McDonald Doyle McGinn
Brandy Porter Murphy

Subs:- Howard, McGinty, Higginbotham, Whitehouse, Flynn, McFadzean, Ironside

It’s difficult to see how we can accommodate two central midfield playmakers in a 4-4-2 formation.
Also, our defence was solid enough last season but neither full back is comfortable when going forward.
So I’m going for a 4-3-3 formation with McDonald and McGinn given license to attack and create.

I was thinking about this last night and thought a 4-2-3-1 formation might work quite well:

GK: George Long

RB: Tony McMahon
CB: Neill Collins
CB: Harry Maguire
LB: Matt Hill

CM: Stephen McGinn
CM: Kevin McDonald

RW: Febian Brandy
AMC/SS: Jamie Murphy
LW: Callum McFadzean

ST: Chris Porter

As you said, the full backs won't bomb forward so we'll always have at least 4 back, with either McGinn or McDonald covering the other if one goes forward. I actually think the team looks quite balanced after the signings we've made.

I don't like playing strikers out wide in a 4-4-2, but in this type of formation it's acceptable because they will be genuine wingers as opposed to playing as wide midfielders.

That's how you setup on FM isn't it!!

interesting you both have Porter. I think we need to remember that Miller and Porter played quite well together and I think Porter and Brandy could be similar. I like the idea of getting Muprhy and Brandy around around the striker and I think 3 man midfield would suit Doyle and McDonald

If you have the right players around Porter he can be effective, no matter what some people have in their heads. Him and Miller looked dangerous and we had nobody similar to play alongside him when Miller got hurt. With players who will actually try and get behind the defence and have a bit of pace, he'll create alot of chances.

Fed up with our rigidity and the static cones that played last season. More pace and more forward movement, in as many positions as possible. Too attacking? It's a 4-5-1! :)

I want Murphy up front this season and I don't want us to necessarily have a big man.

So I'd go with the old 4-4-2 and:

McMahon Maguire Collins Hill
Flynn McGinn McDonald McFadzean
Brandy Muprhy
I think McMahon will be much better this season if he stays, and I'd like to replace the left back as I think Hill's legs have gone sadly.

Except Doyle wasn't in that team... ;)

I was thinking that myself, but when I see that lineup I'd hazard a guess that there's only Collins, Maguire and McDonald over 6ft, and McDonald can't head a ball to save his life. We'd be so susceptible at set pieces so I think we do need a bit of height somewhere.

4-3-3 my arse. hate 4-3-3.

on football manager i always go 3-5-2. with a deep lying playmaker DM, swap it for a treqaurtista AM when we need a goal. ive no idea what trequartista means, but i like the sound of it. Works a treat. Sometimes the defence gets torn to shreds by pacy wingers, but its worth it for the domination having 5 midfielders has and the flexibility of being able to have the extra man sitting in front of the defence directing play or behind the front 2 when you need to attack. i won the champions league several times with afc wimbledon with my beloved 3-5-2 formation.

if you guys think Porter will start up top on his own, you're crazy. I can't fault his workrate but he is not good enough to play for us. We'd better get someone else, because I'm not paying to watch him lead the line. He is shocking.

I don't know who itll be or how much theyll cost (free probably), but he wont start up top.

totally agree. the guy tries, but hes hopeless for a team anywhere near the top half of league one.

if we can't find someone better we may as well give up. miller was loads better and he couldn't even get in the crewe team. has to be better options out there within our budget.

If any of the teams cited above score more than 40 goals in a season I will be amazed.

We are desperately weak up front.

It was a bad decision to sign Porter and an even worse one to extend his contract !
Simply not good enough - end of !

Porter is the natural choice as a lone central striker, which is used in a few of the team suggestions. It's either him or Ironside.

Obviously we're hoping to sign someone better, but at the moment we'd be weaker if Porter wasn't available.

We've got to get some rhythm and movement into our attacking play and I urge everybody to count how many players in their team who can actually list forward movement as a decent individual attribute.

We should try to avoid/limit picking the steady eddies, the passengers, and look for players all over the pitch who will actually give us something, on and off the ball, going forward.

Well that's two new full-backs to start with!

Despite all the comments against him on this thread, if we'd had a front 2 of Porter and Miller fit for the whole season, I think we'd have been comfortably promoted. The most natural strike pairing out of all the options tried last season - they seemed to have an understanding that wasn't replicated by any of the other front 2 combinations.

Can I just remind you that we're Sheffield United. We're currently a run of the mill third division club, similar in stature to the likes of Notts County or Oldham.

Very disrespectful to say that we're any better than players like Chris Porter, Matt Hill etc as things stand. If you can't bear that fact then it's probably time to have a few years off until the inevitable swing in fortunes happens in the city.

Porter??????????? the only porter i want to see at BDTBL is the night one at the Copthorne.

PORTER....how can anybody think he is any good? Hoping Weir can see this before end of transfer deadline.

We are very short on strikers. Very unsure about Ironside, before his injury, can't say Miller was doing much to impress, Brandy might be ok but can't see where goals will come from.

I "Nearly" agreed with Bergen's team. Made a couple of adjustments. I'd swap Whitehouse for McDonald. Even Doyle in the hole between defence and midfield would work well.

If he has two ball playing midfielders near him (McD & McG) then he could do well again. Remember when he had McD & Quinn the season before?!?!

This formation will only work if Murphy & Brandy support the lone striker well.
