Academy / Development side

A huge thanks to @goodpinch (twitter handle) for his help in most of this section and as always has helped me a fair bit to fill in the gaps etc. Indeed, a good section (majority!) of below was taken from @goodpinch who gave me lots of details on the competitions, form and players! He gave me all the details on competitions, how the teams fared at each age group and all the player stats (NOTE : THESE WILL BE ADDED ON IN A WEEK AFTER THE U21 SEASON IS COMPLETED SO WILL UPDATE ON THIS THREAD). Fantastic research from good pinch!

The Blades continued to run an Elite Player Performance Plan Category 2 academy in the Premier League’s Professional Development League, for an eleventh season. The senior age category reverted to U21 after six seasons at U23. The younger age category continued at U18. With three academies losing their Category 1 status and no clubs leaving or joining from Category 3, there were 20 clubs split evenly into two regional sections - North and South. Again, the Blades were placed into the North section and played the other nine teams in their section home and away plus the ten teams in the South section once - a total of 28 league games. The two teams finishing highest in each section qualified for the four-team playoffs to determine the national champions. The U21s were invited again to play in the Premier League Cup, a competition mainly for those Category 1 clubs who aren’t playing in UEFA youth competitions but with a number of invited non-Category 1 clubs to make up the numbers. The U18s entered the 71st FA Youth Cup. They were also one of three Category 2 clubs to be invited to play in the Category 1 U18 Premier League Cup. Because of this, they did not enter the Category 2 U18 Professional Development League Cup.

The sides a U21 and u18 level have once again been very successful in what they have done in terms to be playing better teams at this level but can only beat what you are up against and to be top of both age groups is quite an achievement. We have had long unbeaten runs at both levels too. This is all against a backdrop of a number of players going on loan or being involved in the first team. The net effect is the u18’s move up to the U21’s and this makes the results even more incredible. Big credit to the coaches and the players. Yes, it is often seen as about preparing players and trying to find 1st team talent but even at the big clubs not everyone breaks through. If you get one player from a squad/age group to be a regular eventually at first team level then you have done well. We of course have to compete with a number of clubs who have better set ups and facilities.

Overcoming these inferior facilities and not being a Grade 1 Academy is going to be a challenge but as Lester and Geary have pointed out the coaching quality will remain high throughout the levels even if we don’t have the best pitches/changing rooms and gymnasiums/hydrotherapy (we now have a portacabin for this!) etc.

The fact the Academy is Category B when most at this level and some lower is Category A means we are not going to get the top talent and teams like Burnley and Leeds are both now Category A. However, with the reputation of the club’s production and the coaches there present hopefully if we can move into the next level, we can produce top level players again. That has to be way forward. Despite some feeling we have not had as many come through in recent years, we do not realise how well we did to produce Maguire, Walker, Brooks, Calvert Lewin, Ramsdale etc. Jebbison, Gordon, Seriki, Arblaster, Andre Brooks have all played first team games for players that are very young and all came through the ranks even if signed from other academies. I watched us recently play Wednesday at this level and the way the lads’ played football was admirable. There is clearly an ethos to do it the right way. The Owls players looked bigger and stronger and maybe older but the fact is we are more about producing the right assets required in terms of how they play is great to see. The emphasis is placed on skill, expressing yourself and passing the ball but the fact the age groups do this and still win is fascinating really. There are clearly things working well but it is just frustrating we cannot make that next step in terms of level they play at and the facilities. This would help us attract even more talent.

Derek Geary ran the u18’s for a few years and then when Lester was elevated to the first team was named head of the academy operations and now the under 18’s are run by Paul Quinn who was appointed before this season. He was manager at Brighouse and Tadcaster Albion before running the under 14’s at the academy and has worked his way up.

At the U21 level since Heckingbottom has moved on, United named Michael Collins as the coach at this level and he has done really well helping bring some of the younger players through and ensure despite a number going on loan or being involved with the first team, we continue to play the right way and keep winning too – often against more experienced players. Recall a very strong Burnley side getting pumped in a game at the Lane towards the end of the season when we had a far more inexperienced side in contract. Collins had a brief spell as Bradford manager and seems to have hit the ground running with results and performance. It is probably forgotten about as we did not seen him involved day to day or heard from him but we appointed Adie Boothroyd as a coach/mentor and consultant but he left to manage Indian Super League club Jamshedpur.

