He harrasses the defenders all over the pitch from the first minute until the last & he actually has a decent touch on him and links up with those around him fairly well. Even when he doesn't win headers he is there challenging and he doesn't give the opposition a minutes breather. Sharp will (as will Lavery i feel) love playing alongside him for the remainder of this season and beyond.
