Long's new deal 'almost wrapped up'

The player's agent will dictate the pace of the negotiations but the manager can have the club withdraw the offer if he so wishes, with the agreement of the technical committee of course!
 
Not 100% sure of the rules but I believe that the club won't withdraw the offer of a contract.

At present if he does leave we can claim compensation from the club he signs for which will be based on his development with us and the contract we offered.
I presume if we didn't offer any contract then the compensation might be negligible or not apply at all.

Given his appearance record we actually might be due a half decent amount, certainly more than if he'd hardly played.

And certainly more than he is worth.
 
I am confident that George will make a quality keeper eventually but perhaps not quick enough for United's promotion ambitions this year. I would recommend that we go for either Bury's or Northampton's keeper and put the fee from George's transfer towards the purchase.
Bury's keeper ( I can't remember his name) had great games against us last season home and away.
Aaron Ramsay should go out on loan to gain experience and hopefully take over as number 1.

Just don't think Wenger will go for that. Wilshere is too injury prone and they need the cover. Not to mention that the odds on Ramsay making a decent keeper even at league 1 level must be prett poor.

I'm sure they can; mate of mine withdrew a contract offer to a player who had declined it initially because he thought he was worth more.

When he came back after looking for a deal elsewhere to sign it he was offered only 50% of the first deal.

Three years ago so things might have changed?

Give over mate. You can do better than that. As I'm sure you are well aware he hasn't made a single start for Barnsley in Division Three and won't be featuring any time soon in the Championship. He's on his way to the Conference like all the Bladey Boyband favourites.

As for international, well....

I not saying they can't, of course they can, I'm saying they won't.

In fact if they are certain he's leaving they could offer a vastly improved contract in order to use that as leverage for the compensation.
Look, he's our first choice keeper, has played over 100 games and we offered him this excellent contract...

Yeah I was just being mischievous to be honest based on technicalities.

Although I do like the look of young Ottis and was sorry to see him go. He's the sort of player I think we should be having as back up rather than the likes of a Ben Davies, Martyn Woolford etc. who would be on significantly more money and won't get any better. I think he has a chance of making it in the game in the lower leagues.

I don't imagine he'll be signing this contract to be anything other than first choice next season, given that he could go and be back up for a Premier League team.

If he left we would get compensation for him to add to the budget and we'd be forced to sign a new first choice keeper - ideally the experienced, dominant and reliable keeper many of us would like to see.

As it is we're likely to see another keeper brought in to be back up to Long, and then there's Ramsdale too, who has to be factored into any decisions regarding the goalkeepers. It's important that it's managed correctly.

I don't think they will be room for barter with Wilder leading the deal , it will be more like , that's the offer , take it or leave it . It's up to you George.

If he goes he goes , good luck to him , if he stays he stays , again good luck to him.

Was the player under 24?

With Long, we can only get compensation for him if we offer him a contract. If the rumours of other clubs being interested have any substance then we'd be daft to release him as we'd get nothing for him.

What I suspect Wilder will do, if Long keeps fucking around, is start negotiations with other keepers and wait for West Brom or whoever to make us an offer (as often clubs just do a deal rather than go to a tribunal to have the compensation valued).

It wasn't an unreasonable assumption at the time but it seems Ken Bates was right; keepers don't make good managers.
We didn't realise we were going to get a pseudo-intellectual mentalist who you can imagine singing 'I'm looking at the man in the mirror, I'm hoping he can change his ways' as he shaves on a matchday morning, quoting David Brentisms at us as we crash to another defeat at a club that has a tin shed for a stand and sells burgers from a caravan.

I can name, in one, a keeper who was a complete and utter twat. In fact 23000 of us can.
 
Jak Alnwick from Port Vale was impressive for a young lad.
