Whilst I've had the pleasure of seeing TC, Woody and others of that great era, the one player that left a lasting impression on me was a short, slight, unassuming man who helped Edwards to get many of his lower league goals and that player was Colin Morris

The other player I shall not forget was a very young man who had his career ruined by a certain Rodney Marsh and that was Tom McAllister. What a great keeper he was at such a tender age
Still have TC as the best...so close with Woody and the rest of that squad...but you are so right with Morris and the great McAllister!

Such memories!

I bet you don't need 3 guesses who my favourite player was. When you consider that him and his pal & team mate, Joe Shaw played well over 1,000 games between them for the club that they loved, not counting the best United keeper & sweeper I have seen for us. I can vouch for the fact that they were both gentlemen of the highest order too

Here's some of my favs:

Deano
Jags
Alan Kelly
Glynn Hodges
Brian Sharp
Dane Whitehouse
Stephen Quinn

Can't say who is my fav tho. Too tricky.

It's a difficult choice for my best player as there's so many to choose from!. Danish, Bradshaw and Kelly spring to mind from the past. Chris Morgan always left everything on the pitch. I also quite liked Mitch ward. Nowadays it's billy and fleck ect. Mel Rees will always have a special place in my memory!. A fantastic goalkeeper who's life was cut tragically short by the dreaded C word!!. Utb

Few of the United Players that weren;t your obvious Deane, Curry or Sharpe.

Mike Trusson - bought from Plymouth in the early 80's.

Remember at Nothampton ( When they had a cricket pitch). United were shite until 2 goals from M.T. in the last 2 minutes, one a bullet header and we won 2-1.

All Smiles just as you were waiting for the boos.

Billy Whitehurst - John Gannon - Chrissy Porter - Carl Asaba. Unsung hero's.

In my opinion anyways. Never gone with the Norm. But still a Blade.
Yes I was at that game Jon we were awful and stole 3 points on our way to winning the 4th division ,just shows !! winning ugly sometimes on the way to glory

As a goalkeeper myself growing up, Alan Kelly was an inspiration. His saves defied physics.

Deano for me. Such a talismanic figure. Could get all sides chanting his name, electric!

Must say the current incumbent is making a good case for favorite manager!

Colin Morris....
As a young lad he mesmerised me !! Probably the biggest influence on me being a blade.Absolutely loved the way he played.

Saw him rip us to shreds as a Blackpool player. Delighted we signed him.

Top man came to see me in hospital when I was laid up for many many weeks.
Just in the remote case you ever you get on here Colin , I've never ever forgotten your kindness.

Hope one day to shake your hand again and say a massive thanks.

Once a Blade

Probably deano but the way he broke my heart by moving to Leeds really pits a dampened on that

Watched him grow from a gangly awkward teenager to a pacy powerful confident England international over three divisions and felt like I was on the journey with him until he decided he was too big for the blades

Some of the more recent signings like walker and Maguire I hold in high regard because they come back as fans and anyone who does that is oreyt wi me

Tom Cowan or Carl Bradshaw, the type of defender I wanted to be growing up

we have been blessed with some great home grown talent and some amazing players brought in, but probably against the run of the thread, my Favourite player is Chris Morgan, always stepped up always gave 100% and never left anything back, In trouble at times for playing the way he did but bloody hell he was like a mountain for Attackers to try and climb at times, backed up by some other great Centre Backs, but for me Morgan was always ever present, and he did all he did, despite the fact he was born a dingle.

dane for me growing up, loved his whole hearted approach, the guy bled red and white, should have had an england call with some of the dross we had playing down the left, deano obviously aswell, great feet for a big guy, and a bit left field i know, as a lot didn't rate him but i always enjoyed watching john gannon play

Got to be Tony Currie. Still the best player I've ever seen.

So many other favourites from that era though. Woody, Keith Eddy, Len and Ted.

Since then Keith Edwards, Deano, Simon Tracey

Of the present team Coutts - what a player, "he never gives the ball away"

Always was an Alan Kelly fan, brilliant keeper, closely followed by Dane Whitehouse.

Tony Kenworthy because his girlfriend was the sister on the ward I was on at Lodge Moor Hospital recovering from an appendectomy (I was about 8 or 9 and still knew she was fit!). Anyway, on her nod he came in one afternoon to pick her up, with Gary Hamson in tow, and gave me a signed autograph book with all the players in it. I asked Gary Hamson if I could have a signed shirt but he said he only had his boots on him and he'd give me his boots but he'd be in trouble so he gave me one of the laces instead, which made my day and it is mounted on my wall in a framed photo with Gary and TK in it, to this day... So TK sticks in my memory as my favourite player for that reason (Gary might have been up there if he'd dared to hand over his whole boot the tight bastard).

Too many 'favourites' in last 20 years.

Deane
Hodges
Bryson
Blake
Kachuro
Borbokis
Veart

Don't seem to get too attached to players as I've gotten older.

A bit left field this suggestion. We all know TC was the best by a mile, but seeing as we're talking about favourites, what about Billy Dearden? He used to run around till he dropped and got the nickname "Billy Three Lungs". He was also as brave as fuck and used to stick his head into situations that warranted a public health warning.

I'd give Morgan the runner up spot for similar reasons. These are the types of players that leave an imprint on your memories of going to the Lane.

And a hell of a nice bloke too.

Remember meeting him when he was at Chesterfield. Fearless player and a great goal scorer. Great understanding with Woodward.

Keith Edwards, simply because, he hardly ever let you down when he was through on goal.
Deane took some beating though for his efforts throughout 90mins
Currie we'nt too bad either, saying that Woodward usually played well.
Also liked Montgomery's efforts too.
Lets not forget Sharp ! So good we sold him twice !
It could be however, we are witnessing our best ever player right now - Brooks.
Dane Whitehouse.
Curtis Woodhouse
Bob Booker
Jim Brown
Trevor Hockey
Tony Agana
Hemsley
Badger
Sabella
Kelly
The list goes on
All hero's
Cos they all played for
S.U.F.C

Alan Woodward for me, fantastic striker and crosser of a ball. 2nd favorite Trevor hockey, hard as fcuk

Billy Dearden followed by Len Badger. Just loved watching Len very rarely had a off game. Billy was lightweight but he gave a lot of centre half’s a hard time. In one particular night game against Leeds he rose head and shoulders above Jackie Charlton and hit the bar with a thunderous header in the first few minutes. We won 3 0 that night.

Good call for Len Badger. I've said for many years that he was the best slide tackler I ever saw, an art that is all too rare in the modern game.

He had this incredible ability not only to win the tackle but at the same time cushion the ball between his leg and thigh , keeping it perfectly under control so that he was able to jump up with the ball at his feet and play us out of danger.

He is definitely in my Greatest Blades XI line up ............. but that's for another time.
