Time to question Wilder.

I had a disagreement with Ricky about managers coming in and not strengthening certain positions. He said fans could point this out, I said professionals didn't need that help. Well Clough Adkins and Wilder have shown in their cases he was right.
I've always thought that managers knew better than us mug punters, and especially me who's never played football to any other standard than a kick-about with mates.. but I found Tuesday night unbelievable that I could blatantly see how uncomfortable our players were with the long ball up to Clarke and yet nothing was done about it.

At least Adkins would have used players like Hammomd and Woolford instead of just paying god knows how much getting them out the place.

Because what superstars they both turned out to be.
Everyone wanted rid of both and let's not forget it was Adkins who lumbered us with that nob Hammond on, it is said, very good wages.
Even when he knew the fans detested him.

I was as wrong as everyone else when Adkins came in. By the end of the seaso , there was no way he was going to remain. He'd lost the fans. The team had lost the fans.

At the minute it seems we lurch from one disaster to another.
We wanted the clear out of deadwood and players associated with failure. We brought in some players not many people were moaning about (I remember reading on here about the O'Connell signing being decent - last two games he has cost us big time and is no better than Collins or McEverly!)

Fuck knows what we are going to do, we've tried everything that has still led us on this painfully slow car crash with not even a glimmer of an end in sight to this period.

What can we do?

Bringing in Jake Wright at centre back will help. He is a top bloke and a proper leader. We could do with that massive right back (grandison?) as well coming in, perhaps then we would stop conceding from set pieces. Wilder also needs to look at his tactical set up and think about freshening up his strikers.

Come on Hull get off the pot we need the tidy sell on fee for Maguire .Waiting until the last day to sell won't help as the fee will disappear into the black hole.

Ah but have you seen how uncomfortable they are with the short ball? ;)

Before we played the first game this season I'd say most Blades probably agreed that our first thoughts on this summer's signings were of better quality than what we had available last season. Although (me included) the majority of us still had some doubts about the spine of the team. As I've already mentioned earlier in the thread, the team still hasn't gelled yet after 4 games in.
IMO they are certainly no better. And this isn't hindsight (honest) I was concerned when they were signed. I hoped to be proved wrong but so far am not convinced I will be.

This clown has to be sacked after this result 2nd from bottom zero wins WILDER OUT NOW

He needs time to build. Rash decisions and a lack of commitment to longterm planning are what got us in this mess in the first place. He's got one hell of a job clearing the previous managers' mess.

That's the kind of argument politicians make (and one, no doubt, we'll be having when the next useless article is appointed as manager).

Look, it's not about 'give him time' or 'we're impatient'. With every passing game (including Oxford next week) it's becoming obvious that Wilder is out of his depth. McCabe didn't bring in the latest pile of dross that Wilder has. McCabe doesn't pick the tactics. McCabe doesn't ensure we have - at best - one shot on target per game. McCabe doesn't tell Clarke to 'nearly' score with every opportunity. McCabe hasn't told our top scorer last season to look completely disinterested. Wilder has already lost the dressing room and has spit the dummy out with refusing a post-match interview. The kind of pressure he's used to is 5k crowds and a hack from The Northampton Evening Examiner.

As galling as it is, once again we've picked a manager who is simply not up to the job. The longer we stick with Wilder, the more we'll fall behind 20th place. Have I got a solution? Have I fuck. Any more than those who state that 'we need a box-to-box midfielder' or 'we need a CB' but can't name anybody who is available, affordable or would be prepared to see his career wrecked by a move to this car-crash. What I do know is that already CW has lost the plot. He has been allowed to bring in a bunch of players who are talentless and no better than the crap Adkins left behind.

Who's idea was it to replace all the squad, may i ask?

Root cause you say.
That's right. We were desperate for the previous squad to be offered new contracts, weren't we?

Can't you go back to made up ITK posts?

Sorry to remind you of this post! Car crash

While we are playing well at the moment , and in a good position.
We will hit a sticky patch sometime over the rest of the season , then most of the previous posters will be out in force again .
Some people should be hanging there fucking heads in embarrassment at the moment and stick to Fifa 16
A lot of shit had to go , and most praised him for his no nonsense approach to shite players , he saw it from the stands last season as a fan .
He brought in some players , realised his system wasn't working , and changed it .
Well done Tuffty keep up the good work .

At the time it was fair enough to question if Wilder knew what he was doing, the first game went well enough, then the next few performances were poor and he didn't seem to be able to get the players to do what he wanted and looked a bit lost. Unlike the previous manager he managed to work out what was wrong, make a few changes to the system and players and create not just a winning team, but a team the fans can get behind.

