1990 home v Bournemouth, Harry Redknapp was manager and a young Jamie was playing.

2 missed pens and a 2-0 win

I started watching Dem Blades in the 70/71 season. I don’t remember many cup games tbh. In fact the first cup game I really remember is the Bristol City win. Was it really 75? And I went to Villa Park and witnessed the 4-1 thrashing.

It’s odd but I don’t remember any cup games between 71 and 75. I’m sure we must have got beaten fairly early in the competition. We had a pretty good team back then but we were bloody awful in the cup.
Bert has a memory of going to Carlisle away on the train and getting beat in the cup.

Leicester was in the League Cup in October 1969. We lost 2-0

I think this was after we'd beaten the Inter Cities Fairs Cup winners, Newcastle United in the previous round. This was probably my first giant killing experience by the Blades. A great night as we kept the ariel threat of Wyn Davies quiet.

United had this tendency of beating clubs unexpectedly, building up our hopes and then crash out in the next round.

West Ham away, 1968 in the 5th round, couple of Phil Cliff goals and I could see the twin towers in the distance. Next round we lose to Leeds at Elland Road.

Liverpool at home, 1978 in the league cup. 1-0 Gary Hamson. Next round lose to Leeds (again) 4-1 at the Lane. (Return of TC)

As mentioned earlier. 1970 beat Everton 2-1 and then lose to Derby 3-0 at the Baseball ground.

One thing, we have always been consistent at being inconsistent.

The only home FA Cup game between Everton in 1970 and Bristol City in 1975 was Cardiff in 1972 (lost 3-1)

Stoke 3rd round 1983. They were first division. Obviously, we weren't. Held them to a draw at home I think and lost the replay. We were OK at home but dire away that season. The following season we played Everton and again got a replay which I understand we were quite unlucky to lose. The pig apparently put in a good performance and we were able to offload him to them. Which was nice.

Went to the replay at Stoke, United should have won, 2-1 up at half-time, it looked as if the team were celebrating at the end of the first period. It was the pig Curran's best game in a Blades shirt, he had a run in the second half were he waltzed through their defence, most Blades were expecting him to go around the goally and roll the ball into an empty net (as he had done for the pigs, they always showed it in the opening credits on the local Yorkshire TV football programme) ... instead Curran clipped it over the keeper and pushed it just over the bar. Stoke had a good team at that time and had even been top of the table earlier in the 82/83 season. Think if we'd have won it would have been Sunderland in round 4, our manager Porterfield's former club where he famously scored the winning goal in the 73 cup final.

My first FA cup game watching United ... Newcastle at the Lane in 1977, drew 1-1, lost the replay 3-1 or 3-0 seem to remember. First away FA cup game, Chessie at Saltergate in 1980, replay on a Tuesday night, lost 1-0, got a feeling that top-hat Alan Birch (might have been Ernie Moss) scored for them (sure he got a last minute penalty equaliser in the first game). And recall Steve Neville having a goal chalked off for some infringement or another in the replay. This was the season we lost 3 away games 1-0 at Chessie (League, FA cup and ASC), in fact we lost 5 games against Chessie in 1980, the previous season we played and lost to them in the second half of the campaign twice.

My first FA cup game watching United ... Newcastle at the Lane in 1977,

Steve Faulkner played well in that match!

EDIT: I remember a group of policemen pulling a fan out of the Lane End and they were struggling to control him so they pulled his trousers down. It happened before the kick off and there was a photo of it in the front page of the Green Un

I think my first FA cup match was Blackpool at the Lane but nor sure...we were crap in the Cup around that time.
After that the Arsenal 5-0 defeat sticks in my mind...remember Burscough coming was it 79 or 80...made hard work of a 3-0 win...Best memories are in more recent years.

you sure, not many replays happen on a Saturday.

Yes pal, it was a replay at Notts County in 99. Went supping with a load of County fans after the Lane game, mates of a mate. The replay I think ended up getting postponed and if I remember right was played on 4th round day. Remember the result coming in on TV at the White Rose at Handsworth, think we'd been 3-1 down with not long left and turned it round late on.

Great thread.

Mine was 90-91 third round at home to Luton. We’d just won a few games after the long winless run (including against Luton) and I was optimistic for a win in the cup. However, we lost 3-0 or 3-1, but with hindsight it was probably the best thing that could have happened, with the run we then went on.

I think it was one of those matches (like Swindon away in the playoffs) where you look back at the score and recall it being a cracking match, when in actual fact it was dreadful, only saved by a very late comeback. Didn’t we have someone sent off as well?

I do recall a damn good pub crawl on the way back from the ground.

Wasn't a replay pal, just 3rd round. We was 3-1 down with 5 mins to go.

According to the stats site it was...

21 days after the original tie mind...I remember it all pretty vividly because the replay was on a saturday and i'd swapped a shift at work and done 16hrs straight through so I could go to it!

First taste of the FA Cup was our quarter final replay with Coventry in 1998. Not a bad night.

I remember some Cov fans were sat behind us in the south stand - they were quite sporting blokes, and even decided to leave a few minutes before full time to avoid any trouble... :)

Yes a 3rd round replay on the saturday amongst the 4th round ties being played!

It was a cracking match...a clash of styles that made for a really good encounter...Allardyce had Notts Cty flying in League 1 similar to how CW had the Blades last season having notched 103pts in League 2 the season before, a lot of pin point accurate long balls played from the diagonals, RB to Left Wing and LB to Right Wing, the introduction of 15/16yr old Pennant who was sold off to Arsenal not long after for 1m..and of course the Blades met Arsenal in the 4th round and there was all the Kanu throw in dramas.

Unlike nowadays where they prefer to jump on the pitch and throw things!

I went to the replay TD,it's sad to see the state of the ground nowadays,it was a tidy little stadium, didn't Trace score a penalty to send us through?

It’s recently been demolished to make way for a retail complex

Think mine was 0-0 draw at home to first division Stoke in 1983. I remember it seeming weird seeing the Bramall Lane terrace full. We lost the replay 3-2. Apparently Curran played a blinder.

I genuinely couldnt remember so did some research although I remember listening to the Coventry away quarter final in 98 in the car. from meadowhall. i think because of age & away draws I didn't attend my 1st fa cup game until 4 years later v forest at home in 2002 when i was 11. from research i think it looked a bit of boring 1-0 which is probally why I couldn't remember it. 1st game i can remember was the 2003 home game ironically the last time we played ipswich in the fa cup when we won 4-3

although in my research, I found something very weird that I haven't notice before, that in 1999/2000 when we played Rushden & diamonds in the 3rd round & beat them on penalties but didnt know it took place in mid December instead of the traditional 1st Saturday in january. anyone know why 3rd round date was changed & further more they played the 4th round on 3rd round date, 5th round on 4th round date etc & the Quarter Finals in febuary instead of march

They moved it due to the Euros at the end of the season, and also I think partially down to the fact that FIFA launched the World Club Championship and as Man Utd was Champions League Champions they was the UEFA representative that season, and down to that they didn’t compete in the FA Cup that season

Mine was a 1-0 defeat at home to Derby. Either 85-86 or 86-87. Remember the scorer for Derby was the late Ross MacClaren and Derby bring loads, don’t think I had ever seen as many away supporters at the Lane and we could well have been out numbered that day. I wouldn’t be surprised if there hasn’t been a bigger away followIng at the Lane since.

Brownie Jnrs first game was Fulham in the 13-14 cup run. A 1-1 draw on a day that it absolutely pissed it down. Just a shame that he was maybe a year or two, too young to fully appreciate the cup run that season.
