John Street stand. Built in the reign of Mike MacDonald (and Charles Green). I think it was 20 years not 30 years ago.

Opened October 1996 for a home game against Tranmere Rovers.

From personal recollection, the two years between 1994 and 1996 when the Lane was a 3 sided ground, matchday at the Lane was a horrible, miserable experience every home game, as the expanse of wasteland on John Street was a visual reminder of the maliase the club found itself in, it was usually freezing cold on the kop as wind bit in from the empty side, and the atmosphere was not shite.

I tried to see the bright side at the time, reasoning that it was like a trip down memory lane to before the South Stand got built. But it was really just a trip down shit stadium lane.

I'm not allowed on the John Street anymore because my dads dead and I have no children.

I remember away days to places like Fratton Park, Vale Park and Ayresome Park and being genuinely jealous because they had a 4 sided ground.

I also seem to recall that during our TV appearances there was some pretty creative camera work to keep the houses on John Street out of shot.

OK, who had the banner made, and unravelled it saying something along the lines of "Thanks Mike for our new stand". Own up! Own up now!

I just started going when this was built, think my first game was the season before.

I always felt the club were never ambitious enough with the new JSS (I'd also argue the same with the South Stand). For me at the very least they should have taken the back of the stand right to the edge of the road and had the entrances (on the outside) covered, stand seats should have gone all way to the back of the stand, with the two layers of boxes directly above the back rows (rather than behind as they are now). That would have made room for an extra 6 to 10 rows, or 1.5-2.5k seats.

thats why when we develop the kop we do it right , remove the mound and utilise all the space
will need it with CW taking us back into the big time

Get with the future and have a standing area on the new Kop. Right along the front with a trench and a white fence at the front. Has to be Blades, it has to be...

As for John St, the block near the away fans was always the best. After South Stand H block became too conscious a place to be, the upper John St seats were great.. Great atmosphere and the narrowness at the back with the tea bar, low ceiling and knowing you were above the players at half time, all contributed to the great feeling. Marvellous! Places like Peterborough, Swindon and Southend bring elements of those memories back. Far better than the sterility of the more modem ground.

Retro is the future!

I don't think we can, something to do with the light requirements for the houses on John Street.

First time I've ever heard that one, can't believe it would make much difference to the light compared with what they've got already.

Sorry mate it was Mike MacDonald. Remember it like yesterday.
Oh, thought it was a joke, didn't realise MacDonald had actually had a banner made with 'thanks Mike' on it.