Some of the u18’s/U21’s interchange – many are at different points of their development of course but it is not uncommon for players to feature for both too and of course some have been around the first team. We have not used many senior players as over age players for the U21’s but not many teams do this anymore and that is how it should be.

One issue regardless of the facilities is now recruitment even at this level. The EFL sanction of the transfer embargo also extends down to academy level regarding professional deals, as was the case when their attempts to sign Chelsea youngster Silko Thomas and Rochdale's Ethan Brierley were blocked as a result of the punishment. We recently had Ryan Giggs son, Zak on trial. If Giggs impresses he could be offered a scholarship but even that would be dependent on the circumstances around the deal. They would still be prevented from this if a compensation fee is required either now or in the future, for example.

Competitions

U21 Professional Development League (“U21PDL”)

The Blades came into the campaign as reigning North section champions for a second successive season, although they had failed to go on and win the national playoffs on either occasion.

With the termination of the agreement that allowed the Blades Women and senior academy team to use Chesterfield’s Technique Stadium, the team moved the bulk of its home fixtures to York Community Stadium, the home of York City.

After losing two of the opening three games, the Blades went on a run which saw 15 victories from the next 20 games with just one defeat to wrap up a third consecutive North title by the 23rd March.#

They were to face Bristol City in the semi finals of the play offs on Monday 15th May and hammered them 4-0 with Osula (3) and Marsh scoring and would go on to face Millwall in the final – to be played at the Den (maybe it should have been the Lane looking at how many points we got compared to our opponents in their respective league but Def Leppard had to be set up of course!).

Premier League Cup (“PLC”)

The Blades were placed in a group with two Category 1 academies, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, together with the team that had beaten them in the previous year’s league playoffs, Bristol City. The teams played each other home and away during the World Cup break, aiming to finish in the top two and progress to the round of 16. The Blades played all of their home games first, losing to Crystal Palace but then beating both Bristol City and Newcastle United. The first two games were played at Bramall Lane and the third behind closed doors at Glanford Park, home of Scunthorpe United.

They won their first away game against Newcastle United at the Northumberland FA’s Whitley Park ground but then lost heavily at Bristol City’s training ground. Results elsewhere meant the Blades needed a point against Crystal Palace at Champion Hill, home of Dulwich Hamlet. Defeat would see the Eagles progress instead.

The Blades secured the point with a 1-1 draw and progressed into the last 16 where they were given a tough away draw to Category 1 academy, Southampton. Despite a valiant effort at Testwood Stadium, home of AFC Totton, the Blades lost 1-0 and went out of the competition.

U18 Professional Development League (“U18PDL”)

As both reigning national and North section champions, the young Blades had a lot to live up to but a very average start to the season with three wins and three defeats from the first seven games left the Blades very much in midtable.

A very good Barnsley side moved into an almost unassailable lead at the top of the table, however, a run of 11 wins from the next 13 games pushed the Blades into contention for the remaining playoff spot. The Blades trailed off a bit at the end but still finished second and then ended up facing Charlton (a side they faced last season in the final) at the Valley in the semi-finals of the playoffs but got smashed 5-1 as the Addicks had an older side on the whole with the Blades having a number of younger players starting.

FA Youth Cup (“FAYC”)

The Blades U18s entered the competition at the third-round stage with a home tie against West Ham United, who at the time were the best placed youth team in the country. As with the women’s cup games played during the World Cup, the game was scheduled to be played at Scunthorpe United’s Glanford Park. Following a postponement due to heavy rain, it was finally played at North Street, home of Alfreton Town. Despite a late goal from Sam Aston, the Blades went out 3-1.

U18 Premier League Cup (“U18PLC”)

The Blades were invited as one of the best three ranked Category 2 academies to compete in the competition, alongside all of the Category 1 academies. They were placed in a group with Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Leeds United - all Category 1 academies. This was a tougher assignment than the PLC; the teams played each other once with just the group champions progressing to the quarter final stage. The Blades got off to a great start beating Leeds United at their Thorp Arch training centre before unfortunately losing to Crystal Palace at Shirecliffe. But then a win at Shirecliffe in their final group game against Brighton and Hove Albion, combined with a favourable result in the other game, saw the Blades top the group and claim a home tie in the quarter finals against Fulham.

