He wasn't.

Just as well...believe Preston offered nigh on a million quid for the bloke not so long back...he'd knock Billy's deal into a cocked-hat if he came ;)

The lad is a decent player but I'm not fussed. I would much rather we focuses on other areas current,t as we have much greater needs elsewhere. Our forward line is the one department that I actually think we have some good options in.

A target man type should perhaps be our last signing after we have sorted out other positions. Can't see there being anything in this personally.

Doyle hasn't succeeded at PNE yet. He might be a good buy because PNE aren't exactly the most creative outfit and even Garner barely scored for them at Championship level.

That said, I'd only buy him if we ditched mcnulty. We need physicality up front, not another poacher.

Would be surprised if this is a goer. We need strengthening in other positions as a priority.

As CW said he's being inundated with agents pushing their clients. We all know at this level they use the rumour mill to associated their players with the big bucks big ass team.

Hunker down, CW will do it his way that's for sure, no more big name manager over a barrel being shafted by a journeyman looking for a retirement home and one last payday. Doyle had his chance with us and didn't take it, tough.

Can't wait for the first game of the season!

I don't know whether Doyle is classed as a target man but CW was on RS this morning saying he's after a target man and has spoken to two players thus far

He was crap for the Hibees...then he signed for chesterfield which says it all...awful,player..and oinly 28..blody hell..ran like a 50 yerar old...

Not interested at all. Don't want Hanson, Doyle or Novak. For me there's 2 options that would be much more suitable:.

Jonathan Obika

He's the complete package, he's tall, strong and fast. Wins headers and holds the ball up well at times much like you're traditional target men, but he also has the pace and footwork to carry the ball and beat a man. Just entering his prime at 25 and can hopefully improve on his 11 league goals last year.

My other, preferred choice however would be John Akinde of Barnet, but seeing as I've already banged the drum on numerous other threads, I'll spare you all the campaign speech.

Got to admit obika looks good on that clip, generally players his size are more about power and pace ( Emile heskey) but the lad looks quite mobile. But then higdon looked good based on a tube clip, and we know what happened there.

Difference between him and someone like Higdon is that he's been playing in this league and we've seen him in the flesh. Higdon seemed more like a mail order bride.

I know that the youtube "highlights" can make almost any player look good, but I agree Jon Boy, the lad looks athletic and with a good turn of pace.

I guess what we need is Sunjihai to come on here and tell us who the two tall strikers are that Mister Wilder is talking to.............

Obika's an interesting one. He has all the tools to be a top striker at this level but hasn't quite got there. A lot of strikers have their first good goalscoring season quite late on though and at 25 it's entirely possible with him. He could easily go and suddenly score 20 next season, just like his partner Ajose did last season. In fact there's a good chance he would've got close to 20 if Ajose wasn't alongside him last season.

On a free transfer it'd be a no brainer, like this time last summer I think - you know he'd at least be a good rotation player with the promise of more. Now he's got a year left on his contract so would cost a bit. Would be affordable though.

He's not the target man Wilder wants though, but he did say he'd like pace up front as well. Maybe we could be interested when Wilder realises Adams has lost his pace, if he doesn't know that already. Another plus with Obika is that he's left footed and can play out wide. In fact if you told me we'll sell Adams and replace him with Obika, I'd take it.

Obika looks useful on the Tooob. Strong, left footed and quickish. Can hold it up with an eye for goal but, doesn't look an out and out centre forward. Still, do we really need an out and out centre forward? Thimk so for me.

UTB

I'd like a target man and a pace man but it's probably a luxury we'll have to do without.

Hanson and Obika would be good to rotate with Sharp. I'd be happy to sell Adams.

Didnt Doyle score shitloads of goals at Ches ? Remember us being linked with him a couple of January's ago, but then again we're pretty much linked with every striker in't lower leagues. Seemed to 'disappear' after he signed for Cardiff.

Obika is under contract still for a year so he would command a fee. Can't see him coming to be honest and neither Doyle for a similar reason. Wilder has said he's looking at youngsters on loan from the Prem and players at our level or below. So Obika, although at our level will probably be too expensive for us, based on the budget talks. I thought Novak might be a goer, but it seems not.

If we can afford Ricky Holmes or Adam Smith then we could afford Obika. I don't think he'd cost much more than 250k now.

Why oh why would we want a money grubbing failed striker like Doyle when we've got Adams, Mcnullty and DCL as back up. We need a big target man to replace target men (tongue in cheek) Sammon and Hippo.

But if CW wants him it must be reight decision and I'll role with it.

Just hope our new budget constraints aren't that tight we end up missing the necessary players to succeed.

I don't we can afford, Smith, Obika and Holmes though. I'm yet to be convinced that we'll sign Holmes and Smith anyway to be honest. Smith is young and really highly rated, they probably want at least £300,000 wouldn't you say plus Holmes fee, which'll be similar I would guess.
