What clubs have come in for him then? Any serious bids/offers? He was on transfer list for ages wasn't he? Did Leeds actually make an offer or did the great Trevor Birch think Monty is so vital to the club we need to pay hom way over the odds? No wonder he is happy at a club paying obscene money to such a talentless footballer. I'm sure Ken Bates said this summer that no player has turned Leeds down, and scarily enough I'll take Bates' word over and above what comes out of BDTBL at the moment. Top earners at football clubs should be class acts not donkeys.

I don't remember criticising anyone's choice. It is their opinion after all. I merley implied that Monty being most peoples favourite player said a lot about the current state of our squad. I can't blame people for picking Monty, as I struggled to pick a favourite player (because of the lack of quality in the squad).

Once again you go over the top because you can't handle someone's opinion. Not only that but you can't handle the 'sunshine band' opinion. You see a negative/critical post by Mic, Fiery, Torrix or myself and blow a fuse. I was accused (by Sothall) to be 'fighting an imaginery war against the clappers', but it appears that you are trying to figh a war with the so called 'knockers'.

As ive said before, I just dont understand why people get so wound up. In regard to yourself, Mic, Fiery, Len etc. I can certainly see that you generally have a dim view of the team and its management/hierarchy but thats your opinion. I dont agree with everything you guys say and sometimes (with all due respect) I think you exaggerate our problems, but thats your opinion and often I find you make some interesting points (all of you). I think its healthy for the forum to have total opposite views and split sides of the fence as it makes discussion more interesting.....

I take a positive view of things most of the time but if everyone on here was 'happy happy clappy clappy' all the time I wouldnt bother visiting. Its best not to take discussion and indeed football itself too seriously. This is not a go at Shoreham because there are far more posters that get wound up by it as well. The bit that annoys me is that I come on here to read about and discuss the club. When threads descend into sarcaism and abuse regarding other members' opinions it just detracts from the whole point of being on a Blades forum for me.

Back on topic though....Monty wouldnt be one of my favourite players, although I dont dislike him. I just prefer to watch players who can get you off your seat (i.e. Wardy, Willo). Thats not to say I dont appreciate the job Monty does, but to pick him as a favourite player must be purely down to his commitment and passion.....rather than his technical attributes.

Do you not realise that once you insult someone rather than debate you lose the argument and they probably are not interested in debating anymore? I'm not going to get involved in personal battles because people can defend their own corners, but my point stands that people bite at the bait too easily. If we were to say for a moment that such comments arent 'tongue in cheek' and take it more as an attempt to antagonise other posters and get a reaction....just lets say it is for a moment....

It must be blatantly obvious to the rest of you that this is the case so why rise to it?! Personally I think Olle only resorts to this if someone tries to engage him in debate and why shouldn't he? In truth I am a sympathiser of anyone who wants to speak up....be that a "clapper" or a "knocker." I am a strong believer in democracy and feel that anyone who is part of a community (i.e. an internet forum) should behave in a democratic fashion. I'm referring to some of the things that form the spirit of democracy, such as freedom of speech and equality.....

So yes Boo, in many ways the "sunshine band" would appear to shout down differing opinions and take exception to things they dont agree with but thats all part of having an opinion and the freedom to express it. Quite rightly you make the point that it is the same the other way round, of course it is thats a valid point. But the original point I was making is that people take Olle and co's comments to heart far too much. Where as Olle for example will argue the toss but wont get annoyed about it....you can see the difference in the words that are used and the way they are expressed.

So whilst I dont acknowledge that I am a "sunshine band symapthiser" at the moment....I dont think Olle and co get more bad press than they deserve on here. No they're not a ray of sunshine (excuse the pun) a lot of the time, but thats called passion and if they didnt care about their club then they wouldnt waste their time on here talking about it. I liked Bob Booker too, and would vote for him ahead of Monty. I got tetchy because the thread has turned from "Your current favourite player" into "Slag off Monty and anyone who likes him". I don't like Monty for his skills or lack thereof but because he gives his all every match, and I am aware that he's not the most gifted player on the pitch and at times might not be the most gifted player in his house, but I like him, and the slagging that the lovers get off the haters is a pain in the arse to say the least.

To be called off our heads is ridiculous, but again it's down to the views some have and don't like contradicting by anyone. We were asked for our favourite current player, not our favourite subject to vetting by the Approval Committee. I like Monster Munch too, but not the Flamin' Hot ones. Is that wrong too?

It's when a poster suggests that people are "off their heads" because someone likes something they don't. I'm prepared to accept that Marmite is the work of Satan and mushrooms are evil incarnate, but to suggest that people are mentally incompetent because they like a footballer is ridiculous. I know this didn't come from you directly but it's rather irksome to say the least to have almost every view point picked to death by a few people who never seem to tire of telling us all that all is not rosy at Sheffield United. I know myself that things have been pretty shit, and that if we had a better squad then Monty and others wouldn't be playing, and that Small Quinn has been, well, cacky of late.

We were asked for our favourite player, like asking for our favourite flavour of crisps from those on the shelf. It's no use moaning that salt and vinegar are your favourite if all the shelf stocks are ready salted and roast beef, or slagging someone off because they have chosen from the flavours on show.

I like Monty. I know he's not exactly Johann Cruyff, or even Jordi, but he's not the worst footballer ever to draw breath that some would have us believe. Sure, he's got his limitations, but if he was world class then he would certainly be playing for a better side than us.

I'm not against the knockers per se, but at the moment it seems that almost every opportunity to state how shit things are is siezed with glee. There have been times especially towards the end of last season that I truly despaired, but I try to have a little balance with regards to Sheffield United. I am well aware that all is not rosy. I just don't take some kind of perverse pleasure in reminding everyone at every chance I get. I wouldn't view myself as a clapper either. I like the middle ground. I have come away from matches in the last year depending on the score either grinning with delight or wondering of the police would turn a blind eye to my torching all the players' cars and eating their pets.

I get tetchy when we get criticised blindly for offering our views. In the future perhaps I shouldn't bother, and just leave people to it.

The frustration, though, works both ways:

Firstly the Monty threads are invariably started by his admirers who then complain when some of us offer the genuine opinion that the Emperor has no clothes.

Secondly, and just as irksome, you might agree, as your own dissatisfaction, I have been told on several occasions that, despite close on 50 years of playing and watching, I know nothing about the game and / or simply cannot appreciate the qualities of our unlikely hero. It's not true. I just happen to think [am quite certain] that, admirable though he is in many ways, he is a poor footballer. I want better for our club. I'm sorry but, whilstever the likes of Monty are 'first on the teamsheet' we will not prosper; indeed we shall decline. I rather suspect that, whatever his public pronouncements, GS takes the same view.

No they cant have it all ways but you will find that disagreeable people tend to want it all ways. I'm not saying Olle or any of the others concerned definatelty do but you tend to find defiant characters often want their cake and eat it yes....

I dont think ive contradicted myself as such. I still maintain in both posts that such comments shouldn't be taken seriously but at the same time I'm recognising your point of view, which is perfectly valid. However it is all a matter of perception and how you take someone's comments. I suppose there isnt a right or wrong here really.

To be honest Boo, its probably just the way I am. I can take an aggressive or negative comment towards me and let it bounce off my chest (broad shoulders and all that). Even if I do on the rare occasion take it personally I just think they're a c*** and move on.

The difference for me is that where someone like Olle slates an opinion.....he gets slated for his conduct. There is a line somewhere for me.
