I got battered at Pompey that day,Jan.81....portsmouth the scariest place ive ever been division 3 the season we went down it wasnt a kicking but got chased back to the coach i was only 15 SHIT MYSELF also got a bashing round the ear at bolton the day edwards scored and got kicked in the head just come out of the train station and blades fans were just hitting any one
Bert could give you a long list of punch ups, stabbings, bottles and darts thrown, coach windows smashed etc he saw in the 70's at away games but the red wine incident at Wembley was by far the most serious.
Same here but 3 standouts ,Norhampton ,wrong time wrong place after a night match ,had about 10 on top of the car as we drove off. Chester - full scale punch up in the city centre ,ended with my car windscreen getting put through as we were ran out of town ,about 10 onto 1. Carlisle , shot at ,one my mates got hit on the leg with an pellet from an air rifle.Loads of stuff from the 70s / 80s too numerous to mention as has been said previously
This ones making me chuckle , we took a mini van driven by my mates da to this game , all rough and ready 15 , 16 , and 17 year olds , so much went on that day , scaping all over the place , at least 1 of our lads was taken to hospital , mini van got smashed up with us inside it , I tried getting onto a coach load of Chessie fans , Fighting all over the ground , I thought it was manure as they where away at Brighton that day , wouldn't mind but Stockport shit themselves when they had to come back to the lane for replay .Stockport away in cup Nov 80? Got there early stood outside pub and turned around drowsy to see a big hairy fucker growling at me...wasn't until I got 100 yards up road that I realised I'd took a bit of a whack on back of head...4 stitches. Word was there was a gang of Citeh lads around...
Saw that happing to a city fan , after he'd supposedly stabbed a blade in the arm on the moor , virgin records window if memory serves me right .Too many to mention, single instances and long ago but at least then it was only ever fists n boots, scariest I think will always remember seeing a blade thrown through a plate glass window after a game at Stamford bridge, blood every where, luckily worse than it looked mostly superficial but looked horrendous.
Thankfully not but had a few near misses on the road all-be-it inadvertently.
The main one being a game in the capital where we managed to stumble into a large group of West Ham. No words were exchanged what so ever, they just walked towards us and threw a couple of punches.....Needless to say as a group of about half a dozen against 30 or more, we didn't wait around to exchange many words.
Another very near miss being Stoke away where on the way from the ground, quarter of a house brick glanced my ear lobe on it's way past me. Following it were a group of Stoke lads who wanted to cause a bit of hassle. They picked off a couple of blades which was highly frustrating considering it was a bit of a family away day and some of the lads took children with them.
After the Play-off final against Wolves at Cardiff, a group of Wolves weren't satisfied with merely gaining promotion and ran at us on the bridge. I vaguely remember a bloke swinging at me for nowt and missing before falling to the floor and getting pinned by half a dozen of Heddlu's finest.....Which admittedly was highly satisfying! Shame our old man ended up in a cell in the aftermath and received a 3 year banning order! His fault though for letting his emotions get the better of him.
Also had a couple of near misses up on Merseyside and at Birmingham where again the home fans had a pop for no reason what so ever.
The following Tuesday (still with a massive swollen shiner), we went to Highbury in the car for the FL second leg. We marched back to Finsbury Park with over a 1000 train bound Blades and all the locals kept out of the way. The 5 of us went downstairs to catch a tube and we get jumped by a mob and kicked to the floor. Of course I got a few in the head again just to 'top up' the eye swelling. Our driver was a bit older and a lot harder and didn't get knocked to the floor. He just stood there smacking Arsenal yoof at his leisure and he had a great night out.
Birmingham last match 74-75
Was that Chester at Sealand Road, August Bank holiday weekend 1978?Same here but 3 standouts ,Norhampton ,wrong time wrong place after a night match ,had about 10 on top of the car as we drove off. I went to that game on the train on the Saturday (the day of the game) and returned home the following Wednesday.
I can however confirm that there are some lovely views from the windows of Chester Royal Infirmary![]()
So it was.1979
We got relegated in 1979 and we played at Chester for the first time in our history. I was at the match too. At half time my dad said "Someone at the back just shouted "how are the pigs getting on "". This was the first time I learned about our newish nickname for WendySo it was.
Thanks Silent Blade
I could have sworn it was the year after I got married too.
I do know that I was in big bother because we had coach tickets for Whitby on the Monday and my wife ended up getting her dad to drive to Chester to visit me in the hospital
