Isn't making up losses on a football club you own a bit like someone paying their mortgage? It's a necessary consequence of owning the asset, isn't it?

No. The losses are as a result of trading, not paying for an asset, interest apart.

No.

A house appreciates in value and you can sell it any time to clear the mortgage. During the period you pay the mortgage, you live in the house for free, thus avoiding paying rent. Funding a football club's loss is a one way street. The only benefit is you get, is a padded seat in a marked area where the nearby punters can easily recognise you to boo and abuse.

I'm sure there have been plenty of times KM would have gladly offloaded SUFC but he would only have got a few million back. His only chance of getting back all he has put in, is promotion to the EPL (before the TV bubble bursts).

Houses do not always appreciate in value.

I'm not sure there's that much difference. It's debt servicing.

He'll be lucky to get that even if we did back to back promotions.

If I could afford a club I could go and buy Sunderland or Hull. I could have bought Villa last season. There seems to be a shortage of billionaires wanting to buy PL clubs at vastly overinflated prices.

Yes but BL is worth £60,£90 million depending if the flats there haven't increased from a couple of hundred grant apiece.

Okay smart arse, not every single one does but over any sensible period 99% of houses will apreciate in value.

Debt servicing means paying interest, as with a mortgage. It makes it sound like you almost know what you are talking about.

KM doesn't service debt at BDTBL, he makes good the trading loss year after year, which is an entirely different thing.

Whatever he 'squadered' on Fathi and the others pales into insignificance compared to what Robson spent the year after. Any sensible owner would have spent the money on trying to stay in the PL, not trying to get back into it.
If his beef with Warnock was that big he should have sacked him when we got promoted. His halfway house of keeping him but not renewing his contract or giving sufficient funds to sign good enough players served nobody.

It was a poor decision and I don't see how anyone can say otherwise.

Had a chuckle at this old article on Warnock trying to improve the squad in the 2006 January transfer window...(not much has changed!)

'but the United manager also needs to reduce the wage bill at Bramall Lane'

'Warnock admits that United are unable to compete with many of the Premiership clubs in terms of salaries but he has already held talks with the chairman, Kevin McCabe, about revising the budget in the future.'

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2006/dec/22/newsstory.sheffieldunited

Warnock would probably have kept us up if McCabe had paid the going rate re: wages in the Prem.

May I suggest you imagine Kelly Brook doing the spanking in the attire you describe ........ it works well for me so I can recommend it if you have a good imagination .... ;):p:D

UTB & FTP

Imagine it's Kelly Brook, but in reality it's Bella Emberg (for all you older TV viewing Blades out there......)

I was suggesting that and I stand corrected. You are not a citizen of La la Land and I humbly beg forgiveness.

In my defence I've spent years trying to explain to people Mr McCawber's basic laws. When Expenditure exceeds Income, someone has to make good the loss. We have been lucky to have McCabe to do this, despite what some may think.

In my haste to remind the good burghers of S2 of basic economics I misread your intent. For this I should be eternally spanked,

Forgiveness is granted. I won't be adorning the leather and thigh highs though.....

In a broader sense it's a payment to keep hold of your own asset. No need for snark.

It's still not quite the same.

You can easily sell the house, clear the mortgage and use the equity. There is a readily accessible market in second hand properties.

KM has to keep making good the losses to keep the club solvent and his debt with it. There is no ready market for crap football clubs unless it seems, you can con some Thai fisherman that you are 'massive'.

Many of you will remember that before Robson came in, Kenny Dalglish had called McCabe (as they know each other) and offered to come in for one season, to steady the ship and sort things out, I often wondered what our fortunes would have looked like if that had happened.

We'd have re-signed Ian Rush.

Cue Kenny's first interview:

"I know Ian is 49 now and his nose is even bigger than it was when you had him in 1998, but I'm convinced he can still do a job for us...."

So just how do you 'reduce the wage bill' by spending 'probably' around £7 million on players, well, of course, that figure has to include all player contracts and wages also...the devil's in the detail I guess.

