It's so flat and stale at times that you could fall asleep. I know we were playing swindon yesterday, but even still the whole first half not one chant during open play. You could hear a pin drop at times. We are playing good football and there is optimism surrounding this season. It still feels like we are waiting for a goal to go in before we come to life. Why couldnt the first half be more like the second. Don't get me wrong im not saying its horrendous just not great at times. A good atmosphere i really do believe helps the players, it gives them belief, confidence, energy and passion. A quiet 20k must be horrible to play in front of! I woukd rather play in an empty stadium than 20k of silence, would make me feel nervous.

We used to be amongst the loudest in the country but feel we are quite timid/average these days. How can we improve this and why do you think this is?

Safe standing?
Singing section - aka palace?
Is it the calibre of teams we are playing?

Or is it just me? Can't deny that the PL days we used to shatter opposing teams with noise/chanting

I was just about to start a similar thread. I've just watched the 2nd half and was really pleased by the frequency, variety and volume of the singing. no doubt the TV sound picks up crowd noise more readily than my tired old ears, but still, it sounded good.

We need a singing section on the kop, central, at the rear. The pockets of people who try to create an atmosphere are too spread out, and often cancel each other out.

It's like a fucking morgue at times, and it's such a shame given the football we're playing.

Football fans in England are reactive, not proactive.

Anywhere else in Europe, the noise is deafening even well before kick-off and not conditional on how the team is playing or the division they're in. In other words it's the proper definition of support.

It won't pick up until promotion is secured, then we'll see a transformation.

I've noticed and thought the same, european, S-American fans are unbelievable. Could it be down to the fact that generally our support has a very diverse age range, male and women. On the continent they tend to be young men. I'm not saying we shouldnt let them in but with kids and elderly around i suppose there is a need to me more curtious...

It's always flat and it's disappointing. What more could we have asked for on the pitch this season? I know it's still L1 but it should be better than it is. There's no excuse for it to be as poor as it is.

The odd chant can lift the intensity at key times and make a real difference. Yet we often go a whole half with nothing but silence. Time for our supporters to step up, but it just seems like we're out of the habit of actually making any noise.

yet another reason to get out of this division.

better support in the Championship = more away fans = gets the kop going.

H block will also come back for the bantaaaaaaaaar with the away fans.

A good atmosphere in the stadium has got nothing to do with singing moronic embarrassing songs about Woodward and Currie and having no money

It's about the raucous roar that goes up when we attack

It's about intimidation, enthusiasm, claiming for everything and not being happy when we don't get decisions.

The exciting and sometimes volatile undertone in the stands provides a much more intimidating atmosphere than a few drunken berks singing stupid songs about nothing particularly relevant

The atmosphere is always better when there is a large and vocal away support. It always lifts the Kop. For me it's the biggest factor.

Let's face it, in this division that doesn't happen too often.

Our problem is we are expectant.
I still go to the game expecting us to batter these smaller clubs. If we score or even win it feels as though that's what we should be doing and if we drawing or not pushing forward in a game then frustration builds at the Lane faster than any other ground I can think of.
It's been weird not being underdogs for so long.

I think many clubs fans are reporting similar

We only seem up for it as do many sets of supporters, if it's a game of magnitude and real importance

The problem with football in this country in general is that it's become overly polished and full of bullshit post-Taylor Report, Sky-era propaganda.
The football match is supposed to be a place for emotion and passion in all forms, as long as that passion is confined to singing, colour and atmosphere. Now it's being rammed down peoples throats that certain things can't be sung or said because the naughty swear words might hurt little Timothys ears. Even your flags have to be "fire safety approved" for fucks sake.
An entire stand on John Street is off limits to me because I don't have kids and my Dads dead.
The stand opposite, which once rivalled the Kop for noise and atmosphere has become largely gentrified, The Bramall Lane end is inaccessible to home fans despite the fact that the away team usually only brings 500 at the most.
And the Kop? We once had a top class, highly original identity on there. Over time it's become the centrepoint for little scally wankers singing "Shoreham Boys" over and over again, or whatever generic shite they ripped off Twitter or Facebook. Probably the same mega hard twats who vandalise concourses at away games.

These are the things that hold it all back. But it can be improved slightly by getting out of this division.

Not sure why anyone would get too excited at the proposition of playing relegation contenders Swindon Town in December.

When we play the top teams and when it starts to get a bit tastey towards the back end of the season (as long as we're still in the mix) we'll hear a lot more noise.

We need a band to create the atmosphere just like at Hillsborough. I'm so jealous they have a band and wish we'd thought of it first. Now we can't do it because we'd be accused of copying them even though at the end of the day it's the match day atmosphere that counts.

While we're at it we should bring back the inflatable swords as well. They were great. Good old days.

Smell Pork.

100% blade, i just wondering why we have allowed it to become so bad. Unless you think it's good? a good mate of mine is Cambridge United and I go watch them play every now and again, everytime ive been they have been more vocal than we have with an extra 15/16k, i can't get my head around it and wont let him come to a united game as he would take the piss, although genrally we are fairly vocal when we travel.

Well
That's cheered me right up

Those clubs have a bleeding drummer - Huddersfield, Wigan, Pigs etc- isn't it just awful. Just desperately trying to contrive an atmosphere.

Mind you I don't like the cheesy 'goal' music or tbh having to sing along to GBH as John Denver is faded and we are expected to pick up the baton - so much better when spontaneous, like when away.

You can't create an atmosphere with some failed DJ pressing buttons on a tape machine in a control room.

I thought the atmosphere was OK yesterday. Difficult for it to be much better without a decent in a seated stadium.

Supportive, even if it wasn't raucous.

Thought the arbour lads at the back of the Kop in A block tried to raise the atmosphere in 2nd harf and did an ok job for me...

Like these...

Seriously though, as shit and as embarrassingas that is, i would take that over yest first half, without hesitation.

Arent they just trying to keep warm and fit ? Thats not atmosphere !!

2nd half i though was OK, but far too often games are played under conditions like the 1st, which was very poor IMO.

I woukd like the kop, or a section to be safe standing, with a 'singing section' a bit like palace.

I think its a case of the south stand where I sit and the John street stand dont have anyone making any noise. I always sing the GCB song but there is no fucker near me who sings it or chants when the Kop do when there is some excitement. Big games apart its a shame as our away fans are the best . Think also it suffered when the G and H gangways on the south stand was stopped some time ago