The tie, played at Shirecliffe, saw a rampant Blades side run away with a 3-0 victory over their Category 1 counterparts and send them into the last four. The semi-final gave the Blades another home tie, this time against Tottenham Hotspur. The game at Shirecliffe, played at times in driving snow, looked to be heading into extra time when Spurs scored a last-minute winner to end the Blades fantastic run.

Player Summaries

For each of the five competitions @goodpinch has provided incredible research so big thanks to him:

● Apps (appearances - set out as starting appearances, appearances from the bench and non-appearances as an unused sub

● Mins (minutes played based on 90-minute games - it’s often impossible to gather any added time played but I do have all substitution times)

● Gls (goals scored) Over age The Premier League allows up to three outfield players and the keeper to be over age in U21PDL and PLC games. It allows U19 keepers to play in the U18PDL and U18PDLC although the Blades didn’t have any this season.

EFL Championship U21 Squad

During the course of the season, 55 players within the U17 to U21 age groups were named in the Blades two EFL squads - 3 loan players who had to be named in the primary squad and 52 of the Blades own players in the U21 squad.

The loan players included midfielder James McAtee (U20) who did not appear in any academy matchday squads and two that did:

Tommy Doyle (U21) - Midfield

U21PDL: Apps X-X-X Mins X Gls X

Reda Khadra (U21) - Midfield

U21PDL: Apps 1-0-0 Mins 65 Gls 0

Of the 52 players in the U21 squad, there were 31 in the U19 to U21 age groups and 21 in the U17 and U18 age groups.

5 of the 31 senior academy players appeared in no matchday squads. Kacper Łopata (U21) left the club at the end of the summer transfer window to join Southend United. 4 others spent the whole season on loan: defender Harry Boyes (U21 at Forest Green Rovers and Lincoln City), midfielder Zak Brunt (U21 at Boreham Wood), midfielder Harrison Neal (U21 at Barrow) and defender Femi Seriki (U20 at Rochdale). These players are discussed in the first team squads as have been playing ‘league’ first team football.

The remaining 26 senior academy players all appeared in matchday squads:

U21 squad (including loaned out players)
– Some of the below ended season or spent time with other clubs during the season. Those that have either played or been involved in match day squads this season will be discussed as part of the 1st team squad.

Amissah, Jordan

Contract: End of 22-23 / Aged 21

Notes: Loaned to Burton Albion in the Football League. See 1st team for notes.

Angell, Tom

Contract: End of 22-23 / Aged 19

Notes: Loaned to Spennymoor in the National League North

Diminutive left back (only 5’4’’) who did well for the u18’s and started to become involved for the U21’s before he ended up on loan at Spennymoor and got some good experience at this level (mens football).

Arblaster, Oliver

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 18

Notes: See 1st team for notes.

Ayari, Hassan

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 20

Notes: Midfielder and Forward. Tunisian u20 international. Spent time on loan with Scarborough in the National League North

Came from TW Braga and a few seasons ago, he helped Tunisia u20 qualify for the African u20 Cup of Nations and then finish fourth at the finals in Mauritania. He became known in the academy and U21’s for his superb free kicks and scored quite a few. Did well in 21-22 to start with then he tailed off and was not even a regular at this level. Was not used much to start this season and there was talk of a contract dispute. He was allowed to trial with other clubs and played for our city rivals against us but did not do enough to be taken on. Came back to us and played some games at U21 level but was not used that much and you expect he will depart this summer as he has not progressed like we had hoped and the contract issues did not help. Technically seems a good player but may need to work on the other side of his game (defensive work/off the ball).

Barratt, Connor

Contract: 1st year pro / Aged 18

Notes: Defender.

Signed from Birmingham earlier this season few seasons ago. He played for the u18’s last season and now has ended up being a regular for the U21’s who of course have done so well.

