Great thread.

If it’s just about the commentary and not the player/goal, then it has to be Jags goal vs Leeds. I was right behind that strike in John Street with my dad that night. I still love listening to the commentary even now.

For the combination of commentary + player + importance of the moment, then Basham Arriving.

For something really iconic, by an iconic commentator, then “quality goal by a quality player”. Even though it was before my time, still gives goosebumps.

Going to get this wrong, but I seem to remember getting a VHS about United, somebody will correct me, but I think it was called 100 years, 100 goals.

It was about the 1988/9 season, and it seemed like the commentary for every goal was "and it's there".

I would imagine nobody has a clue what I'm talking about 😂

It was "and it's there ..yes"

3: There were no shirts available to buy/ wear so everyone seemed to wear scarves with a few wearing rosettes.
That period is a painful one as i missed the opportunity to become an entrepreneur.
A few of us had been on holiday and had Tony Currie walks on water t-shirts printed. We wore them to the first home game of the season and if I'd a supply of them I could have sold hundreds. I could have been on the way to making millions, well perhaps a few quid.

Bobby Davison debut at the sty build up to the 1st goal... down the wing a canter for Bradshaw ..

I used to love that video. Do you remember the really weird ‘dream sequence’ where the host (can’t remember his name but can picture him even now) was in the dressing room w Deano and Agana?

It was, both Daniel Mann. First time was in the 5-5 vs Swindon. Basham scored a header in the first half.
Cheers, thought it must be.
Just a pity that the first time around it didn't have the same impact as the second time.
Unfortunately there are a number of commentators that try to pre-empt something exciting happening. They don't want to miss what might be a chance in a lifetime to provide commentary on a special goal, 999 times out of a thousand they get it wrong.
Having the ability to get the big calls right is vital in improving the viewers experience.

Me & my mate are on that video, celebrating at the front of the kop as 14 year olds.
I remember seeing you tbh

I was in the seats with Grand PaPa and remember thinking I would love to be common like that lonely boy 🧒🏻 at the front of the Kop - but it was never to happen .

BTW - as I remember it - it wasn’t your mate , but an imaginary friend as you were definitely jumping alone

I thought you were still going to Hillsborough in those days?

As seen on one of those great posters you see dotted around S2 "And Clarke is there AGAIN!"

Full quote: “Clarke foraging here…Lees has to get it right and doesn’t…And Clarke is there AGAIN!... It’s another one for him and surely that’s the one that seals derby victory for Sheffield United!…And on this extraordinary day at Hillsborough, he has come back to haunt his old club!”

Deffo seen that video

Although painful at the time........

"He's missed. Steve Simonsen clears the frame of the goal (an understatement) and collapses in a heap of tears"

Now I just find it very amusing.

HH🤣

My 1st ever match watching the Blades…..50 years ago.
It’s weird how time seems to speed up…..the older you become….that illusion is so real.

My memories were
1: The hero worship and fan confidence in Tony Currie.
It felt like the best player in the PL ( div 1) was playing for Sheff Utd,
2: The atmosphere on the Kop was really good and loud. The roof was sloping downwards so had the effect of keeping the noise in.
3: There were no shirts available to buy/ wear so everyone seemed to wear scarves with a few wearing rosettes.
4: Catching the bus back waiting outside Atkinsons on a very busy The Moor to catch a bus.
In them days The Moor wasn’t pedestrianised with traffic travelling on it.
The programme used to advertise a ‘replica’ (no sponsors or manufacturers logo in those days) available @ Jack Archer’s sports shop - on Bramall next / near to the Cricketers ?
In essence a generic crew neck red & white striped jersey (made by bukta) . No ‘club’ crest which was the City coat of arms & subject to copyright or some such restriction although you could buy (& stitch on) a small white cotton square patch with round ‘Sheffield United’ emblem (incorporating the arrows & wheat sheaves from the coat of arms) from the supporters (corner) shop on John Street.
Paradoxically you could (easily) buy numbers to affix to (generic) black shorts @ a time when few clubs had such on their shorts.
Subsequently ( I think) we had a couple of seasons (>73 ?) with a (discrete) Umbro logo on the jersey when it sported a collar (& V insert) prior to Admiral really ‘taking over’ - prominent logo , black pinstripes & black / white hooped collar & cuffs. Their 1st (New stand / Guthrie/ relegation season) replica jersey was made from some horrendous incredibly coarse synthetic material that had the equivalent effect as taking a cheese grater to your nipples !

A quality goal, by a quality player!

Just as memorable for me was the programme’s presenter ( I can’t recall who it was back them ) coming on TV in the early evening to give a foretaste of what was to come on MOTD .

His words were , and I think I can still quote these almost verbatim , “ If you’re planning on going out tonight , cancel your arrangements , stay in and watch Match of the Day . I can tell you why in just two words - Tony Currie “.

Brilliant .

Some of the best ones from the last 10 years.

1) Sharp, Billy Sharp scores for Sheffield United, the first player since Keith Edwards to get 30 goals in a campaign.
2) Inside and outside he goes, that's a stunning goal, how on earth did he manage that
3) Oh, what a time, what a place, to score your first senior goal
4) Basham's arriving
5) O'Connell coming in
6) Back to Doyle, out of his wing, world class, absolutely world class strike from Tommy Doyle
7) they've worked it beautifully, they've worked it brilliantly, Tyrese Campbell
Oh, great. Now I'm aroused. And at an inopportune moment.

Nice one, cheers.
