That's pretty decent. I'd love to have seen Ella Fitzgerald and I used to like the Grumbleweeds radio show. And the Bee Gees! I guess that was pre Night Fever (77?) so not so good.

They had some big hits in the late 60's, only one or two in the early 70's, then suddenly appeared in 1975 with Jive Talkin' and the rest is history!

Yeah, Massachusetts and that. I wouldn't have paid to see them doing that stuff.

I saw the Detroit Emeralds the year in Doncaster the year before I think. They were pretty good.

Not a band I'm familiar with tbh. I'll have a look on YouTube.

Two biggest hits here "Feel The Need In Me" and " You want it you got it" although"Do Me Right" got club plays. "Holding On" from late sixties probably their best though.

Group split and the hive off became the Floaters, of "Float on" fame.

'I'm Larry...'

Saw Limmie and Family Cooking at Baileys on Bank Street. Could have been called Cairo Jax by then.

There was a discussion about this photo in SUFC Images on FB. I believe that the fans who chaired Sabella don't go to the Lane anymore

Bit mysterious SB? Any reason we should know or just natural causes?

They used to have some decent Black American acts on there. Remember Johnny Johnson and His Bandwagon being exceptionally good although a good few years after their big hits.

Jimmy Ruffin was quality.

Always good. Last saw him some years ago, vocally excellent but he spent about twenty minutes ranting about his brother David - a true musical legend IMO - had been screwed over by Motown etc but oddly never mentioned his huge drug issues nor him knocking the shit out of Tammi Terrell on a daily basis.

Same bill saw George Macrae, who was excellent.

Had tickets to see the Chi Lites at the Fiesta on a complete one off, Sunday night. Pricey as well. Got in, been cancelled, Brotherhood of Man were on instead, ffs.

It was the now defunct Outlook club.

That rings a bell! Although I can't remember much about the place, only time I went.

Once went to see the Isley Brothers in Hull. Four white blokes came on......

My mate swears he went to see Carla Thomas somewhere and spoke to her on a train after and it seemed she was born and raised in Manchester and had never seen Stax Studios :)

One of the members of the Fantastics/Velours who doubled as the Tempatiobs - The Tempting Temptations I think, Itsinyerblood will probably know more - has lived in Sheffield for many years.

The women loved Ruffin

So that's where Roddy Doyle got his idea for the Commitments - just substituted Wilson Pickett for Carla Thomas :)

And a pretty good pub rock and then punk venue too. Saw a lot of great bands there; Talking Heads supported The Ramones, The Jam played at my 21st birthday bash (they didn't know it was my 21st obv). Eeee them were t'days.

Saw JJ and Bandwagon there too, really good. All the big Motown/ soul bands played Fiesta like you said Sean.
Saw them all, 4 Tops, Temptations, Edwin Starr, Ruffin (saw him at Cavendish too where a big fat lass couldn't contain herself and jumped on stage and flattened him with her lustrous embrace!). The best I saw were Chairman of the Board supported by The Fantastics, both were top drawer that night. Happy Days!

Cant remember his name. SUFC images group is no longer on FB. Can you see Ian in the photo?

Difficult because he is a couple of years younger than me, but although from Holloway came up as a youngster and was a Blade, but relapsed and for the last 30 years at least traveled all over with QPR. Knew him from around 1986 when he was Blade/Hoops and he has always had long hair. In 1978 he would have been around 22 which might put him older than the lads in the photo. Just a random thought with you mentioning QPR.

You forgot Gladys Knight. The Motown nights were superb. Never had chance to see the Motown artists before The Fiesta, except Stevie Wonder at the Mojo.

I was working as a van driver at the time. Did my deliveries round Cheshire and Manchester, finished work and shot over to Newark to pick up my then girlfriend, back to The Fiesta to see The Beach Boys, back to Newark, a couple of hours "sleep", back to Sheffield to load up and off to Cheshire and Manchester again. That Ford Anglia van needed servicing soon after.
