hate arguing with fellow Blades over this, but why on earth would a Sheffield based newspaper give any space to a letter from a Coventry fan? Surely the job of The Star is to support Blades, Eagles, Sharks, etc., plus the unclean, because the readers are from Sheffield, not bleeding Coventry

I'd have thought their job was to report news relevant to those clubs rather than "support" them. They obviously deemed Coventry reaction to our fans actions newsworthy.

Exactly. I didn't see owt wrong with publishing that letter, as long as they allowed Blades fans the right of reply

I don't understand why everyone's hating on Shield and The Star in general. In my view both do a decent job with extremely limited resources. JS has stuck it out for a long time now, and I doubt he gets paid more than half the posters on here

We should be glad that a struggling local paper still dedicates a journo to United full time. Wonder if Wednesday fans feel the same about whoever covers them?

Aw poor local journalists who don't know St Mirren is in Scotland. Maybe if we buy more papers then they might be able to send them back to school.

You obviously missed this barely related Blades story they ran with then.

I'm sure they do know St Mirren is a Scottish club. Problem is the copy editing is most likely done by someone on work experience who doesn't.

It's not restricted to the Star, there are more errors in the nationals these days. More and more papers can't afford to employ decent copy editors so they rely on computer programs and kids on work experience.

Well when they produce articles like they have been lately then maybe they should close down and consider another kind of business.

You don't have to buy it or read the online edition, but I think it's good that Sheffield has a local newspaper. Some similar-sized cities don't even have one these days. Call me old fashioned but sometimes it's good to turn off the computer and read a paper.

Still miss the Green Un though. Anyone remember waiting in the paper shop on a Saturday for the Green Un to arrive?

Fuck me, am I the only one who thinks that, for all its faults, its good that Sheffield has a local paper?

And what's wrong with vaping anyway?

Its a travesty that the Green'Un doesnt exists anymore.

Dad used to send me off to the shop to stand and wait for it on a Saturday night, what a Sheffield ritual that was.

It was brilliant for the match report, other results, fanzine article and especially the local amateur leagues.

Massive shame its been axed.

The letters page was good too. Both the Blades and the pigs had a two-page match report, plus at least one page for other news. I agree the local leagues coverage was fantastic.

Well said Dkc. James Shield and The Star deserve better than much of the ill informed nonsense written here by people who understand nothing about journalism.

Yes we must be ill informed. I mean some of us USED to buy it and read it. We are their audience and we are only pointing what's wrong with it.

It's not just sport either The Stars reporting of a lot of issues in Sheffield have been pretty poor.

I think there's far too much criticism aimed directly at James Shield.

From my perspective he's always engaged when/where relevant with fans on social media, and he his, like us, a victim of The Stars plight. He'll also have his hands tied by 'politics' to what he can and cant report.

The criticism has mostly been aimed at The Star anyway. There are still excuses being made for it, so it will bobble along for a few more years at least.

And so it should.

The Stars running pretty much mirrors the councils. Poor decisions, behind the times, could achieve so much more - a let down.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, O Great One!

We, the great unwashed on here, should really know our place and not venture to express opionions on things that don't concern us. After all we are only customers of the Star, the really important people are the journalists.

Thanks for sorting out our confusion and sorry you had to waste two lines on us when you must have so many more inportant things to do.

I'd slag the Star off all day long, because I think it badly lets the City down (or half of it haha!).

However, James Shield to my knowledge has never bad mouthed SUFC, written slanderous stories about us etc, never been rude on social media. He's just the SUFC fall guy for the Stars inability to run a decent paper. Think Shield deserves the respect you'd give anyone.

You don't 'deserve' respect, you earn it.

He hasn't.

It's very true that I know little about journalism. However, I know I'd rather have a wank with a glove laced with ghost-pepper sauce than read about Jenny and the case of next doors overhanging trees.

Complete with text book picture of Jenny looking sad/angry of course.

Spooky faces in Ben’s kneecaps

John Martin with son Ben Martin reading up on images in knees at their home in Denaby.

TWO ghostly faces formed in a Doncaster man’s knees have become a family joke.

Dad John Martin first spotted the two ‘faces’ apparently staring out of his 20-year-old son Ben’s kneecaps as they both sat watching the television at the family home at Catterick Close, Denaby.

Ben Martins knees .... has face like images in his knees .
He says his first reaction to the discovery, after noticing it for the first time, was to howl with laughter.

Wife Joanne and younger children Kristian, aged 12, and Harrison, 10, then also took a peek - and agreed they too could see the faces.

The believe the dimples on Ben’s knees look like an old fashioned picture of a bearded Chinese man.

John said: “As a family, we’re big fans of the weird and wonderful, and we’ve enjoyed Robert Ripley’s Believe It or Not Stories for years.

“I never dreamed one of us would turn up with faces on our body parts - but you can’t deny Ben’s dimples do look like faces.

“We’re a very close family but I have to say there’s been nothing I would call strange in the past.”

Ben, who works at a juice bar in Doncaster, says he can see the funny side - and has even decided to give names to the faces on his knees.

The image on the right knee now goes by the name of Casper, while his left knee has been dubbed Fu Manchu.

He believes his keep fit activities may have brought the images out.

He said: “I’ve always noticed I had odd knees, but I have been weight training for a year. It may be that, with body definition, the faces become more prominent.

“Maybe I’m ready to join the ranks of the Caterpillar Man, or the completely hairy family from the Ripley book!”

Mate, if someone trashed your profession with daft comments you might want to defend it. I have never met James Shield but some of the comments about him are ridiculous.

Buddy, you know this is a football forum right? A place where we literally spend hours trashing people's skill in their chosen profession. Do you see any of those on here bleating about how unfair it is?

Man-up buttercup because life gets a shitload harder than this.

I think you'll find the original bleating was from people complaining about The Star and James Shield!