Here's a little more explanation on McCabe's process...loan note allocation's to raise the cash and all...wonder what the other £5 million they raised went on?

"But Warnock has been warned by plc chairman Kevin McCabe he will have to use the cash to help fund players' wages.

United are to raise £10million via a loan note allocation scheme to be approved by shareholders towards the end of the month.

Warnock is to be given half of the funds, plus he has a further £2million remaining from the summer transfer kitty.

McCabe confirmed: "If we're adding the £5million from the loan note allocation, plus the budget left over from the beginning of the season, he probably has something like £7million.

"It's a lot of money, although that's an allocation of money that is also for player contracts.

"My feeling is the squad we have now is good enough to keep us up, but I appreciate every team needs freshening up at some stage.

"We did that last season when we brought in four or five players in January.

"You can look back and say Neil didn't need some of them, but we were promoted, so it worked.

"This time around we maybe need to freshen things up a little, but don't ask me with who because I haven't a clue.

"When you look at who we can recruit, the list is pretty small if the criteria is that we need players who are better than those we have. It's not easy."

People can make their own minds up with the facts I guess...McCabe felt the squad was 'good enough to stay up'...say's it all really...well, that and the 'don't ask me, I haven't got a clue' bit...

FORUM TRANSLATION = McCabes a cunt :D

I think the fact that Warnock was going into our most important game for twenty years with his contract about to expire shows a terrible lack of judgement from KM. His reaction to Warnock talking to Mandy about the Pompey job was that of an over-emotional fan rather than a clear headed profession and not awarding him a new contract when we went up was small minded.

For all his faults, Warnock is a decent manager and it's taken KM ten years to find one as good, costing him a fortune in the process. McCabe cut his nose off to spite his face over Warnock.
If Warnock was that good a manager, his contract situation would (should) have been totally irrelevant to ANYTHING prior to the clubs most important game in 20 years.
I've always liked Warnock but to suggest that this is a McCabe cock-up is going a bit far!

I didn't say the result of the game was directly due to Warnock's contract running out. I was using letting his contract expire as an example of KM's poor judgement.

Second lowest wage bill in Prem that season...take note of 2005-6 Championship winners Reading's figures, who managed to finish 8th in their first Prem season and also Watford's who finished bottom.

outside the 20000 x 300 quid a year on average 6 m quid for tickets , I did post this earlier

thats the same at every club , people buy tickets
but if you have a wage bill over that

we cant get it off the 20 note trees in the orchard

You seem to have changed the subject a bit. I was merely pointing out that ‘sole source of income’ was a very silly comment. I’ve shown you why it was silly by pointing out many other forms of income that we have received during the period to which you refer. Not least during the last 3-4 years when the prince has been on board assisting with the bills.

You could just acknowledge that it was a very silly comment on your part…..

I was merely pointing out that ‘sole source of income’ .
well obviously theres gate receipts , all clubs have gate receipts
, thats a given

tell me how much of pogbas 95 million fee came out of mufcs gate receipts
source of income other , than the bleeding obvious, that all 92 have

outside of that the bulk of the income comes from the board at any club

bit of diifference between buying 1 x 350 quid season ticket
and covering the 6 million pound wages short fall

when you think 6 m from all our fans st ,s

mcc 6m to cover shortfall

mccabes matching what all our fans put in, and thats each season on normal running
not adding paying for ground improvements pitches etc

so working it backwards he puts in 20000 times each season what 1 season ticket holder does

So, the top four spenders finished in the top four and three of the bottom six spenders got relegated. It's almost as if there's a correlation between the wage bill and the league position.
Apart from West Ham who had to cheat. Does their wage bill include all the back handers they had to pay to avoid the points deduction?

makes you wonder how bolton on 15000 gates managed a 30 million wage bill
we tonked west ham 3-0 with half the wage bill of theirs

They ran up a debt with their previous owner of something like £180m which he ended up having to write off to sell the club. Football can be an expensive hobby.
