I got given a programme from 1968 Hull city away ,and our left back was a player called mick Harmston . does anybody know anything about this player?

I always knew him as Harmeston.

Nearest clue I can give is that K.Wallace reminds me of him though Wallace is 6 foot tall and Harmeston was shorter, about 5'9".

Good player, good left foot.

I'll go and read my shirt to check the spelling!!

Went to Southend. Not sure he played much there. Overall I don't think he "made" it.

Arthur Rowley picked him at left back for 5 league games in the 1968-69 season (you can see him in his debut if you search for Sheffield United v Oxford in 1968 on you tube) but since then he didnt play for the first team again and in 1970/71 he went on loan to Southend where he played in only 1 league match. You can see him on far right top row in the below photo

Wow! Look men that look like they wont nesh much. Hemsley, Badger and indeed Harmeston look like they could deal with most prison teams let alone LeagueOne...

I think proper stripes and black shirts add to the don't fuck with me look...

Against this lot Scougall would look like the ball boy and as for McNulty's dyed hair..,can you imagine the dressing room comments?

Yes, the world moves on , but some things from the olden days should be retained....

Great players in a great team no doubt.

I'm not sure that they would be able to pour scorn on anyone for their hairstyle though:- ;)

Sheffield lad wasn't he Silent? Think he left football to go into a Sales career.

I'm pretty sure that Mick Harmston went to St Paul's RC School on Granville Road before joining United. I was there myself between 1969 and 1971.

I thought he was quite a decent player, better than Mick Heaton who was around at the same time, but it was Heaton who played more games for us than Harmston.

I've played against Harmston's son in over-40s games once or twice in recent years.

Black boots..

Oh to see our lads in black boots rather than these multicoloured, dayglo, zipped, ankle high, side tied, swoosh branded pixie style, Torvill and Dean wearing 'boots'.

Bring em back. Set the tone lads, set the tone...

Nice bloke Mick was, heused to manage Brunsmeer in the 80's and assistant at Frecheville

As many have alluded to, Mick is still alive and well and living in Sheffield. He did indeed attend St Paul's in Granville Rd and played for Sheffield Boys around 1966 I believe. He was a tall rather unskilled defender and a lot of local judges on the Wybourn estate where Mick lived were surprised when he was offered an apprenticeship and then pro terms with United. Many better ' footballers' than Mick locally, but that's not the defining criteria as we all know ( or at least some of us do ☺).
After his release from United he followed Arthur Rowley to Southend but didn't stay in the pro game too long afterwards.
Scouts for Burnley these days I believe after following Dave Jones around the clubs he managed for several years.
See him about occasionally and always have a chat, a thoroughly nice fellah too.

you mean, Nailed in

.... young Un

The studs which were nail in ( 3 nails ) were originally made of cork . These then became leather and plastic . The plastic being screwed in . Adidas had a problem that the metal thread fixed as part of the boot , would finish up in the boot itself causing it to rub on the underside of the wearers foot .