Belehouan, Seri Jéan Leroy

Contract: End of 22-23 / Aged 22

Notes: Defender. Loaned to Boston United in the National League North.

He seems to have been around a while but had a number of injuries. Had spells at Halifax but got injured and it all seemed very stop start between the U21’s, them and the treatment table. Was out for almost a year through injury. Was given a new loan at Farsley Celtic towards the end of the previous season. Athletic defender who began at Manchester United this past season he ended up at Boston United after Xmas and played a fair bit for them. He is not young now and one that you sense might move on?

Brooks, Andre

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 19

Notes: Midfielder. See 1st team for notes.

Buyabu, Jili

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 21

Notes: Midfielder. See 1st team for notes.

Dewhurst, Marcus

Contract: End of 21/22 / Aged 21

Notes: Loaned to Boston United. See 1st team for notes.

Freckleton, Miguel

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 19

Notes: Defender. Loaned to Wealdstone and Yeovil in the National League. See 1st team for notes.

Gaxha, Leonardo

Contract: Pro until 22/23 (now left) / Aged 20

Notes: Midfielder/Striker

Gaxha, who hails from Kerry in Ireland, seemed to have been around the club for a long time now but missed a whole season due to a bad injury and left United for Kerry FC in February, 2023.

Gomis, Nickseon

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 21

Notes: Defender. Loaned to Beerschot in the Belgium 2nd division. See 1st team for notes.

Gordon, Kyron

Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Age 20

Defender. See 1st team for notes.

Hackford, Antwoine

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Age 19

Notes: Striker

From Arbourthorne and attended Springs Academy; Hackford grew up not far from Bramall Lane. It seemed for a few years this lad was talked up as being the next best thing off the conveyor belt and Wilder certainly saw the potential others did taking him on tour to Scotland with the senior squad last pre-season. He returned to the u18’s/U21’s but the fact he was playing even at the latter level at 16 said how much he was thought of. He ended up back around the first team and a combination of injuries and poor form meant he was on the bench for a few games and even came on once at Palace. He went back to the U21’s and even the u18’s for a few years, as Jebbison and Osula sort of overtook him and the last year we have not seen him play that many games or as many as we would like. We did send him on a loan to Alfreton Town in 2021-22 but only for a month. Fully fit at last he seems to be regaining his form and fitness and had a full season and played double figures in game and scored 9 games. He is still only 19 seemingly having been here for ages but another that needs pro games somewhere.

Hampshaw, Henry

Contract: 2nd year scholar / Aged 19

Notes: Goalkeeper

Trialled from Huddersfield Town before signing in January 2021. Split games with Hiddleston at U18 level as the keeper last season but has not been seen at U21 level this season. Is listed still on the books but you wonder if he will remain as he is not being used?

Hiddleston, Callum

Contract: Pro until 23-24 / Aged 19

Notes: Goalkeeper. Loaned to Guisley earlier in the season.

Goalkeeper that came to prominence after his penalty saves in the Youth Cup win over Millwall at Bramall Lane last season. Played his way into contention at U21 level and played 11 times at this level this season. He went on loan for a period at Guiseley but then returned I believe. Hope he will be able to play more but it is a crowded mix with Eastwood, Dewhurst and Amissah there – you would sense a few of those need to move on if he is to remain?

Jebbison, Daniel

Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Age 18

Striker. See 1st team for notes.

Lopata, Kacper

Contract: Now left (for Southend / Now at Woking) Aged 21

Included him here as he was still part of the squad after the summer but contract disputes meant he was to move on and he signed full time for Southend which still seemed a surprise as he was rated maybe higher than that? His side struggled and when he and others were not paid, it seemed like a poor move for him and he eventually signed for Woking. He has left Brighton, Sheff Utd and Southend now in 3 years and you wonder if he is getting very good advice as was seen as a decent prospect but now has to work his way back up the leagues.

Macedo, Fernando

Contract: 2nd year scholar / Aged 18

Notes: Forward.

Came from the Kinetic Foundation but he has been injured/not featured as much this season.

Maguire, Francis (Frankie)

Contract: Pro until 22/23 / Aged 19

Notes: Midfielder. Loaned to Kettering in the National League North. See 1st team for notes.

