Aaand ... whilst aspiring to be a coach and backing up 'reliable George' we might not see aberrations happen like we did on Saturday.

Long has been woeful for some time now.

pommpey

Straight question just out of curiosity: would you rather have Paddy Kenny starting for us tonight than George Long?

Simple yes or no.

No it's the difference between real life football and altering the budgets on football manager.

How do you know? Here's my question for you.

How much has Wilder been attributed as a transfer budget this season? Furthermore, being as people say 'Clough spent millions', how much did he actually spend on players?

It's okay offering snarky asides. It won't make the question go away though. If we were really that shit-broke, why the pitch? Why not make bids for those players in the hope that one or two would come? You saying that Zamora would not make a dent this season? What about the others?

And please don't parallel Hammond with those mentioned. He was gash before we signed him.

At the moment, I'd have John Hope playing for us, rather than Long.

Too soon?

I'd bring Kenny in to back Long up as an option and to improve his game. I'd play Long tonight and have five at the back. In the area. With gloves on. Playing goalie-wag.

pommpey

Yes... Paddy Kenny. Who is player / coach at Northampton and looked like this a few months back. Last played a game of football nearly 2 years ago and last had a semi-decent run of games almost 3 years ago.

Absolutely the kind of player we need rather than championship rejects on their way down looking for one last past day.

I swear people are on the wind up on this forum despite the attempts to make their posts appear legit.

Yeah, we should sign him....Rab C. Nesbitt

'Snarky asides' is s great way to simply dismiss anyone who challenges the viewpoint that we could go out and sign a load of top end championship and ex pl players and have no budget issues.

Hammond can absolutely be compared to the expensive ex PL you mention as an ex PL player who had played most of his football outside of the league we're in.

I'm as critical as anyone of how we're run, but there's a difference between sensible criticism and simple referencing a load of players at the top end of the league above and then getting annoyed that we aren't in for them.

I'm much more annoyed that we failed to match the bid for Wilder's top scorer from the league below last season.

He ducks, he dives, he swerves. Perhaps you should go in net, Pomps?

How exactly would Kenny improve Long's game? We already have goalkeeping coaches and they're not ones who've been at it for 5 minutes like Paddy has. He's hardly going to challenge him for his spot.

And yes, very much too soon. Bit of a gutter comment that.

Okay. Lets look amongst the 2016 released list, shall we?

For a start, I'd have Paddy Kenny back in a heartbeat. Not only does he know Bramall Lane, I reckon he's be able to mentor our current fuck-up-per-game kid between the sticks. Instead, he's gone to Northampton. QPR seem to have jettisoned a hell of a lot of players with PL experience, and some who could make a dent at our level. Bidding for people like Traore or Hill would have been encouraging. even if their wages are high, you pay for what you get. Faurlin left QPR too. I'd have stuck in a speculative ask for Bobby Zamora (instead of Clarke) and definitely broke the bank for Dan Burn. Steven Warnock was ditched as well, wasn't he?

This is just off the top of my head. Instead, we have managed to snag one person from Birmingham, with our talented attacker going the other way, for cough-ety-cough.

Now I know this is going to attract a lot of 'fucking hell! you are fucking joking! not that cunt!" and "we've made that mistake before with expensive upper division chimps" but that was Dean fucking Hammond, a man seldom seen tearing up the centre of the park for anyone. But we fucking signed the bastard, even though to anyone it was difficult to see where he'd make any impact. What I have briefly suggested is what we (maybe) should be aiming at.

pommpey

The fact that you think we should have signed Paddy Kenny, and that Faurlin, Zamora and Traore are realistic and practical essentially destroys any chance of having a rational discussion.

Business has been good for what he's been given, which surprise surprise hasn't been enough to hoover up the very best of L1 and 2 to make promotion as secure as possible.

Yeah, we should sign him....Rab C. Nesbitt

Pommpey reckons Bert's response is hilarious. It's also in the collective third person as well!

Ho and indeed ho.

Yet your response was snarky. It alludes I use a CM approach to what I say. And you still haven't answered my question.

