Pompey 2 Blades 0 on 2nd January 1971. Went on the train special that went straight to Portsmouth (no changing at London and I remember my dad saying that we were on the line that bypassed London and I would be interested to know what the route was, which stations we went through etc).

Looking at the match programme, my dad pointed out Mike Trebilcock to me and he was telling me that Mike scored two goals in Everton's 3-2 win against Wendy in the 1966 FA Cup final We had won 5-1 in the last two visits at Fratton Park so I was confident of us winning there again but goals from Ray Hiron and Trebilcock ended our dreams! After the match my dad said that being knocked out of the FA Cup would help our promotion chances.

On returning to the Midland station we heard news of the Ibrox disaster

Nov 1979 v Burscough. I think it was 0-0 half time. Played shite won 3-0

Didn’t Tracey make a mistake in that one then was the hero in the replay?

I think you are right, it's a vague memory, but I remember he made some witty retort to the R&Ds fans singing "Dodgy Keeper" during the return game. In fact, I think we all made some witty retorts to them.

Route was probably Sheffield-Derby-birmingham-Didcot-basingstoke-portsmouth.

12th December 1999

Sheffield United 1-1 Rushden & Diamonds.

My god weren't we fucking dire back then!?

I went to the replay TD,it's sad to see the state of the ground nowadays,it was a tidy little stadium, didn't Trace score a penalty to send us through?

Burnley 1962, lost 1-0, 57,000 in the ground. Awesome experience for a 9 y.o.

Good question. I started going to the lane in 1990/ 91 season. So it was most likely that i saw us lose 1-3 at home to Luton Town, but can't remember it, even though i remember most of the other games that season.

The first one i remember then was the Burnley 2-2 draw, but only because i listened to the replay on the radio.

It was the subsequent FA Cup games that season which really stood out, Man U home and then beating Blackburn at home in the replay penalty shoot out.

Yeah it's a shame, Nene Park was a tidy little ground for a new-build. Seems such a waste that it disappeared so soon. I don't think that Diamonds have played in the local area since.

3rd jan 1970
United beat the then div1 champs 2 -1 at the lane. My dad got us in the posh seats on john street. We were in div two at the time .

That was mine. Deane was on the bench, and we fell behind 2-0 through a brace from enormously popular Blades legend Adrian Heath. Hodges and Beesley got the late goals, and I think someone (Adrian Littlejohn?) was sent off. This began a tradition of going to bloody freezing FA Cup games, which I will add to this afternoon.

What a game that was! I watched from BLUT, superb view of flying headers from Gilbert and Addison.

Was littlejohn sent off in that game or was it the Hartlepool game?

Hodges was a legend back then

Didn’t we put 5 past them again the following season ? Or did they put 5 past us ?
