CW "A Few Surprises in the Retained List"

I'm fucking livid.

Not seen the list, no idea what surprises might be involved (could be he's drawn a picture of BDTBL in crayon), no idea at all what he might want to do with the squad etc. etc.
Doesn't stop me being livid though.

I'm a bit busy. Can you be livid on my behalf?

I think he should be given a chance... however "out and out goalscorer... 12 in 32 in league 2... and one was 3 game (so 9 in 31... almost Chris Porter Career level rate)

So what you're saying is that we should bring Porter back?

Has another year I think so not part of the retained list.

Off the top.of me head:

Long
McEverley
Flynn
Harris
Howard
Baxter
Flo
Maybe McGahey?

Plus Kennedy and McFadzean who had already been told they were gone under Adkins. Then there’s James Wallace. Some talk of an option of a 3rd year but surely won’t be taken up.

The retained list may be a huge clue to the transfer budget (if any) he has - I wouldn't be surprised in the least if there are a lot of retentions. How would he know who to get rid of anyway - he's not even taken his coat off - so I can feel a clean slate time again coming. Any pretence of us having resources of any significance available to finance a promotion winning squad seems to be disappearing fast given the money is tight references at the press conference. Don't feel much like celebrating this appointment and the news coming with it. Sorry, but that's just how I feel. I wish the guy luck but can't help thinking better men than him have tried and failed. We are a joke.

Yup. Prepare for another long, shit season.

Brayford. Sharp. Long. Adams. Possibly Done. Possibly JMac as cover. Whiteman and the most promising kids. Everyone else should be surplus to requirements imo.

I'm hoping he's going to add a superfluous "e" onto the end of everyone's surname to build bridges with the disenfranchised part of our fan base - following this up by getting the "H" put back into the Bramall Lane road signs.

Can someone conclusively tell me who is out of contract?

Sorry if it's been mentioned earlier in this thread but I'm enjoying a beer in the sun and there's no way I'm scanning back through 5 pages.

Let's be fair, if there's a few retained, we can hardly be surprised. I appreciated most were happy with Adkins being sacked but surely you all know that this would be an inevitable side-effect? Virtually The ONLY reason I wanted to keep Adkins was that I knew, at the very least he would allow all contracts to expire as they were the players that would have (nearly) cost him his job.

Wilder doesn't know these players. He doesn't know who is worth keeping and who to get rid of, why would he? So he keeps a few (based on nothing really because he won't even get a pre-season before making his mind up. We then can't afford new players and the cycle begins again. I wasn't pleased with Adkins either but the fact remains this was always going to happen with a new manager.

There lies the problem. Nobody gets the time to build anything, because the Board fucks the manager off on a yearly basis. Managers have to work with the previous guy's signings, brings in a couple of his own. then gets sacked. The cycle continues, and, the club stagnates. Regardless of your position next year. I think Wilder needs the 3 years to sort you out

Ignoring players we don't own, the following.

Goalkeepers:
Mark Howard
George Long
George Willis

Defenders:
Bob Harris
Terry Kennedy – one year option to extend
Jay McEveley
Harrison McGahey - one year option to extend

Midfielders:
Jose Baxter
Jamal Campbell-Ryce
Florent Cuvelier
Ryan Flynn - one year option to extend
Callum McFadzean
James Wallace - one year option to extend

Strikers:
None out of contract

Let's be right.

Nobody "knows" these players.
Even the manager.
If Adkins had known, he'd still be in a job and we wouldn't have finished 11th.

Were we signing Hammond on the basis he was a good bloke to have around in the changing room and training pitch?
An Adkins signing, look at his drama queen performance last Sunday.

18000+ Blades I would like to think, would say that's not what we pay our hard earned for.

If Callum MacFadz gets another contract I'd strongly suspect Kyle is on his way from MKD.

That would be utterly ridiculous. I'm encouraged by what Wilder said today on not being held to ransom by players – we have less of a budget this season and can't be simply retaining players because someone else wants them here. McFadzean's release should be one of the easiest to decide on – he has shown nothing since that initial burst onto the scene during Wilson/Morgan's tenure. We need to move him on.

Don't disagree with that.

Wilder's preferred formation :-

2 - 1 - 8

Goalie-Wag

no room for that any more in the modern game sadly, it's all goalie-stick these days, although Warnock managed a hybrid version of this strategy called goalie-Jags ;)

Interesting to see Peterborough have released several players today, despite them being managerless. They do have a DoF though, in Barry Fry.

So that's Peterboro, Vale, Southend, Oldham, Scunny, Blackpool, Cov, Gills, Rochdale, Bury, Chessy who've all notified of the players they're releasing. Discounting the relegated & promoted sides, & those competing in the playoffs, that leaves just Swindon, Fleetwood, Shrewsbury & us yet to announce, I think.

Not complaining, in that we've had other priorities. Even so, hopefully Chris will be speedy & decisive (i.e. fuck clean slates).

Hasn't Adkins already done the retained list? If so, surely that's that and there's no going back.

We really should have a boardroom knowledgeable and competent enough to ensure certain players aren't given new deals.

I would be very surprised though if Wilder does anything that will be unpopular with the fans.

Wilders RS interview suggests not. He says it is yet to be finalised and that there may be surprises both in players we thought might be going, staying, and players we thought might be staying, going.

Also says he's working on it with the "technical board".

The current team/squad would play much better with a dominant centre half, effective target man and a midfield player who can get stuck in, three leaders straight down the spine of the team. Wilder to get all 'um motivated and the three leaders down the spine of the team making sure it doesn't let up during the duration of the game.

christ.

"Retained list will have some surprises."

Does this sound strangely like "We have to give the players a chance"?

So begins the next chapter of 'fuck the fans off with another managerial appointment we promised the fucking world to and will sack in 12 months.'

I cannot wait for the next iteration of 'Fit and Proper'.