Hammond can absolutely be compared to the expensive ex PL you mention as an ex PL player who had played most of his football outside of the league we're in.

With the exception of he was shit before we signed him, with no real prospect of improving our game. I'd wager he was available, wanted a game - any game, and needed paying.

I'm as critical as anyone of how we're run, but there's a difference between sensible criticism and simple referencing a load of players at the top end of the league above and then getting annoyed that we aren't in for them.

I'm not annoyed. I'm proposing that list is the level which we should be pitching at, if we have any ambition to break out of this cycle of mediocrity.

I'm much more annoyed that we failed to match the bid for Wilder's top scorer from the league below last season.

And is he proven at this level, or above? Do you have information he'd be able to cut it at League One?

pommpey

Ah, the old argument to the stone. I can't discuss this because your suggestions are absurd (without proving the absurdity).

Tell me why we can buy a pitch, but not bring in a released midfielder on a substantive wage who will change our fortunes? Or does one preclude the other?

pommpey

Don't you like the fact we got a new pitch, pommpey? You should have mentioned it.

But no one - not even you, has any answer to it.

C'mon. Indulge me. Do you think it was wise spunking money on it when we needed two centre backs?

If 'yes', then show me your reasoning. If 'no' then you agree with me that McCabe in indulgent, impetuous and imcompetent.

I would have preferred two centre backs personally. However, we did need a new pitch and it looks fucking beautiful to be fair.

I haven't lost any sleep or almost set my keyboard on fire as a result of frantically typing to vent my anger, though.

The point about the pitch is one thing nobody can argue with you about, well at least not sensibly.

Don't forget the upgrades to Shirecliffe and the training facilities too.

No one cares Pomps is the honest answer. It's creating *another* thing to moan about when we have plenty already.

Like Sel Baki's CV, you're latching onto something that people aren't arsed about and isn't particularly relevant just to grind your axe.

Get on the Morsy thread - it's full of excitement!

Admit it pommpey, you've not recovered from the trauma of last season when you went to The Lane and discovered that the cricket pitch wasn't there anymore. :)

And what about our water bill? It must be ridiculous when you see how much the sprinklers are used before the match kicks off. AND at half time!

[QUOTE="Revolution, post: 1080209, member: 2349

This was an inevitable consequence of not doing enough in the close season.[/QUOTE]
Not quite sure what you mean by not done enough? We tried to sign MacFadzean but would have had to pay way over the price Burton paid due to MKs reluctance to sell to us. Do we pay over the odds or bust the budget? Been there done that. Whether we like it or not we are league one and have to spend accordingly. There is very little money in the pot from the tv companies etc

Yup. And they seem to have built over the old kop. And that floodlight is gone from the JSS stand top.

Mind you, I did sing 'Barrel of Money'

Good. Good stuff. And when the ball sails over the top of a struggling McEveley to be nodded in at the far post, 'at least the pitch looks good'.

I haven't lost any sleep or almost set my keyboard on fire as a result of frantically typing to vent my anger, though.

I'm more frustrated at people on here making whoopee about the pitch than finishing tenth, to be honest. That's disappointing, from a footballing point of view.

Well, no, actually. This thread is all about transfers. I have made some suggestions where we should be pitching. People say 'they are shit' (debatable) or 'we can't afford it'. I say, 'well, we could afford to buy a fucking pitch, on the basis of fuck all'.

It isn't 'another thing to moan about'. Either we reach out or we fucking die. Either we show ambition or we fail. People have put all sorts of bullshit about the reasoning behind the Desso, none of which stands up to scrutiny. No one can offer why we can't show ambition and sign Dan Burn, however. 'because we can't afford it'. Really. Really?

Like Sel Baki's CV, you're latching onto something that people aren't arsed about and isn't particularly relevant just to grind your axe.

And still no one offers a grain of explanation.

Get on the Morsy thread - it's full of excitement!

I'd like to see him signed. If we can afford him, of course. As Cook said at the time, "When we found out that he may be available, we moved heaven and earth to get him here."

Can you see those numpties doing that?
