I'm not criticising Warnock or Bassett at all. They have been the 2 most successful managers in my lifetime. My point was that they were successful because they were given time to be. That's what clubs need to do when they hire a decent manager. The 12 month turnover means it could be a very long time before we can look back on another manager as a success.

Think we're in agreement then. However long Wilder lasts I just want this appointment to finally be the start of some consistency in policy.

Things are even harder now in the backroom staff without Morgan. At least while he was here there was someone on the coaching staff with long term experience and knowledge of the club at every level. Even more than Adkins, Wilder's got to build up from scratch.

CW "funnily enough Nigel Adkins was actually my mentor during the media relations component of my latest FA Coaching Badge"

At least he won't be as badly hamstrung as Adkins as the squad is now much smaller with the opportunity to release plenty more. Recknon there's only going to be 5 left on the books that most fans would want to shift on (Scougall, McNulty, Freeman, Woolford & Coutts).

I don't remember a Summer where I thought the more players we released the more excited I'd be.

So because Adkins failed, with certain mitigating factors, that means the board should go a different direction entirely with the new manager?

Because that's my point, really. That they had criteria for the last selection and now they've gone with someone who didn't fit that mould at all. Wilder gets a chance from me like anyone who joins the club would, but his appointment is still a clear sign that the board remains confused as to what it actually wants and is still appointing managers arbitrarily in hope that they get lucky. I hope they do, I'd just prefer judgement over luck.

I DONT AGREE

The board saw a squad last year that finished 5th and in the play off and hioped with his cv Adkins could take us that extra step , if we finished in the play off again and lost , I believe hed still be here, but in every aspect he failed, ,
we lost too many at home , clubs came here thinking they could win and did so with consummate ease at times
ad there been a glimpse of better times ahead, a system we could see being formed , a way ahead we could identify as being on the horizon
Adkins would have got more time

Sadly none of these criteria have even started to look viable

mitigating circumstances, all managers take over with mitigating circumstances as does Wilder
Wigan had obstacles to overcome
Barnsley had huge obstacles to overcome in december both with new managers
both got there
we slumped to 11th, Adkins failed to get the fans involved throughout , no one got remotely excited

Wilder had huge mitigating circumstances to overcome at Northampton, and made it work

One thing I do hope he isn't doing, is presuming to have a go at the same here. Because with this club, we all know which way that would probably go.

hes not stupid , he knows who he can push and how far
believe its probably our best appointment since Bassett as I dont think he will take as long as Warnock did to get it up and running , mainly because he wont get the time
circumstances dictate he has to be good and fast
McCabe was lucky to get Warnock right, believe hes got lucky again , and theyve acted with haste to get him as his stock was up , for good reason

I'm not sure what your disagreement is.

I'm not defending Adkins here (though I do think he's a little hard done by). Much more I'm questioning the direction of the board. I'll just agree with you for sake of argument that sacking Adkins was definitely the right decision. That doesn't mean that the selection criteria that the board announced when they started searching for Adkins also needs to be completely thrown out. Wilder is just an indication that they still don't know what they want.

We're allowed to have some sense of continuity from the boardroom even when changing staff.

My concern is that when Wilder doesn't release the entire squad, fans will make the assumption that Adkins most certainly would have. He wouldn't. I can't imagine any manager would intentionally have only half a dozen contracted players at any point in time.

they cant win , they took several weeks appointing Adkins they got charged with being bumblingly slow and without a clue
at least theyve acted swiftly and appear to have a sense of direction in that case
the selection criteria was get a manager whos in the zone just now, which Chris is

They could win. They could come up with a policy for managerial selections and stick with it instead of changing the remit every season and wondering why the club isn't making progress.

what policy would that be Peter
what is the undeniable formula to get in a winning manager
in your own words
if it works you could make a fortune

Erm...there's lot of possible criteria. Style, previous achievements, experience, focus on youth development, willingness to work within a budget, etc.

The important part is to have that selection criteria be at least somewhat consistent so that progress is made rather than starting from square one every season.

Mark it on the calendar, I agree and like a BTL post. ;)