Marsh, Louis

Contract: Pro until 23-24 / Aged 18

Notes: Midfielder/Forward. See 1st team for notes.

Osula, Will

Contract: Pro until 23-24 / Age 19

Notes: Striker. Loaned to Derby in League One. See 1st team for notes.

Potter, Finley

Contact: Unknown / Age 19

Notes: Defender. Loaned to Barnet in the National League

Potter who was involved in England regional teams had been out for 20 months with a bad injury and only just came back before the play-off win against Charlton at the end of 21-22. Potter got back into the junior England sides (u18’s) and was playing for the U21’s before he ended up on loan at Barnet. He scored a few times in his spell here and was a regular at the back and pleased to see him giving Phil Parkinson some in the end of season game! He did have a difficult time in the playoff defeat but will all be good experience for him.

Seriki, Femi

Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Age 21

Notes: Loaned to Rochdale in the Football League. See 1st team for notes

Smith, Josh

Contract: Unknown / Aged 18

Notes: Midfielder

Signed from Bracknell Town two seasons ago, Smith has been able to score and assist regularly at u18 level and scored two cracking goals in the game against Colchester.

Starbuck, Joe

Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Age 22

Notes: Loaned to Kidderminster and Boston in the National League/National League North. See 1st team for notes

Wharton, Dylan

Contract: Pro until 23-24 / Aged 20

Notes: Signed from Chesterfield.

Wharton, aged 20, was signed from Chesterfield last summer. He has been on the books at Chesterfield for his whole career to date but despite being a regular for their youth sides, he never made a senior appearance for the Spireites. The non-league outfit loaned him out to Heanor Town in the last campaign to help him get some experience under his belt but United clearly saw something to give him a deal.

Williams, Luther

Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Aged 19

Notes: Defender who came from Chelsea. He has had injuries and struggled to play much this season

Williams, Theo

Contract: Pro until 22-23 / Aged 19

Notes: Striker. Loaned to Darlington and Farsley Celtic in the National League North.

Quick player who can operate wide or down the middle, seen him a few times for the academy and he is a threat going forward, liking to drive with the ball and dribble. He scored a number of goals at u18 level but has not established himself at U21 level and others have had more game time. Had loan spells at Darlington and Farsley Celtic

Academy Scholars

Just 1 of the 21 academy scholars in the U17 (first year/Y12) and U18 (second year/Y13) age groups appeared in no matchday squads. Will Lankshear left the club at the end of the summer transfer window to join Tottenham Hotspur.

The remaining 20 scholars all appeared in matchday squads:

Aston, Sam

U17

Notes: Midfield

Played a smattering of games at u18 level since signing from the Yorkshire Elite Football Academy.

Played in double figures in the u18’s and once for the U21’s. Plays centre or right of midfield.

Blacker, Billy

U17

Notes: Attack

Had been free scoring for the u16’s last season and got involved and scored for the u18’s too but has had some injuries this season limiting his game time.

Tavio Ciccarelli, Tavio

U17

Notes: Attack

Clarke, Stafford

U17

Notes: Midfield

Right sided defender. He was a regular for the u18s and then made his debut at Bristol City at the end of the season.

Cummings, Ethan

U17

Notes: Attack

Dickinson, George

U18

Notes: Midfield.

Skippered the u18’s at times. Good ball player and competitive too in the bits I have seen. He looked to be one of the main men in this side.

Drake, Ben

U18

Notes: Defender

Faxon, Luke

U18

Notes: Goalkeeper

Played a few games at u23 level at the end of the season

Hampson, Owen

U18

Notes: Midfield

Welsh youth international. Joined in early 2021 from Manchester United. Had quite a few injuries

Havenhand, Kurt

U17

Notes: Attack

Been prolific at U18 level and had some games at U21. Saw him play Wednesday and looked very promising – mobile, strong and skilled centre forward who is decent in the air but has a powerful shot. One to watch definitely.

Ly , Brandon

U17

Notes: Defence

Haughton-Parris, Mehki

U17

Notes: Defence

Oluleye, Johnny

U17

Notes: Forward.

Spent some time on loan at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Peck, Sydie

U18

Notes: Midfielder.

He was on loan at Oldham during the 22-23 season in the National League. See 1st team for notes.

