Did you not care that we were paying Sammon and Hammond a reputed weekly salary between them amounting to around £30k per week I know I did
Third Division clubs shouldnt be forking out anything like £8k a week for a player who is from the 4th division and is unproven in this League its sheer madness, thats why football is in the mess its in
i don't care because we never even talked to him

Why did you care? It's not your money and if we spend 50% less than we did last season, you won't get another discount on your ST.
I'm less bothered about how much this is costing our owners and more concerned about getting good players in, to get us promoted.

Football isn't in a mess, it's more popular than it ever has been in my lifetime.

We did talk to Hammond and Sammon though that was the point and it was £1.5 m spunked up the wall

We have a budget or dont you live in the real world we can get better value than a guy with a flashy name thats never played above the 4th division we could get 2 x CBs for that and spend more on the creative players

You say football isnt in a mess try asking Bolton fans their club is in a big mess
Name me 10 clubs outside the PL (those that dont have parachute payments) that made a profit last season

I guess there are not ten including the Premier League. Football is and always has been a loss-making activity for the vast majority. It's rather amusing in a bewildering sort of way when people suggest our chairman has somehow made money out of United when the truth is enormously to the contrary....

What we pay the player (reportedly) doesnt concern me. Pay them 2k or 20k per week but i expect them as a team to perform week in week out. Why? Because this is a job we would all do for free. Because its a dream for us. But what they get paid isn't their fault.

If we pay them less then by definition you are saying we lower expectation? I expect the same no matter the fee or the salary. If we are mad enough to overpay then more fool us.

If we get promoted then what we pay players is a drop in the ocean compared to the value of promotion.

when players rock up here and the first question is how much will you pay me its a sign they are not for us , anyone breaking his neck to play in front of 20 k in league would ask if hes going to play reguarly first , not working out what car they can afford

Fair point. Football at our level is in a mess. Is this the fault of players demanding massive wages or idiot owners paying them it? We pay what we pay, I don't need to know and in actual fact I don't, I just know what people on here say and I dont believe 90 percent of that.

I care about the quality of what we bring in and will it get us promoted, not what it cost.

Don't agree. The first question they should be asking is when do we start. Money should come behind the ambition to do well. After all if you do well you get rewarded right?

which is what I said , ambition, they must have the ambition to play infront of 20k and if we do well 25000 , not settle for 7000 at peterborough and 7250 if they are doing well
Having 3 times as many people adore you is ambition, the fdinancial rewards come with that, not before it

Im not saying we lower the quality of players coming in we shouldnt have to pay a reported £8k a week to a player that has never played higher than the the 4th division. Dont you see that
I would pay £8k a week to a proven Championship player like Baptiste that is not a washed up player looking for a last pay day

You say you dont care what we pay as long as we get promoted but someone has to comply with a budget set by the owners there are also FFP rules.
If football were all so simple assemble a squad doesnt matter how much it costs as long as we get promotion
Promotion can never be guaranteed no matter how much you spend
Football is not an exact science you can spend loads of money on players have the biggest budget in the League by far and still not achieve success and then you have players on large contracts that have failed that you have to pay no matter what and the financial state of your club puts its future at risk
By your reasoning we should go and sign Messi Neymar and Suarez fuck the expense
That might still not get us promoted as Suarez gets banned for life for biting someones ear off and Neymar and Messi get jailed for tax avoidance

Wow I either failed to get my point across or you missed it. We have a budget yes, we work within that yes. Do I care how they do that, no.

Thought you were advocating spending loads a money and not giving a fuck how much ;)
I would agree with you to a certain extent but I wouldnt want to pay the alleged player the alleged amount when I think we could get better value for money elsewhere also got to save some of our budget for January like we did this year

Dunno how accurate this is (or, indeed, if it's complete bollox or not), but interesting all the same.

Purportedly the wages of the Wigan players two seasons back, the season they came down from the Championship to Division Three.

Interestingly, their highest paid player was the loanee Harold Maguire - on just a touch under £34,000 a week (presumably Hull's wage to him, which Wigan were paying in full).

The vast wages didn't stop Wigan going down. Same way that they didn't prevent us wallowing in the Third Division.

Do Moneybags Peterborough know what they're doing? ;)

First paragraph. I'm aware we have a budget, I live in the real world; I work for a living and I pay bills. The budget is set by the two owners and is determined by how much they are prepared to invest (gamble). If they choose to invest less this season because they're tired of losing money, that's up to them but I'm not going to rejoice about it.

Second paragraph. I genuinely couldn't give a shit about Bolton. They are in a mess because of very poor governance. The point about making a profit is a red herring. The majority of championship/PL owners do not go into football to make money, they do so because owning a club is a status symbol for the super rich, like owning a yacht or a racehorse. That's what is happening in the 'real world'.

No wonder H couldn't wait to fuck off.

The simple facts are that there is a correlation between money spent and success. Nothing in life is guaranteed and there will always be exceptions (such as Leicester pissing the league while Chelsea and Man U failed to even make the champions league) but the reality is, the less we spend, the harder it will be to go up.

You see those wages and you think on the one hand, well, how can we ever compete?; and, on the other, can't blame you at all for seeking those fertile new pastures, Harry.

£34k a bloody week??!

In saying that, it's not just the amount spent (as evidenced by Wigan in this case), it's very much how wisely you spend the money you've got too. And tbh Wigan spent and managed very wisely last season.

They did, whereas we spend money like Viv Nicholson on crack.

All this talk of Tafazolli is making me wish I had the slightest knowledge who the fuck Tafazolli was before I opened this thread.
He's an ex Southampton player who went to Mansfield. As he was at saints at the same time as Adkins he was then linked with us, being a centre half (if you can remember what they are) and considered affordable.

Because Wilder was once linked with him, it is assumed that he still is and would want to sign him.

The rest is speculation.

For all the "Not guaranteed Success with higher wages Bollox" that people talk about, clubs that pay better wages sign and keep better players and so have more continuity and more success.
Some signings might not work but the methods of successful clubs remain the same, pay good wages and get good players. Eventually you'll have a bit of success.

Dress it up however you like but there is a reason why we only ever see a good player very occasionally.
1) He usually belongs to somebody else and we've got him on loan, and he goes back to his parent club, OR.......
2) We find a rough diamond from the academy who stays with us five minutes until it's time to negotiate a decent contract for grown ups.

We never go out and get a really good quality prospect on the way up and keep him long enough for him to sign a second contract

Any decent player gets stumbled upon by accident, there's no plan of action to bring quality players in, it just happens by accident, somebody turns out to be better than expected. And then almost as quickly as he's arrived on the scene it's panic selling before his existing shit contract expires and we lose him for nothing.

Thanks for the information.

I can't believe we offered 25k per week for this player and he turned us down to sign for Peterborough for 43k per week.

Wilson Out.

Mansfield offered him £50k plus his own personal concubine.