The Oxford game was crucial because it produced a result and showed a bit of fighting spirit that everyone could build on. If we'd lost that game with a whimper with everyone playing as poorly as Hussey did then it would have been fair to wonder if Wilder was up to the job. Instead he found a system that worked, replaced the weak link from that game and has continued the momentum from there.

There was certainly a degree of panicking going off back in August wasnt there...!

How does that poem go again? ...something like....'if you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it all on Wilder...' ;)

At the time it was fair enough to question if Wilder knew what he was doing.

Was it though..? I dont agree. Not saying some of his tactics or team selections in individual games couldnt be questioned but it is highly unfair to be questioning whether a new manager is up to the job after just 4 games into a season with a totally brand new team. I thought that was ridiculous by some to be honest. If we were bottom four now i would think it fair to question whether he knew what he was doing...not after 4 games though. Talk about the lynch mob attitude.

Cos the team needed time my friend!! Tbf i understood perfectly the frustrations at the time but some were ready to lynch CW before he had had a chance. Onwards for promotion now though.

I certainly underestimated Wilder - for the first time in a while, we have a manager who identified the problems and fixed them. Credit to him.

But I stand by what I said then. We were shocking. No more Long, no more Clark, no more Hussey, adding EEL and others (Wright, Coutts, Freeman most notably), and 3-5-2 have made big differences. It's not shocking any more because of widespread changes. The team from the Southend game hasn't just "come good". It didn't just need time, it needed surgery, and thanks to Wilder it got it.

Thats a fair point re the changes to the team. Though the point i was making about time being needed was that most of the players moved into the team were already here, CW just needed to find the right blend. I also think there was an element of some if the fans (not pointing the finger at anyone in particular here) just being completely pissed off from the last few seasons and unreasonable expectations being demanded from the start from CW. Patience was running thin even before a ball had been kicked this season cos fans were fed up with years of constant failure. Luckily Chris is a bright guy, identified the issues and changed it round. Hes a lucky lad to manage us...and were lucky to have him manage us.

The Oxford game that was a week away had already proved that Wilder was out of his depth??

how many of the wednesday fans that posted earlier in this thread are no longer with us
looking back the bile in some of the comments could only come from pigs in disguise

Some of us take responsibility when we get things wrong. Others sail on serenely to the next piece of unaccountable drivel....and then the next.

We had examples on Saturday.

I also find it interesting to look back at this post, because it shows certain people in their true light for being what they are ...and that I'm afraid is a negative drain of energy on the club - and some are downright dangerous with it too because they are capable of leading others with only half a candlewatt of brain power, with them.

I'm not pointing the finger at you Mr Ginger Gnome because I've not seen that you were particularly vocal about this at the time. However, I have to disagree with what you've written here - it is most definitely NOT fair or even reasonable in the slightest to start questioning a manager's credentials after just 4 games - totally ridiculous! I saw 3 of those 4 games (admittedly I missed the debacle against Southend when we beat ourselves by all accounts) and I thought any of those three games could have gone either way. In particular I thought we were desperately unlucky at Bolton in that first game and played really well. (We had some people phoning up RS and saying the job was "too big for Wilder" after just 2 games FFS!).

My thoughts at the time were these:...we'd just hired a new manager who has been successful in all his previous jobs. He'd inherited the worst Sheffield United squad I think I'd ever seen in all the years I've been watching them. He'd wasted no time in turning the team over with a pitch-fork and made some big decisions and he'd not finished the recruiting either. And we should all know, if we have even the slightest clue about football, that it DOES take a bit of time - a few weeks, sometimes a few months, for a new team to gel.

The only observation I made during that poor run was that we were struggling to pass the ball in midfield and I suggested that he should get Coutts back in there as this would make a difference. (I also posted to point out that last season was Coutt's first back following a long injury and that we shouldn't judge him just on that - drawing comparisons with Lee Williamson who was also hit and miss in his first season back from injury but went on to be a key midfield player for us).

Aren't the facts that some folks will just not admit that they got it absolutely and totally wrong? Never mind this trying to justify in part or whole what was said at the time. It was totally premature and unjustified - now stop making excuses and try and learn something from it for next time - because for sure there will be another blip in our form this season and these folks will be back again questioning the manager, the club, the stewards, the mascots, the ball-boys, the programme sellers, the catering staff, everyone...

Does this apply to your criticism of Billy Sharp or is he still ready for the knackers' yard?

15 games in. Things are great after a terrible start. 31 games to go. Perhaps it's better to wait a while before proclaiming who's definitely right.
