I'd be questioning why we're paying £1.4m for someone in our position full stop. However Man Utd and Everton aren't in our position and are in a much healthier position where they can afford to pay a lot more money than we can.
As long as we include some healthy add ons it's probably a decent deal, as long as the money is also reinvested in to the first team!

Premier League teams can also afford to take an (in our position) expensive risk on potential, £2m would have been my asking price, could easily be another Slew but could just as easily be another Kyle Walker, who had we held on to another year we could have got at least double what we sold him for.
We could not double our money after 12 months because its clear he will not get a regular game. Hence taking the money on offer now.

Had we been offered and taken £1.5m for "Young Joe" at a time when most of the naive S2,fanbase were singing his name and wanting him to be "first name on the team sheet" what an outcry there would have been.

The reason the gamble is bound to pay off more often than not is that the vast majority of Academy players don't "train on". In the particular case of Sheffield United there is the rather odd additional feature of people thinking players are a lot better than they are because they are that ludicrous phenomenon "one of our own". There are still people out there who will tell you that Calamity George and Little Louis just need a little bit more time...and then a bit more.

The first bit about Ironside is all conjecture, another player (like Reed) who isn't comparable as we didn't receive any bids (to our limited knowledge)

As for your second paragraph, there is certainly an element of truth that our fan base are guilty of over hyping players. (I don't think that's a phenomenon exclusive to S2). This I'm not denying, and is one of the many things I agree with you on.

Ultimately though I asked if you could prove that "the gamble is more likely to pay off than not". Something which you've failed to do.

Since our fall from the premier league we've sold 5 academy prospects, and only 2 are comparable to DCL (Slew & Walker) as Naughton, Lowton & Maguire had all been given the opportunity to play games before they were sold.

Far enough, we had Blackburn's pants down with £1m, but it pales in significance to the money we lost by selling Walker early. So do tell me again, why it's a gamble worth taking?

You are wasting your time with this mug pal.... honestly

wasting your time.

James Shield just tweeted that no deal has been agreed yet despite an improved offer.

Well of course it hasnt been agreed. Thats not how United roll on transfer deadline day. We wait...and then we wait some more...and then when the time is just right...we accept, bundle the latest poor sod out of the car which has been silently parked in the buying clubs car park, before frog marching him to the contract and making him sign. Then we wait a bit more...before we confirm it and then when the deadline time is nearly up we shout that we are all in for a shit load of targets with bids fired off left right and centre now we have money to spend...before the clock unfortunately beats us and we sadly announce that we 'were so close but just couldnt get the 10 deals over the line' before we gleefully announce that 'but on the bright side the loan window opens up in a week and we will be very active'. Thats how we roll.

Different this year though, we can't spend the money in the loan window. Or not spend the money in the loan window. Cos there isn't one.

We will look a complete shambles if sell another asset and only sign a loanee. Forget Lavery last night, that's easily covered by the Adams sale.
Someone keep track of Scarborough quick! I can sense a £1.4mil residential project being added to their portfolio anytime soon...

and your point is ?

We will have brought in 11-12 players during this transfer window by 11pm tonight. Forget Lavery ? Why ? At our level many purchases and funded by sales....hopefully CW has purchased the right ones.

As the joint owners appear to be only putting a certain level of funding in to cover our losses, where do you think CW will get the money from to buy players ? As we are making a loss ( mainly down to McCabe's mis-management in my opinion) isn't it obvious we have to sell to pay some of the 'bills'

As for the Scarborough quip..........I assume you believe he has done this before and will do again. Any proof ? The accounts would be a good start

Lavery is only a small fee, it's less than 10% of the Adams fee.
That's the disgraceful bit, cutting back as much as we have.
And McCabe? Trouser money? No way

As a buying club on transfer deadline day, SUFC are the equivalent of a Johovah's Witness turning up at your doorstep waiting to be abused, ridiculed and then told to 'fuk off for wasting my time'.

fill yer boots, they certainly show we're making a loss, they also show one of our biggest outgoings to be 2 interest payments to the Scarborough Group. Although these are from 2015 and don;t show any business with the prince involved. Latest ones not available.

The juvenile and snide (defamatory actually, but you can say what you're like if you're not worth a bean) comments are flowing thick (and boy, do I mean thick) and fast now...

Can we have the fax machine one, now. That's a side-splitter. Ironically of course, one of the 'fax' players is with us permanently now and the other has disappeared into tartan obscurity...

. So the club owes money to another company and interest shouldn't be charges. The fact that McCabe puts the money back in to cover losses is irrelevant then ? I want someone to buy him out as much as anyone but he isn't exactly feathering his own nest is he

I never said he was mate, tbh I meant to add to the post saying thats what people will concentrate on, because its a grey area that people can exploit to bash McCabe.

Interest on loans (just a small drop in the ocean of the fortune put into our club by KM). Loans that can not and will never be repaid (interest is not repayment, nor anywhere near) unless and until we are established in the Premier League, at which point anyone with any sense would be perfectly happy about it.

By the way, #226 was not aimed at you. Although it appears sequentially that is an accident of timing.

:)

Wilder, what the fuck can't you see.

You have become a fans man, or to put it another way a fanny.

Man u, Everton and now England??????

What do they see ?
Maybe we need the money but we very surely need a better team, a winning team. It's not coming with Wilders style.

Just been on sky.

'We understood it earlier to be 1.4 million, now understand its more or less rising to 1 million.'

Eh? How the fuck have we managed to talk ourselves out of 400k?

Nope...just a ramble about something that doesn't happen in the real world even at our club.

My post was a tad sarcastic about the workings of the club on transfer deadline day. Perhaps i need to make that clear in all my posts...just in case some on here are incapabable of recognising the obvious. Still i will just keep rambling on as and when i see fit to do so. Please feel free to ignore my future ramblings cos i wont be offended if you cant lower yourself to conversing with me.

Perhaps it was by negotiating a sell-on payment clause into the sale contract that could bring in more than the £400K

I thought it was claimed, "that due to the transfer window changes and the lack of loans available after the window closes, that our academy would be a godsend and give us an advantage"..........well it won't if we've flogged em all off before the window closes.

We don't need the academy, we have Leon Clarke.

Everton newspaper claiming this is now confirmed, if so I completely take back my last post, really didn't see this happening today!

Absolutely shocking that we feel the need to resort to this.

We better have someone decent coming in permanently. And I don't mean a second rate journeyman striker.
