It would have been lovely if we could have somehow held on to that old pavilion when the ground was redeveloped. I remember walking past it when I went to my friend's house on Cherry St.
We had a ridiculous attitude towards buildings and architecture in the 60s and 70s. We just twatted decent buildings downs because we thought they were old fashioned and we wanted to be 'modern'. Now we realise those horrible concrete cubes look shite and it's too late.

The pavilion would be a brilliant club shop, bar etc that would be rammed every game. From what I've seen of photos during construction, we could have kept it but knocked it down for a fucking car park.

Way before my time, but how did the idea of cricket leaving BL come about? I'm guessing there was quite a bit of upset about it.

In the words of Joni Mitchell, "You don't know what you've got til it's gone,
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
..."

There was a discussion about this photo in SUFC Images on FB. I believe that the fans who chaired Sabella don't go to the Lane anymore

The bigger lad went to play football in Florida and is still there, if I've got it right. The little lad at the front is on the Brighton picture from 7 years later!

Here's someone I've not been aware of but holds a number of records: Billy Mosforth

2ljtdp0.jpg

First player to play for both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United.
First player to score for both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United.
Scored the first goal at Sheffield United's ground Bramall Lane.
First Sheffield United player to be 'substituted'.
Record England Cap holder at the time.
Played in the first professional game to be played under floodlights.

Wonder what his celebration was like as the first player to score at the Lane ?

And we've stood on those same terraces and complained about the crap we were about to endure. This photo puts things into perspective. They'd no idea what to expect.

I look at that photo and just think how many stood on those terraces never returned.

IF and its a big 'IF', that really is a United shirt..... then doesn't it give the lie to the idea that we played in plain white shirts or pinstriped shirts in our first seasons. He only played for United in 1889/90.

That could be a Hallam shirt or even a Wednesday one???? after all its just the crest of the city..... but it makes you think - possible the much loved "Nottingham Forest Away" kit of last season was even wronger than we knew.............

Yorkshire CCC were livid. For years the Lane had been the headquarters of the county, Leeds and Headingley being adopted much later. It is said that Lord Hawke himself said that if YCCC ever left Bramall Lane what remained would be cursed. We have done well since 1973 haven't we?

Always good. Last saw him some years ago, vocally excellent but he spent about twenty minutes ranting about his brother David - a true musical legend IMO - had been screwed over by Motown etc but oddly never mentioned his huge drug issues nor him knocking the shit out of Tammi Terrell on a daily basis.

Same bill saw George Macrae, who was excellent.

Had tickets to see the Chi Lites at the Fiesta on a complete one off, Sunday night. Pricey as well. Got in, been cancelled, Brotherhood of Man were on instead, ffs.
Sorry but that is funny

His wiki says it is him in his Sheffield United shirt and it is a Sheffield "Blades" badge I think.

United's wiki says we played in narrow red and white stripes in 1890/91 before reverting back to white shirts the following season, so it could be consistent with the photo. Stripes returned in 1892/93 and we switched from blue shorts to black in 1904. I think we did originally start with white shirts and blue shorts though.

I agree, the different sources contradict don't they? This is photo is labelled Sheffield United 1890/91

its the thin stripes (but much broader than adidas® came up with last year) ...... is this bloke Billy Mosforth?

anyway, the badge is identical to the one that Billy is wearing in the photo that Unitedblade posted so yes, its fair to say its a United Shirt.

but if Billy was at United in 1889/90 our first season of existence (as it says on wiki) and that photo was taken when he was at the club (why would it be at any other time?) then historic kits gets our first kits wrong doesn't it?

There is an early team photo that makes it look as if its an all-white kit but I don't think its conclusive, it looks to me as if the contrast has made the white drown out any red stripes that were on the kit. Oh and the badge was wrong on the 126th anniversary shirt too ;)

I hate to even write these words but weren't Wednesday once known as the Blades?
Apparently all sporting teams from Sheffield were called Blades in the early days. They changed to Fowls in 1912. I don't think they have ever had the Sheffield badge on their shirts. Not surprising as they are based in South Barnsley.

Guess the match and the season

Guess at 61/62 and it looks like Gerry Summers. I'll have to think about the opposition.

Arsenal or Man U ?

Looks more like Kelsey than Gaskell so Arsenal ?
