You forgot Gladys Knight. The Motown nights were superb. Never had chance to see the Motown artists before The Fiesta, except Stevie Wonder at the Mojo.

I was working as a van driver at the time. Did my deliveries round Cheshire and Manchester, finished work and shot over to Newark to pick up my then girlfriend, back to The Fiesta to see The Beach Boys, back to Newark, a couple of hours "sleep", back to Sheffield to load up and off to Cheshire and Manchester again. That Ford Anglia van needed servicing soon after.

Missed Gladys Knight. Would love see her even now. Best female motown vocalist by far. Would be best motown female ever if not for the Goddess that is Tammi Terrell.

Saw the Four Tops at the Fiesta. Has there ever been a better male voice than Levi Stubbs?

I think there have been many as good, but as a group of four singers they will never be bettered. Without using Google, I think they started out in the mid 50s. Never changed line up. Until forced by death.

I think you're probably right. Big music shop full of pianos, keyboards and other instruments.

He is. Definitely top of Fargate. HL Brown moved across the Road when Wilson Peck moved to Rockingham Gate. It was the Fiesta ticket office with the posters.

I've got the same publication Bert...50 seasons in the top flight was most of our history, and we were back again 3 years later...sharp contrast to the last 40 years I suppose.
View attachment 21300

In the back of it they interview a couple of elderly fans, the old guy names the best player he's ever seen playing for us. Nudger Needham no less. It still amazes Bert to know that when he first stated going to The Lane there were fans there whose hero was Nudger.

You can see one of the old "sewer gas destructor lamps" in that picture. They were used to burn off excess sewer gas, which was explosive. There's still a few left standing in Sheffield, like the one on Alderson Rd at the junction with London Rd near BDTBL (one of the ladder rest arms has broken off this one)...

Well spotted, Highfield. There's still one of these at the roundabout at the top of Cemetery Road/Psalter Lane (at the top of Frog Walk). I used to sell street furniture so I retain an interest in these things (I was also, briefly, a member of The Letterbox Study Group, but Operation Yewtree put a stop to all that...) Anyway, back to The Brickmakers Arms and you'll see some lettering on the 'lantern' of the lighting column, which gives a clue as to where this pub was located... (the road sign is also on the pub wall, but not as visible).

Why wasn't Bill Punton in the photo? There is another 1967/68 squad photo and Punton wasn't in it too
Thought TC would have been on there aswell..I think Punton would have gone by then..Willie Carlin,Paddy Buckley and Colin Addison are in the insets at the top of the picture.

TC joined us in 1/2/68.We signed Buckley in January so it looks like the Souvenir book was published towards the end of January. Carlin signed for us in Sept, Addison signed for us in November and we tried to sign Stewart Scullion too but he rejected the move.

Photography wasn't quite advanced in those days. On sunny days there would be a 'glare back' from bald heads. Bill was asked to 'sit this one out'.
Keith Kettleborough missing from a number of early 1960's photos.

One of the best live gigs I have been to, effortless stuff and hit after hit. They came on to this song (below), all four stood in a line, fingers clicking. When they hit the second verse, Levi took the mic out of the mic stand and started walking towards the edge of the stage and sang "some say it's a sign of weakness.....", that voice, the crowd went wild, great stuff

They were a great talent alright. The whole Motown sound. Big brass section, big string section and a single piano going through the chords.

Ask twenty people for their favorite Four Tops track and you could get twenty different replies, none of which you could argue against.
