Wycombe match - just not clinical enough

"on the plus side Adams Park is a lovely little ground" and "the stewards were friendly" well that's some comfort then as our great start to the season starts to fade. Were there nicely tended flower beds on the roundabouts too ?

Forgot to mention the two Red Kites circling above the ground. That was another highlight.

A very poor mistake gifted them a goal and changed the game. Until that point United were cruising and I am sure would have gone on to win easily. Suddenly Wycombe had more confidence and then put people behind the ball and hassled and harried. They did a good job of shutting out midfield down and stifling us. However, they were poor and we have no excuses. We controlled the game and created chances. But we were not ruthless enough. I agree entirely with Loughboro that a lack of clinicality cost us. We were a bit unlucky (Ched's shot and Doyle's effort) but we had chances and should of buried them. We had little composure in the final third, but still managed to create a handful of chances. Evans missed a sitter, Cresswell and Maguire could have done better with headers and Doyle/Lowton fluffed chances when in great positions. Poor result yesterday. At the end of the day you have to get the ball in the back of the net and we failed to do that.

Otherwise thanks for the report, hope it's not a foretaste of things to come, 'cos 5 other teams have beaten Wycombe recently.

I take your point but i think there's enough in this thread about United's shortcomings to be able to mention other aspects of the game as well. I want to reiterate that the stewarding was really good. We rightly heavily criticise heavy handed stewarding at other clubs (and our own) so it's worth pointing out when a club gets it right even if we did lose the game. The United following must have been nigh on 2000 and probably the biggest away following at Adams Park for some time. The stewards didn't panic, didn't overreact and dealt with stuff in a good humoured fashion that turned potential flashpoints into good natured banter. They should be used as an exemplar of how it should be done. Let's face it they were the only professional and effective outfit operating in the ground on Saturday so we may as well give 'em a mention!

There was an incident close to me where two blokes squared up to each other and were shouting and the stewards did nowt. The whole pantomine lasted for a good 3 or 4 minutes whilst mates held each other back, they exchanged angry words etc and the stewards just looked on. Even after shouts from the fans the stewards just laughed and sat and did nothing. I think that a steward could have easily calmed down the handbags, but they did nothing and some of us had to watch this performance when we'd rather have been watchig the game.

Fair enough. I suppose you can only call it as you see it. However, it's the first time I've ever walked up to a ground and had at least three stewards say "Welcome to Adams Park, hope you have a good day!". Better than the usual knuckle dragging neanderthals and Nazi sympathisers in high-vis jackets that I come across at most grounds!

They were absolutely enormous. My little 'un claimed he saw one of them pluck a small bird out of the sky but I think that was a bit of artistic license as a sparrowhawk had a goldfinch in my mum's garden the week before and he just wanted to have seen something similar happen!

Red kites were reintroduced to the Chilterns area a few years ago. There are hundreds of them across Oxfordshire and Bucks.

As for the stewards, I suspect that they didn't intervene because they weren't old enough. From where we were sitting, about 50% of the stewards were about 15 and wearing jackets seven sizes too big.

I was near the handbags incident and it fizzled out. If the stewards had got involved it may have escalated. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I quite enjoyed the game, but even Mrs Crouchy was able top spot that we were clueless in the final third. Very disappointing.
