Problem is.... Should we subsequently get promoted, what will it cost us to get a striker of his calibre in?

There is never any guarantee in the PL. Whose to say Beattie will experience any good times or more than 8 goals in the PL with us? After all his best season with Everton was 12 league goals I think? With quite a decent Everton side.

There is never any guarentee in any league. My point is that, we've got a 20goal+ striker at the present time, who is in form and fits in well with our team. It's more likely that he'll continue to score than it is someone like Earnshaw would pick up the form.

Whilst £8million would be a nice amount, if we are seriously going to mount a challenge to become a stable Premier League side, we are going to need someone who is doing what he currently is. To replace what he currently offers, we'll either have to be very lucky or pay more imo.

Earnshaw is just an example, we could easily pick up other strikers.

We have a few problems with James Beattie,

1) If an £8 million offer comes in, it is a lot to refuse.
2) He is reportedly on wages make it that bit harder to splash out on others.
3) IF we do get to where we wish to be next season, we will then have a striker who is 31 (and a half) which for what Beattie brings to the squad, will be harder when another year and a half is on him, against better defences etc.

I'd love to keep Beattie, I'm just saying, realisticly if an offer of over £5 million comes in, we shouldn't just disregard it onn a wim. It's an offer we should seriously be looking at.

I don't buy that anyone will be offering £8 million, but if they were, it would be a no-brainer.

Why not? Paul Jewell has publicly stated the parachute money has already been spent, so money may well be low.

Earnshaw has also proved himself in the PL with WBA, but sadly since that season was never given any real consistent play time. Also not sure if you've noticed, we are in the Championship and this is the league we're aiming to get out of.

But Earnshaw was just one player out of many.

Id rather us go for someone else really.

Also I wouldnt be that worried we if lost Beattie and didnt replace him. Hulse is good enough and with the right service he will start scoring again. At the moment he has Sharp Syndrome and I reckon once he gets a goal more will follow. He probably wont be as prolific as Beattie but could still get 15 goals or more in this league if he plays regularly.

Hulse is good enough

My problem with Hulse is that he has had one good performance out of about 22 appearances now. He did well last season, but not as good as some people will have you believe.

How long do we keep playing him for before he should be realising his potential?

One of Beattie or Hulse should be going, dependant on figures being paid.

I think its a case of Sharp Syndrome.

Once he gets his 1st goal more will follow.

We waited long enough for Sharp to bloody score though. lol

I think its a case of Sharp Syndrome.

Least Sharp was putting loads of effort in and trying hard. Sometimes Hulse just doesn't look interested.

Would be nice for him to start scoring, but in order of strikers Hulse doesn't even come 4th for me.

But which could we rely on to benefit us in the way James Beattie does?

Totally agree, but its not a no-brainer and we shouldn't snap their hands off IMO. We've obviously got to very seriously consider it, but my worry is we'd be losing out on a player that we've been very lucky to get onboard, with only substandard options as replacements.

2) He is reportedly on wages make it that bit harder to splash out on others.

There are many rumours on his wages, the nearest i've got to knowing from a totally reliable source is "he's not on anywhere near as much as most people would have you believe".

3) IF we do get to where we wish to be next season, we will then have a striker who is 31 (and a half) which for what Beattie brings to the squad, will be harder when another year and a half is on him, against better defences etc.

He's never really relied on pace, so its hard to imagine why he'll be majorly effected by another year?

I'm not disputing we were lucky to get him, nor am I disputing we would miss him. I just think it won't be the be all and end all if we did lose him. £8 million wouldn't just go towards replacing him as a striker but in many other areas of the pitch which do need strengthening more than up front IMO.

I'm not really refering to pace, however he could lose a yard of pace. I'm talking more about his full fitness side of it, if people think he is lazy now, when he loses a bit of fitness they may well have a field day. He is clever in how he preserves his energy, and this may well lead to him not winning as many headers, not helping out as much up front/midfield like he currently does.

Anyways, we won't be offered anywhere near £8 million, so suppose this is a pointless arguement. As he will be here next season.

Whilst I agree that we do need to strengthen all over, we've seen this season how a collection of lesser players playing as a commited team and to their strengths can be successful in this league. Strikers are generally the most expensive position to purchase... Personally i'd value keeping Beattie over spending money on "good" championship players, which is all we'd be able to get.

Just looked on the all knowing (but possibly inaccurate) site that is Wikipedia.
And Beattie's goal against Burnley was his 100th league goal according to his page.

i wouldnt sell him for any money, he is pricesless to us
if he can keep up this form next season, and we go into the premiership he will be worth even more, and its not like we dont have the money to improve anyway, i do think he is the best striker in the championship and would have a decent strike rate in the premiership if his service was good, if we can establish a good partner for him (Sharp or Webber both looked good with him) then i think they will get 35+ goals together next season :D

Providing he stays fit of course!

Fully agreed. We're never going to get anything if we keep seeing ourselves as a 'selling' club, anyway. We've got other revenue streams now; we don't have to sell our best assets in order to keep the bank manager happy - especially if those assets could be the difference between us achieving success and staying stuck in the doldrums.
