Missed him. Got there just for kick off. One of my heroes as well.
 
I remember woody hitting the cross bar and he cracked it, another time hit the bar again and it was ages before it stopped rattling.
A better striker of the ball I've yet to see in a blades shirt.
Flynn should feel honoured to wear that number 7 shirt.
 
my hero , worshipped this man , always sticks in my mind no wonder he could hit a ball got in changing room on a school trip and he had thighs like optimus prime
 
I've seen players knocked out cold blocking his shots, goals scored direct from corner kicks, he could hit a ball with both feet and he even scored a header once too, looks like he has lost a yard or two of pace going to the corner flag though ;) He really should have won many England caps just a shame Ramsey's teams never played with out and out wingers.

Woody was one of the best players I've seen in a Blades shirt, without doubt. But England class? I don't think so. Ramsey's teams always had width but provided by full backs pushing on or the likes of Alan Ball going out wide.
Traditional wingers (better than Woody) never performed well at international level, English fixation with this was always showed up for its limitations by more technically advanced teams after around 1962.Hence Ramsey's then revolutionary 4-3-3.

Watching Woody today walk down that right wing towards the Kop I had a vision of him running down that wing waiting for that inch perfect pass from TC drop over his shoulder, taking it on before burying it in the bottom corner.

With that vision it seemed sad to see him today. Maybe it's because we are all getting older. Thanks for all the memories Woody.

I made no comparison whatsoever between Bally and Woody. Try reading again and point out where I did.
Bally was a fine footballer BTW, but not often when playing against Sufc.
 
He would have got a lot more caps if he wasn't playing for United - just like joe shaw, hodgy, TC etc etc - the FA have never liked us or thought much of us - you can be boringly useless, negative etc but if you play for one of the top 6 your England chances go up immeasurably.

I do remember Ball sitting on the ball when arsenal spanked us by 5 I think and then TC returned the favour when we turned them over at the lane (same score if I remember right) - he might have been a world cup winner but I never saw why people raved about him - and to think it might have been Keith Kettleborough in the 66 squad instead of him if he hadn't fallen out with John Harris (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/o...-the-1966-england-football-squad-1816601.html).
 
Agree with all the complimentary comments about Alan Woodward - certainly a hero of mine when he played for us. One of United'd greatest players - how often did you see Badger to Currie in our half, Currie long ball to Woodward on the wing, Woodward easily beating their full back then crossing to Jones, Tudor or Dearden - goal! Great memories, always supposing age hasn't distorted them! How nice to see him back at the Lane after so many years in the US, I hope he enjoyed coming over. It is probably a decision I will live to regret - in fact I'm regretting it already - not to take in the Gillingham match (so nerve wracking listening on Blades Player) and attend the 125th anniversary dinner.

At his peak I recall calculating he either scored or assisted 75 per cent of our goals. All in top two divisions I believe.

What on earth am I doing in Rio when he's at Bramall Lane?! Missed an exciting game too. Good to have easy access to S2 4SU though, in particular "Ratings" and Deadbat' s report.

I remember one goalkeeper taking a Woody shot in the chest and ending up a few yards backwards on his backside.....when he played for the Tulsa Roughnecks they called him "boomer". I guess we never appreciated the sound at a noisy Bramall Lane.

I did a 6 part article of Woody's goals and assists for Flashing Blade about 12 or 13 years ago. The highest number of assists by him for one season was 29 in the 1969-70 season (he also scored 21 goals)

Would that be at Carrow Road in August 1970? My Norwich supporting mate's dad told me that he recalled a powerful shot by Woody that hit Norwich's keeper Kevin Keelan on the chest. When I was looking at the Green Un report of that match at the Sheffield Archives 12/13 years ago, it stated that Keelan was so shaken by the impact of the shot on his chest, he had to have a lengthy treatment by the sponge and bucket man
