Chesterfield are in a strange place at the moment. I think that they got carried away a couple of years back when they seemed to be going places. New ground, new owners and everything seemed to be rosy as they got promoted to League 1 under Paul Cook. They had a very decent side for a while and they played some excellent football. As i live in Chesterfield, i like to keep an eye on how they're doing and went to the boxing day game against Peterborough the year before last as a mate had free corporate tickets. They demolished Posh that day and Paul Cook masterminded a good win with a side that was perhaps at its peak.
The big mistake they made was bringing Dean Saunders in when Cook left, he wasn't the right fit for them and was really only a bit of a name. It was never going to work.
Bringing Danny Wilson in was right, but they've sold off all of the stars that they had and they've recently realised that even with these sales, they've only made a tiny profit. They've realised that they don't have any money and with gates now averaging much lower than they really expected, they're not really likely to go anywhere soon unless they bring their own youngsters through or pick up little gems like Doyle or Morsy again.
Wilson and Morgan perhaps need to be smarter in their signings and today they looked tired (lack of fitness?). Ched going off really reduced their outlet to a tricky winger in Ariyibi, they simply need Ched fit. Humphreys and Evatt are good experienced pros but they're overweight and at the wrong end of their careers.
Chesterfield need some young blood and they're venting their anger at Dave Allen, but i don't think that Allen has ever promised them big money signings. They are a club struggling financially and until recently they were strong in the community and corporate side, but the corporate side has also gone under new management and the prices have rocketed.
They need a buyer really because they are in a cycle where they need higher attendances to generate more money, but they also need a side worth watching. And i think most of all they need to be patient with Wilson and Morgan. They showed today that they could give it a go and whilst it didn't last, the two sides were clearly miles apart. We were able to bring in decent subs in the second half and they lost their star players with injuries to be replaced by a 39 year old.
Today we struggled with them for 20 mins, but we showed that difference in class. A class that we certainly didn't have last season and we would've lost there under Adkins... They've played us at the wrong time and we hammered them 1-4
