I think I saw that team play a 0 0 v a Newcastle team featuring Gazza. Was a cup game of some sort. Did gazza play or is my memory playing tricks?
 



Blades 2 -1 Leicester - FULL TIME.

Schlupp got one back one 93 mins, but the Blades go through to the Semi's and a clash with Villa.

Steve Conroy played over 100 games for us in goal and it was a surprise when Harry Haslam decided that Conroy replaced Jim Brown for the 1978-79 season. He was in the reserves when we signed Keith Waugh before moving to Rotherham and Rochdale.

Gary France played two 1st team games for us in 1974 and I dont know where he went to afterwards

Nigel Williams was supposed to be the one for the future as he was clever and tricky winger but he had off field problems which was his downfall. About 10 years ago he went to court for cruelty to dogs

I was at that Old Trafford game and remember Faulkner, starting as he meant to go on. In fact, as he was playing in the first team in 1973, that's why I thought he must have been too old for the youth team that year.
 
Going off on a tangent but I actually saw one of Gazza's first ever games as a kid for the Newcastle first team around 87 I think? We were on holiday in Great Yarmouth and went to watch them at Norwich. It was also one of Mirandinha's first games (the Brazillian they signed). I do recall gazza being overweight to say the least but looked a real talent even then. What astounded me that night was the fervent support of the Gerodies. They filled 2 whole stands and were incredible in their backing for the side. I was only 8 or 9 but it really stuck with me and have seen it since when they have come to the Lane what superb support they have (considering they have done relatively sod all in their history compared to other similarly supported clubs).

Two goals from Sheffield United skipper Elliott Whitehouse ended City's brave run in the FA Youth Cup as the razor-sharp Blades advanced to the last four.

Whitehouse struck twice in the first half, his second from the penalty spot after Foxes skipper Liam Moore had brought down the impressive Jordan Slew, to book United a semi-final clash with Aston Villa.

Superbly organised in defence, energetic in midfield and imaginative in the final third, the visitors were good value for their win and were only breached by Jeff Schlupp's consolation in the final minute of stoppage time.

I was at Frecheville School with Steve Faulkner...........He was a wednesdayite, also there in the year above me and Steve was Roger Wylde, who played for wednesday, he was a Blade, he's physio at Stockport now.

United dominated the whole of the first half with a mobility and passing range that shames their seniors.
In the second half Leicester pressed more and we saw a different side to the the Academy as they battled away to protect the lead and used breakaway tactics which meant that Leicester could never feel safe at the back.
Yes you would have been pleased with their composure on the ball in the first half and the way they dug in and were rarely threatened in the second half.
The late goal adds a lopsided look to the game which belied our superiority.
McGuire, Kennedy, Harriot and Whitehouse looked very good and Slew had the best game for him that I have seen him play.

Did Micky and Dave walk away with bemused expressions and shaking their heads? Not exactly a joined-up club at the moment are we? Let's hope Pembo's philosophy ultimately prevails.

Silent, to fill in your gaps - Les Allen was right back, Kevin Hicken at no.6 and Colin Pymm was sub.

I watched and played against most of those lads a few times and was sure a few of them would make the grade. Lea Brooks was the pick of the bunch in my experience and he went on to do bugger all. A real fine line between making it and the scrap heap...

Don't know if it's been mentioned already on this thread, or on another thread, but there was a decent article in Tuesday night's programme with Pembo. He was certainly banging the drum for playing the game in the 'right' way. It makes the non-appointment of O'Driscoll an even poorer decision. United could have had a system in place that would have seen a logical progression from the youth teams to first team for players that were good enough, playing a purely passing game.

Cheers LSF. Out of these you knew (apart from S Conroy, Ludlam and Faulkner), where did they go to after leaving the Blades? A former workmate (Charlie Bell- not the same one that went to Chesterfield) was in SUFC's books around that time time remembers that while all the youth players were drinking Cola or other soft drinks, Nigel Williams would be knocking back the pints! He said Nigel had the talent to go onto great things for the 1st team

No it doesn't. SoD whilst he's a good manager at this level, never proved himself at bringing youngsters through. A passing game is fine but a winning game is better

Yes, that's the problem that I can't solve.
Just how do you mix oil and water.
I have never heard Adams talk about the beautiful game. O'Driscoll or similar would have been the conduit, that's for sure.

The problem for you and others Swiss, is that you really don't like football. You choose to ignore that successful teams at all levels, in modem football, pass and move as opposed to you preferred option of kick and rush. Sadly Quickfix Micky and Dinosaur Dave are as Neanderthal as you are.

The real myth is the ludicrous notion that passing football is inimical with winning football. Have a look at the top of our destination for next season. The teams at the top of League One play proper football and would outplay our honest commited plodders with ease.

I'm sure you would wish to congratulate the only successful part of our club would you not?

Silent, to my knowledge - Kevin Hicken knocked around in local football after United released him. Martin Conroy, a Scots lad stayed in Sheffield after his release and worked for Midland Bank (HSBC) and also played for them in the Hatchard & County Senior leagues, along with his brother Jimmy who also failed to make the grade at Bramall Lane.
Brent Marsh became a fireman after his release and also played locally for several teams. Gary France, who I believe made an appearance as sub for the 1st team, didn't so anything professionally after United and I played against him a few times in the local leagues. Peter Ward & Les Allen were Don & Dearne lads and appeared for Mexborough Town & Denaby United semi professionally, again our paths crossed on a few occasions. Lea Brookes, I haven't a clue where he went but not anywhere in the pro game i think? he looked such a good lad at 17, a defender in the Kenworthy mould, tough, read the game well, tackled cleanly and distributed well. Something just didn't develop and he was lost to the game after that.
Nigel Williams, as you know he made a first team appearance and I met him on a few occasions as my sister worked for United so i knew several of the players as a result. Nigel was a lovely lad with a troubled background. He, like you alluded to, had a fondness for a drink or two and I saw him on several occasions in the Top Rank Suite on Saturday night absolutely legless and barely able to speak. It was a shame to see him pissing his career up the wall as he could play a bit and had a great left foot (unfortunately his left arm worked far harder when near the bar!). I often wonder what became of him...
 
Cheers LSF. i remember Jimmy Conroy used to catch the bus from Green Lane in Dronfield going towards Chesterfield in the 1980s (he wore glasses). I told him that I recognised him as he played for our reserves in the mid to late 1970s. He said he captained the reserves for a while.

The dates of Villa's FA Youth Cup semi-final games have been announced.

The first leg will be played at Villa Park on March 16 while the decisive return game will be held at Bramall Lane on April 6.

Both games kick-off at 7pm
 
If SUFC put some effort in on this, I can see biggest crowd of the season. Announce all stands open, £5 a ticket in advance £2 concessions or family for £10.

But £1 extra for me and Tuns just to keep Micallijo quiet.

Googled Nigel Williams of Wolves. He was born in Canterbury and the picture of him in sporting heroes doesnt look like the Nigel Williams that played for our Youth and Reseves team. I think the one that played for us was born in Wales
