Morgan would probably be my favourite player at the club. He's one of the longest serving players and has that apparently Sheffield United, 'Never Say Die' attitude.

Wardy seems to have the makings of becoming a bit of a cult hero at the Lane too.

If I was managing another Championship or even Premier League team and I could take one player from us. It would be Monty. He is brilliant at the job he is sent out to do and never gives up and will run 'til the cows come home. Hence why he is my favourite player.

Without reducing this thread to another Monty bashing topic I cannot for the life of me understand any supporters championing Monty as their favourite player!
I am at a total loss to what he brings to the team except one dimensional play, he gives the ball away with increased regularity and cannot pass water.

I do like Monty, always have done, but yes, he is limited. He needs more skilful players around him. At the level we've been at since the time of Abraham, we've had fuck all skill in midfield, save for one season when we won fuck all despite looking good.

We had fuck all skill or guile in midfield when we went up, really.

He cannot create anything, his final ball is generally out of play or direct to the opposition, he gives away stupid fouls around his own 18 yard box and generally runs around like a headless chicken match in match out!

His job isn't to be creative, but he can pass a ball to the right man. Sometimes even the left man. As a defensive midfielder with nothing much in front of him, he and the rest of the defence are always going to be under pressure. Monty's best as a Souness type. A stopper, but higher up the pitch than effectively being a third centre back.

He is the favourite of many on here because he typifies the current United squad IE VERY ORDINARY and most of the clappers allude to mediocrity as the way forward!

What gives you that thought? Unless you don't like reality, of course.

My favourite player at present - undecided but Ward & Simonsen are probably the better players, Morgan fairly dependable, and thats about it! The rest of them have a hell of a lot to prove!
Once was a day when you asked Blades supporters favourite goalie Kelly or Tracey now unfortunately we don't have that luxury!!!

Am I allowed to still like a bag of pork scratchings before the match, or have they decided against them now? Can they tell me who to vote for, when to breathe and when to shit, when to laugh and when to cry? Must I go to the pub that they do before each match so I can worship at the altar of their opinion? Am I allowed to go to the pub, or must I spend the three hours before each match practising taking my shoes off for a protest, just in case?

I thought this thread was asking for people's favourite current player, not a critique of other people's choices, or a general dig at a player you don't like. I am well aware that we have got rid of some good players in the past few years. Please allow me to pick who and what I like without having to do as I'm told, because frankly I will do what I like anyway. I liked Bob Booker, and he wasn't exactly Pele, was he?

I liked Bob Booker, and whilst he wasn't exactly Pele, he did contribute to the team Goals, Assists and a general feelgood factor - Difference in Bob Booker and Monty is that everyone who went to the lane liked Bob Booker but Monty is Marmite to the fans!
I can't for the life of me see what he brings, my opinion ( and many more) personal choice, but if it was a choice between Bob Booker and Monty as a favourite I know who would come out on top!

Just as the Monty lovers have their own opinion, I and many like minded folk have our opinion - we do not 'think' Monty is very good, he is being paid a vast sum of money (in relative terms) to be not very good, he will not and has not improved in any of the basics of the game and yet he is lauded by many !

You make an important point here, If your job depends on your team choices you see things in a very different light to a fan simply going along to be entertained. Successful teams are about balance and stolid characteristics are a vital part of this, I like Monty for the character he shows, he knows he's not the most talented but by god he is determined to work the hardest and be the fittest. More's the pity these characteristics aren't more widely held in this nosediving country of ours.

Having said this there are still issues that I utterly fail to see a manager's reasons for, the one that has wound me up the most in recent years was Warnock's insistence in playing Jags in centre mid and not at centre back, I couldn't at the time and still can't get my head around why he did that.

I think he wanted a deep lying midfielder who'd win all the headers in that area. It's rather useful in this division. David Moyes started with the same plan for Jags at Everton before realising he'd bought an England centre back. Dozy fecker.

When threads descend into sarcaism and abuse regarding other members' opinions it just detracts from the whole point of being on a Blades forum for me.

Back on topic though....Monty wouldnt be one of my favourite players, although I dont dislike him. I just prefer to watch players who can get you off your seat (i.e. Wardy, Willo). Thats not to say I dont appreciate the job Monty does, but to pick him as a favourite player must be purely down to his commitment and passion.....rather than his technical attributes.
