When life was simpler

When i’m feeling nostalgic, I stick on this video from Sufcbabe07.

especially the lad shouting “GOTTA MAKE A CHOICE NOW MCCABE” and the woman at the end saying “sack the bastard”.

Don't you love our Sheffield ladies ?? I used to Thursday nights grab a granny at Tiffany's or Fridays at the embassy, there'll be a few on here remember.

Night games were the best stood on the kop only lit with a few 150w light bulbs and glare of the floodlights. Strange how those tealights in the kop roof were turned on and off seemingly at random before kick off. Always the smell of Bovril and tobacco smoke mingling with the smell on the work clothes of men straight there off a shift in the steelworks. The flickering of matches lighting fags all round the ground and cigarette smoke curling up over the roof of the old John St stand. Magical times as a young kid, you knew the game was nearly done when the buses started waiting on Shoreham St and round onto Cherry St to take fans the short run to Flat st and Pond st. Them were the days (60's), could be home to Wincobank in half a hour on the bus, in those days if a bus went out full the inspector would be on the phone to have a duplicate service there in 5 mins from the Leadmill garage. Imagine that not having to wait in the freezing cold for the next bus home to turn up a hour later.

Used to live in Lincolnshire, and spend the weekend with my nan in Frecheville.

She always used to let me have a good chomp on her Brazil nut toffees, and then after that she always sent me off to the match with some sweets as well.
Brazil nut toffees! Forgot about them beauties!!

I seem to remember Brian Robson standing on the touchline with a drink on a tall table next to him - I don't think it was water ;)

I'm wondering if that was the 1993-94 season?

I distinctly remember a tarzan yell as Bryan Gunn (Norwich) was running up to take a goalkick - he had long straggly blonde hair at the time. That was also the season we had a drum that we used to chant to, like something out of a King Kong film, and the lone bugler who was awful at first, but improved as the season progressed 😂

About the only memorable thing that happened that season really, other than the opening day (3-1 win) and the 2-0 win over Newcastle where we thought we were safe 😔
I covered that Newcastle game for the Independent on Sunday. My report ended: “The jubilant home fans were singing ‘The Blades are staying up.’
And now you’ve got to believe them.”
That went well.

saturdays started at the ball inn ground watching the young uns who would soon be exciting us
before the downhill walk to the traffic lights on queens road , counting how many away coaches had come as we strolled to the Park , just going through a turnstyle was when it got serious,

Though the early years of me attending The Lane ( from 1977 ) weren’t our most successful years they were great times for me as a young supporter .Away from the team , able to stand with your mates even if you were late into a game , surges on the Kop or John St after a goal & been able to go to away games at the drop of a hat & the cameraderie around this . Yes rose tinted glasses but I enjoyed the match day a lot more than nowadays and I definitely did live for the weekend or next match day back then , but age also playing its part in there too !
My best earliest memory other than my first game against Palace in Sept 77 ( 0-2 defeat ) was beating Liverpool in League Cup 1-0 in 78 . At the time that was probably the biggest attendance I’d seen at The Lane & at that time the League Cup had some gravitas & top sides played there best 11 & they were the current European Cup Winners ,
A year or two later I was lucky enough to be a ball boy for a couple of seasons & at that time got to run out across the hallowed turf across the pitch in front of the team across the pitch was something else ..unforgettable & still fills me with pride ..
Simpler times ..but yes great times ⚔️⚔️⚔️

I'd probably go for Chocolate bar prices and Channel 5 softcore Fridays.
Used to love the erotic thrillers on TV, never knew when the good bits were coming on so of watching alone you had to stay halfway up the runway, rubbery but not rigid, if u like

View attachment 215744I have been on every part of that ground - but the best was the old terrace next door to the away fans, always a brilliant atmosphere and a great laugh (especially watching your mate getting frogmarched around the pitch during the game :) ) ... and also the Pie and Oxo club at half time.
The best 👌👌⚔️.. it was probably me gettin frogmarched 😂

These 2 games got me hooked.....
Blades ever since .....
I was too young to drink but I remember my older mate having a beer sat in seats
