Yep. He got cover in before he'd even got his first choice. As Ricky says wasted time on KMc and seemingly never had anyone else on the radar.

Before we played the first game this season I'd say most Blades probably agreed that our first thoughts on this summer's signings were of better quality than what we had available last season. Although (me included) the majority of us still had some doubts about the spine of the team. As I've already mentioned earlier in the thread, the team still hasn't gelled yet after 4 games in.

It was a massive mistake going into the season with such a suspect defence. That should've been avoided at all costs. We are genuinely incapable of keeping a clean sheet.

With all that Che money sloshing around & with Hammond, Woolford & Brayford off the payroll, should be PLENTY of room for incomings.

Fuck knows why a dominant right-sided centre-half & a dominant central mid haven't been signed yet. But we need proper ones, & not on-the-cheap stopgaps.

Morsy's basically waiting to be signed by someone. So is Nathan Byrne.

Brayford not exactly off the pay roll we are still paying 2/3 of his wages and he needs replacing don't see the point in getting rid.

There can't be that much money available as what you think, Hammond and Woolford have been paid off and we're subsidising Brayford's wages so no there won't be "PLENTY".

Add paying off Adkins and his staff and compensation to Northampton it's no wonder we are skint.

Said it at the time that we should have stuck with Adkins and it's looking more and more likely I was right. Hopefully I'll end up being wrong.

At least Adkins would have used players like Hammomd and Woolford instead of just paying god knows how much getting them out the place.

Doesn't matter how much money a manager has to spend, it has to be spent wisely.

Of course it has to be spent wisely, but a restricted budget still seriously affects the manager's ability to sign not just quality but also the right character of player.

Good points. I would say that with the budget he has been given, it was harder for him to recruit the quality players, but that those players he's brought in are currently falling well below the standard that even the budget he was given demanded.

Agree but personally (and I'll get my tin hat on and won't argue with anyone because it's just my preference ) I would have preferred to give Adkins the opportunity to clear out and rebuild rather than any manager who has never managed higher than league 2 - and that's not a dig at the manager.

As much as the top management will always be responsible - they backed Clough to bring in a £1.75m player, backed Adams in bringing in Sharp and Hammond a great cost - backed Wilder in paying off a load of players at great cost and and realeasing others with fuck all in return - backed Wilder in recruiting 7 or so players and his own management team - people will always be upset when we sell what we believe are our best players but that is football when you play in the lower leagues and makes a loss year on year.

Wilder would have been given a budget and took it. Plenty on here were saying that Adams would be sold so I'm sure CW was aware of that and planned accordingly. We've ended up with a poor defence who bypass the poor midfield lumping it up to two strikers who haven't gelled yet, not liking each other didn't stop Cole and Sheringham forming an effective partnership so unless one or both are acting like a petulant child, it's likely to be the tactics.

This is where we'll probably have to agree to disagree, I don't think he has been given enough funds because we've had to spend a hefty portion on pay offs and compo etc etc. Remember we've had too massive a squad for 2-3 years now that was unnecessarily signed by Clough, despite him saying he wanted a small tight knit squad himself.

It is quite worrying that things that many, if not all of us see (2 egs: Basham can't play in a midfield 4, we need better centre halves) appear to have not been obvious to managers who are paid to see these things.

Absolutely. I`m sure most knew our spine was non existant for years. I said it,Herbert said it,loads on BM and here knew it,yet successive professional managers clearly didn`t,even though the evidence was there to see every week.

Indeed, to me Wilson seems like McGahey but for some reason is our first choice CB. I would certainly be sticking him out on loan, he looks like he needs nursing through the games.. I'm just not sure O'Connell is that experienced enough himself to be doing it.

I doubt that he was told he had x to spend but had to pay Adkins compo out of it. He will have known what he had plus what he could expect from an Adams sale and immediately set about spending some on "cover" without getting a spine in. The doubt crept in when he asked Basham where he wanted to playffs.
