in the football league

This will quite rightly be rubbed in the pigs faces...

But it is also damn impressive that Sheffield as a two club city is in the top 10 twice, emphasises how absurd it is that neither club has been able to go on a prolonged Premier league run in the last decade.

Slightly misleading because it includes years outside the Football league as well.

Our gate in the Prem was 30,512 which swells the average. This would be the average Pig fan's bone of contention, though at least we can average 30k+ this century. Most people who attended the last time they had a 30k average are retired or dead.

Issue is not so much with us as we are one of the better supported without doubt and so are Wednesday.

Issue is more with Fulham. Their top gate of 25,293 is inflated by Premier League clubs. As a FL club they would definitely average less than the pair of us and by a Long distance.

Wolves also inflated by more flirtations with the top league than us I believe.

Derby is impressive though having a new stadium added to their attendances.

Great effort by Sheffield overall, given the lack of success. I knew taking Big Daddy off the telly on a Saturday would have a positive knock on somewhere!

I've seen that before, how the hell are Fulham there!?

Still surprising though. I didn't think Fulham got that many

Agree that Fulham are quite a small club and would struggle to get 10,000 in league 1.

However Craven Cottwge holds just over 25,000 and Fulham are the only club in the PL that had a neutral stand.

London is a massive place, with a massive population and they had this initiative where if you wanted to watch a PL match as a neutral you could easily get tickets at Craven Cottsge and sit with 1000's of other neutrals.

The Fulham neutral stand is similiar to what Wednesday had at Hillsborough.

Hillsboro was the most under capacity stadium in the top flight in the early PL years.
In fact it's probably close to the top of the list as being the least filled stadium in England.
You could say SWFC are historical the Kings of having the most empty seats.

So if neutrals wanted to the watch top flight football in the 90's then Hillsboro was the easiest place to get tickets. Away fans of big clubs used to love it because when the away end was sold out, they could easily get tickets in Wednesday's North and South stands.

Just to give some context to these numbers:
Leeds population 751500
Sheffield population 552700
Bratfut population 522500

Leeds' famous population trick including the outer towns (Wetherby etc.) in the overall total, as a lot of these places now form part of Leeds Council. I think the actual city is more like 450,000. Bradford is similar, swallowing up some outer towns. Sheffield doesn't have this.

By comparison, Sheffield's metropolitan area is about 750,000 also.

Having said that, the wider urban area around Leeds is of course much bigger than Sheffield. Wakefield, York and even Bradford will all help them out with getting fans in.
