Some interesting stuff on age (as you'd imagine, the giffers love it, us youths not so much). The old folk support them, and strongly. The younger generations support is lower along with the strength of feeling.

Here's a thought, you can be happy to sing God Save the Queen (not the Sex Pistols version) maybe without thinking much about it as it's been the norm for pretty much everyone's lifetime but...singing God Save the King is going to take a bit more effort.

You don't need to replace anything. The simple history of monarchy is they have & will continue to have less power. They literally used to reign, what they said went. That's absurd to the modern monarchy. Just let them drift into a self funded tourist attraction.

The problem for me is that they're not a tourist attraction for anywhere in the North of England, or most other places around Britain. In fact the opposite- they drain tourists away from genuinely beautiful parts of Cornwall, Peak District, Lake District, the Highlands etc. And having travelled a fair amount, so many of the people I've met have only been to London, to Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London etc.

It's really good that we're topping up the purse of a family that already gets paid from The Duchy [you haven't counted that conveniently] and that unlike the rest of us, Charles won't be paying any inheritance tax. They make a massive public loss and you're happy with that. I can't argue with the economics of someone who wishes we made more of a public loss for the sake of lining the elite's pockets with more money. That's up to you if you feel that's right.

Don't know how old your Dad is but I'm in my 60s and only remember the anthem being played at the end (Until about 1972/73) and no-one stood everyone just made for the exit.
