Missed the game because I was in the NGH recovering from a virus that that made me feel that I was dying. I had been taking steroids for my kidney condition and this affected my immune system. I was ill in bed throughout Xmas and was sent to hospital on Boxing Day evening. Stopped taking steroids ever since and have been clear from the kidney problem for the last 12 years

What you saying about steroids Silent?

Scott Parker coming in his 2nd game for Charlton. That was a decent side emerging for the Addicks there. Went on to be in the Prem for a good 10 years!

Commentator: "Still a lot of speculation about Taylor's future at Sheff Utd" - Then we sell Dean & Fjortoff a few weeks later, what a mistake!

This was the year I first started watching United regularly. Gareth Taylor was an early favourite of mine. Curtis Woodhouse is still one of the fastest players I've ever seen at the Lane.

Remarkable to think that a few months later Charlton would be promoted after conceding four more at Wembley.

Had a look at that and it was a very entertaining game. Quite impressed by how we looked, and in terms of formation and player types there are a few similarities to what we're playing at the moment.

Kelly-----------------------------I----------------------------------Moore
Marker Lee Nilsen-----------------------I------------Basham Ebanks-Landell Wright
Borbokis------------------------Woodhouse------I------Freeman------------------------------------Lafferty
Hutchinson Ford ----------------------I--------------------------- Coutts Fleck-------
Saunders------------------------I------------------------------------Duffy
Deane Taylor -----------------------I------------------------------- Sharp Done

(the above looks right on my desktop as I write, but will probably look a right mess on mobiles, etc?)

GK: Kelly/Moore - Two excellent keepers. We've seen more of Kelly, but Moore seems to have solved what was becoming a bit of a problem for us.

RWB: Borbokis /Freeman - Similar as player types, but obviously Freeman is a poor man's version of the exceptional Borbokis
LWB: Woodhouse/Lafferty - Quinn played most games in this position, but Woodhouse was emerging as a great prospect and had a superb game. His energy was excellent. Lafferty is more of a steady eddie.
RCH: Marker/Basham - Experienced guys who both also played in central midfield.
CCH: Lee/EEL - Notice that? Scary! Or maybe not. Both big lads, although EEL is more commanding. Lee was on loan from Chelsea and didn't stay long.
LCH: Nilsen/Wright - Experienced left footers, not the biggest for centre halves, but both tackled well. Nilsen better on the ball. Wright more reliable.

RCM: Hutchinson/Coutts - Excellent playmakers, not great defensively
LCM: Ford/Fleck - Both small midfielders. Ford was more a poor man's Leon Britton, trying to keep things simple in midfield, struggled when asked to do more than that. Fleck has far more to offfer and is a pretty complete midfielder.
ACM: Saunders/Duffy - Talented guys operating behind the two strikers. Saunders played behind two big lads in Deane and Taylor (or Fjørtoft), and made plenty of runs beyond them as well as down the channels, on and off the ball. Duffy tries to get on the ball and use his creativity and technique to set up things. Duffy has more defensive work, wheras Saunders was allowed to bomb forward more.

ST: Deane/Sharp - Two goalscorers and heroes among fans. Deane had better physique, using his height and strength, but was also quite mobile and a powerful runner.
ST: Taylor/Done - Different player types, but both were/are a handful for defenders. Taylor was superb in the air, while Done's sheer work rate has been important for us.

Charles Green used the support for Taylor as an excuse for selling Fjortoft. Of course, if you'd asked Blades fans to choose between them, they'd have picked Fjortoft. Green knew this, but he's a scumbag.

Youngest son was a mascot for this game, great day out and great memories, thanks for posting it. We have it on video tape but no longer have a video player. He still has his photo book from the day that United gave him, Mick Rooker really did a good job to make it a memorable day.
