Not exactly same owd:
"Although Macdonald’s shit was blocked, the difference in approach between the teams was evident when Denton tracked back to nick the ball off Jack O’Connell near the halfway line before releasing the Town winger into space."
Beat me to it there SB,haha.

Well at least it's been burst in pre-season rather than first game of actual season (ala last year). We can now all lower expectations. Again!

That's the issue. Don't raise them in the first place* The worst culprits are the professional slashers who expect great things whilst at the same time telling us exactly how the season will pan out slating anyone remotely positive.

* tongue in cheek :)

Slashers when they hear we've lost in pre-season...

Unfortunately the only way to shut them up is for the team to get us out of this shit hole division. The slashers have been proved right season after season. Take Barney last year for example, he was quick to have a go after form dipped but he ended up being the voice of reason winning people over to his way of thinking. The trouble is that the negativity is infectious and spills over on to the pitch so it's imperative the players perform this year and get some momentum going, otherwise it'll be a long hard slog again.

Not just saying this because I'm optimistic by nature, but tonight doesn't mean much, other than we still need two or three new signings and we know they'll be in place over the next week or two, according to Wilder's comments I would say. Today seemed a case of we turned up with a friendly hat on and Halifax didn't and its clearly a bigger game for them than us, as their big home friendly. I would expect us to raise our game when we play Derby at home in a week or so. What I would say is that I can't see the Done and Sharp partnership working. Sharp is definitely best of a bigger guy, otherwise Sharp starts holding up the ball more and we need him on the end of things. We do need someone like Clarke to bully opposition defenders. Not sure Adams is there yet, and he'll probably be off anyway!

Decent turn out of Blades fans tonight. Just a shame the team didn't turn up as well. Overall a very poor performance with little positives to take. The centre halves looked shaky all game with few of the new signings impressing (Hussey the best?).
Early days yet and it's just one game but we still lack creativity and there was little evidence of the pressing game Wilder favours. Given time and a couple more additions I hope we might start to have what it takes but those that won't normally be first choice just don't seem good enough.
Not the end of the world by any means but another performance like that at Grimsby and the pre season optimism will be fading fast. Plenty to learn from and still expect Wilder to get us going. Patience is the key

Where would you say we needed strengthening? Didn't go tonight so intrigued to know where we were lacking. I know you mention Clarke in your post so that's one.

Now where have I heard that before..:( Credit to the blades who backed us, we really do deserve some success, best fans in the country without a doubt.

Really? A sizeable section are amongst the very worst. Very few fans turn against their own team as quickly and frequently as ours.

Sorry to upset Bladey Blades, but it's the uncomfortable truth.

Yep true. But turning up in the numbers we do deserves respect.

Some were at it tonight ,Billy sharp got a 'put some effort in you wanker' which he will have heard and Mcnulty also got some despite being our best forward on the night. Some obviously thought it was a champions league game ,not a chance to look at players and will have been baffled by the 20 odd substitutions.
low points were Reed and Wallace
good points Fleck and Basham ,and McNulty looked like he might have a part to play. Brooks also showed a lot of hunger when he came on.
Quick mention for the ref ,she did really well ,I reckon its the first time our first team have been reffed by a female.

Too an extent I would agree with you. However after being a premier league team 10 years ago we haven't half put up with some utter rubbish sincerest we continue to turn up in huge numbers. I read in a national paper in the last week how brilliant Newcastle fans were after buying 33,000 season tickets. Yes, the same fans that turned on Ashley and the team last 2 seasons. Same goes for Villa fans. Would Newcastle still be getting the same number of fans in 6 years time if they weren't promoted? Personally I doubt it

Depressing to hear. :(

Only a pre season friendly but illustrates the work Wilder has to do. He's got to integrate a lot of new signings and also impose a new playing style on the ones from last seasons.

It's gonna take time but that's one commodity in very short supply at the Lane. If Adams goes and the fee isn't reinvested on new players not frees the atmosphere will again be toxic if we make a poor start. The first few games are going to be crucial to our season

Little sense over-reflecting given about 3 different teams played. Maybe the hair, but mcnulty stood out - looked comfortable and composed. had the ball fallen more kindly he'd have had a few good chances. What I will say in more general terms is we created very few chances overall and looked our ever familiar frail selves at the back. Their forward line (albeit including the BFG) was physical but limited and caused us headaches. Still yet to see real leadership and if up against it fear we'll comfortably be second besters.

We still don't have a dominating centre back or a dominating central midfielder and our centre forwards are midgets. Despite Wilders signings our spine is still our weakness .

We are supposed to be looking for another centre half, the worry is that if either Wilson or O'Connell paired together struggle to contain Halifax then we are in trouble unless we sign the one dominant and experienced player. And neither of these two should be coming to United to sit on the bench.
Ideally you want a settled pair at the back, so if we do get another in one of them will be on the bench.

Early days still, and yes it was a pre season game but I would like to see us restricting non league teams to "nil". The creative stuff will improve as players learn each other's style of play and begin communicating better.

But I won't take too much from the result, it was warm and our first real competitive game after coming back from Spain. Nobody would have been flying into the tackles and it's more about fitness and getting miles in the legs. Plus of course Wilder will be finding his little partnerships and what works formation wise.

I still don't see us going 4-4-2 in the long run, I just don't think we have the players. You need genuine wingers with Pace who can beat a man, central midfielders who can do everything and a front two who complement each other. Our forwards are too similar for me, and we don't have the midfield needed in the middle or out wide.

4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-1-2 is how we will go I expect, though if I could choose I always like 3-5-2. But Wilders comments and signings mean it looks very dificult to get all the players he has mentioned as liking into the starting line up.
Sharp is skipper....so a shoe in starter but he obviously likes Done....but won't start them two together up front. Scougs has been well liked, Coutts mentioned as a surprise to him, Hussey surely is a starter as well as Fleck. At the moment we have Che...and he's talking about wanting a target man up front.
I wouldn't like to try and predict the starting line up for Bolton! Probably the only two places tied up are the full back slots!
