I was in the same stand Silent

I was at the far end. At the time I didnt think it was possible for anyone to score direct from a corner. After celebrating the goal I was thinking that one of our players headed in Woody's corner so I asked my dad "Who scored?". I was stunned when my dad replied "Woodward"

Agreed - from the right hand side he used to cut across the ball - in effect making the ball go straight as against out swinging.

Quite surprised modern day footballers don't practice this and do it - he could drop a corner right on peoples heads.

Pure quality - pretty decent penalty taker too.

Lorimer was good but nowhere as good as Woodward and not as hard a shot as Woody.
Another thing I liked about Woody was his arrogance, he wasn't overtly arrogant, it kind of simmered under the surface because he knew his own abilities.
Agree with you on modern methods of kicking.
To me there is a lot of use with the inside of the foot which is the easier way for accuracy, as against the instep which provides more power but more expertise.
A bit like the goal keeping coaching, parry don't catch, you might drop it.
Personally in my eyes that's coaching to the lowest common denominators and shouldn't be entertained in professional or higher amateur football.
Apologies, waffled on there but I'm sure you know they don't call it the 'Beautiful Game' for nothing.

woodys corners always hit with pace and usually bang on the head of mick jones in the 60s especially the one on boxing day 66 against manure

I seem to remember a few almost identical ones involving flicked headers from Gil Reece at the near post from corners Woody had curled there with the outside of his foot .

I remember Woodward taking a corner v Luton Feb 6/2/71.he took the corner that went right over to Currie. Currie floated the ball back over the penalty area.
Then Woodward volleyed the ball to score it was a tremendous shot no goalie could have saved that. he scored twice in that match. that was a reght goal as well.
just over 30,000 watching.

I'm too young to have seen Woody play live but never tire of watching his dead ball exploits! (The MoTD video and the YTV one with the Baseball Ground goals - were favourites) To get that pace on a dead ball (that probably weighed a fair bit - not like you 99p fly-aways that they use today ) is special.

Agreed - Lorimer was good and was part of a good Leeds team even though the team was as dirty and cynical as any team has even been. People think Bremmner was the worst but Johnny Giles was a sly b'stard.

Woody had great variety to his game - for me he was a complete footballer and my 2nd favourite at the time - sorry woody (and Mrs Woody if you are reading this) - TC could just do magic !

Great memories of woody and he was my inspiration to taking penalties - right foot, kick through the ball, to GK bottom left hand corner hitting the side netting inside the goal. I only ever missed three and it was down to always putting it into the same place.........cheers Woody

Agree with all of that. Johnny Giles was the worst of the lot in the Leeds team. TC the best I`ve seen for the Blades. Woody the best winger.

It’s a very different ball these days, much lighter. I suspect they’re easier to manipulate when dribbling or turning but harder to control when you’re hitting a powerful longer ball. Tbh, I’ve not played with the most modern balls, I’d love to have a kick around with one just to see what they’re like, as long as I don’t have to run much.

Anyone remember a corner where woody went to take it and him and currie looked to be having an argument as who would take it. Woody appeared to walk off in a huff to about 30 yds out. Currie dropped the ball on his foot for woody to hit ( cant remember if it went in, think it did )

I remember hanging on to those white railings at the front of the kop as a young lad , where all the youngsters used to go , just behind us we’re the old guys with flat caps , and when woody took a corner they would shout “ Watch the sen keeper he can score from there “ I used to think to myself as a lad how the hell can you score from a corner, and when I saw him do it for the first time it just amazed me , I was so in awe of this man as a young kid , And still am , never forgotten Alan .
