Worst reception for an oppo player at BDTBL?

Gary Ablett (RIP) when he came to the Lane with Birmingham in 96/97. He had been on loan with us the season before and chosen to join Blues over us in the summer. He got dog's abuse.

(He was part of a team at the back end of 95/96 that I was always confident would do the job - not many United teams in my team have felt like that! The following year was definitely a case of what could (and should) have been...)

I was disappointed Jebbo went and still think the abuse he gets on here, plus the people deciding he's shit forever is/are odd.

But fuck me, people can boo, abuse (within legal bounds) whoever they like at the matches. It's a game that we all obsess over, we are all daft already. Being a cunt to the opposition is fun

Depends on the player. Some revel in being the the target of the home crowd. And milk it.

When taking a corner Mike Summerbee used to put the ball the wrong side of the line because he knew it drove the opposition fans crazy.

And he loved it.

And in an era when defenders went right through opposition forwards he returned the compliment in spades.

Vardy usually gets a decent amount of stick, which of course he thrives on, although usually it’s reasonably good natured ‘banter’ as opposed to outright hate in the case of Ainsworth, Tarrico etc.

Dean Hammond for his excellent contribution towards unseen work 👏 😆

Mauricio Taricco always got dogs abuse because he's a twat.
Gareth Ainsworth always got dogs abuse, also because he's a twat.

Did Ainsworth ever play against us in the League at the Lane after he crippled Dane? I seem to remember he was always conveniently injured, even that day Sid Whitehouse stormed the Port Vale coach I don’t think he played in the game.

Yep - as I recall everytime he went near the ball the crowd shouted "Freak".

Quite honestly unacceptable behaviour from us for something that Crouch was unable to control.
Wouldn't class making fun of someone's height the same as, say, aiming monkey chants at a black player, but quite a few players have said negative chants have damaged their mental health. Think Jason Lee said people singing "he's got a pineapple on his head" was one of the reasons he retired.

Nevertheless, Crouch came to own jibes at his height- "If I wasn't a footballer I'd probably be a virgin" is a favourite quote of mine 🤣

Yes, albeit without the history of abuse of others due to their race.

Jason Lee had full control over his hairstyle. Any jokes he got were of his own making.

The whole stadium chanting "Lee Hughes is a murderer" for nearly the whole match will take some beating.
I was at that game sat at front of kop. He sneered at the fans as he warmed up and seem to remember stewards stopping people getting onto pitch who would have probably attacked (the murdering c*nt).

I still think Ainsworth is my number 1 who's due a good booing/shoeing though but it's never quite worked in our favour over the years

Yes, twice. He did play in the game you mention in 1997-8, and he played for Wimbledon when they beat us 1-0 in 2000-1. He also played against us in games at Walsall in 2001-2 and QPR in 2005-6.

Grealish got a fair amount of stick when he played for Villa and Citeh. I seemed to remember him being subbed as Furious George wiped out his presence, that, with the crowd abuse he seemed to just give up. It was his falling over at a whisp of wind that wound everyone up mostly. He's another one who is actually quite a decent bloke tbh.

Not when he came back but George Long when he played for us was the worst I've experienced. A young keeper in his early 20's getting booed everytime he touched the ball was a disgrace. Think it was a early season game in our first season but in the championship under wilder, must have made a mistake early on I can't remember fully.

Surprised no ones gone for Vardy

Reflects how much Ainsworth and Curren are hated

That’s what I heard. A coward on and off the pitch. These days one of the twatterari on Sky Sports and Five Live