Pitan, Levis

U17

Notes: Defender

Centre back who joined from Coventry. He has been heavily involved at u18 level this season. Represented Poland at u17 level in January.

Prunty, Jayden

U17

Notes: Defender

Sachdev, Sai

U18

Notes: Defender. See 1st team for notes.

Staniland, Charlie

U18

Notes: Midfielder

Part of the successful u18 side the previous season and his displays saw him elevated to the U21’s. Tough tackling and skilful red headed midfielder.

Yam, Callum

U17

Notes: Goalkeeper

Waldron, Jack

U17

Summary / Next season

United continue to be very successful at the younger levels despite the facilities being inferior to many we are beating most weeks. We have players operating at higher age groups than they should be playing and we keep winning and have been very successful in both age groups. This seems to happen routinely but is clearly down to lots of hard work and repetition/good habits. Even when the u18’s moved up, the newer younger lads still were at the top of the league with the u18’s and the lads who moved to the U21’s supplanted with a few others who were still around from last season, absolutely romped the league.

We need to be now competing with bigger clubs and need that move to better facilities and the higher academy category. Clearly there is some outstanding coaches and ethos in place. There are also some good players and we have seen a number doing well on loan at non-league level. United seem a good place to go to develop, get games at higher age levels and get senior football when deemed ready. There is a lot of excellent coaching and clearly every year we have some knocking on the door. Brooks and Arblaster two this year that stand out. We will not produce a Calvert Lewin, Maguire or even a Jebbison or Osula every year but seems standard we have players coming through most age groups.

You can only imagine if we improve the facilities and move to a better training ground and get Category 1 status and can improve our scouting and retention (losing players like Lankshear and Midwood sadly inevitable as it stands) then we could justifiably be right up there as one of the best academies in the country (it is very good as it stands) and compete even with the huge clubs. We also have a knack of picking up kids like Peck from other clubs and have signed a few from Chelsea in the current u18 set up and Zach Giggs has recently signed too. The academy still remains one of the big assets of this club and it is imperative this is allowed to continue to develop.

---

SUFC Women’s team have been a bit up and down the last few years after making real progress before that in quite rapid time. About the time United hit our peak as the men’s team, you thought they may do the same but with only one promotion place it is difficult and there has been Man Utd and Liverpool at this level in recent years. They faded away in 21-22 after starting well and seemingly having a chance of promotion but ended up nearer the bottom than top. This season they have been right near the bottom most of the campaign. Good they have had the games at Bramall Lane this season and there has been some decent crowds. Being part time means it will be hard to compete with some but when they let Neil Redfearn go, they brought in their first full time manager in Jonathan Morgan. Morgan was able to help keep United up with some improvements in results to close the season and will hope next season will allow them to continue these recent improvements as they reeled off a number of wins at the end of the campaign. They have quite recognisable players in Courtney Sweetman Kirk (pundit whose reputation in this field is growing also) and long serving Maddie Cusack.

Outstanding stuff Deaders and thanks to @goodpinch for the detail. Encouraging potential in the younger ranks.

Excellent work. Just read through all the reports. Incredible effort

Outstanding effort. Just made a 30 minute train journey fly by!

Great read. Have watched the U21's a few times this season what is striking is how comfortable they are in possession. There is also good balance with a number of left footed players in the squad. I've high hopes for Brookes, LM 6 foot plus physically strong and glides past the opposition. Something we've been missing on the left of midfield at first team level for some time.

Our other major area of weakness is at LCB. Nickosen Gomis seems to have gone backwards at Beerschot as did Broadbent and Serki. We really need to ditch this type of loan as an option as Broadbent has since flourished at Boreham Wood.

Considering the pitfalls of the facilities at Shirecliffe, love the reference to the hydro portacabin, we continue to attract good quality youngsters and that must be down to the reputation of our coaching staff. We have to hope a new owner materialises soon with a commitment to invest in infrastructure. Then the promised academy upgrade can become reality rather than a pipe dream. As with the first team the Academy continues to excel despite the Board not because of them.

Thanks to good pinch - added the final stats now

For each of the five competitions I’ve provided:

Gls (goals scored)
