I think they feel the push in their back and worry the ref won't give it. If the ref doesn't give the foul, the man behind may have a free header. So they gamble and think if i handball it and emphasise the push, the ref will give the foul and the offender will never get to head it.

He has however received a push in the back. A push as he was jumping in the air causing him to lose balance. His natural reaction was to try and regain balance, and in this case raised his arm up higher. Arms go up as they jump to help leverage, and of course to protect their faces etc.

But anyone thinking it was done intentionally is being a bit of a twat.
