Was wondering how long before this thread title :)

Watching motd last night(well this morning) there werent many teams playing 442. Maybe we should try more 433 with Whitehouse coming into midfield and Murphy and Flynn/Blackman just off kitson. Left back needs sorting though. Its been the week link for a year now

Ah but one mans 4-3-3 is another mans 4-5-1...which is good for me, but many see the negatives of adapting the formation when you're under the cosh

Its one of the most challenging times for wilson has manger, no of them are performing consistently, so you don't know what too play.
But give him chance to sort it out

West brom played 4 3 2 1 which worked for them they were very unlucky that reading got 3 in last 8 mins

so we drew even with an extra player?? :D
we are overrun in the middle all the time.. two versus three.. kmac is a ball player, you need legs to support him and doyle doesn't have them

and what an outcry there was because he tried something different. Some fans moan because he doesn't change things and then moan when he does.

Don't get me wrong,we are poor at home at the moment and something needs to change or we will blow promotion but as soon as change happens and we revert away from 442 some fans go into meltdown.

Blackwell used to play 451 alot away from home with great success but he didn't half take a slagging from fans for being negative(a bit like Wilson got slagged off for being defensive and winning one-nil earlier in the season)

For me,I'd like us to go back to what we were doing at the beginning of the season- focus on a clean sheet and nick a goal

The very first thing that would happen, is if we weren't in front after 35 minutes a section would begin chanting 4-4-2.

The problem we've got at this level is that we seem to be coming up against teams set up with one up front and crowding the midfield. This preys on two general weaknesses in our side: out midfield and defence (McDonald aside) lack composure on the ball and there's not enough movement off the ball.

How many sides now play 4-4-2 with three fixed banks like we do? Not many. My main issue with Wilson is that he's too conservative and comes across as being so afraid of the consequences of a decision going wrong that he won't take the chance that it might go right.

In Kitson we've got a forward capable of holding the ball up - why not put in three attacking players behind him? Flynn, Blackman and Murphy are all comfortable on the ball and could look to make something happen. This would then put a lot of pressure on the full-backs but if it worked, it would shift the balance of control in United's favour.

Balham's 4-2-3-1 when everyone is fit

Long
McMahon Maguire Collins Higginbotham/Hill/LJF
Doyle* McDonald
Flynn Blackman Murphy
Kitson*
Subs: Howard, Hill, Westlake, Whitehouse*, McFadzean, Ironside*, Porter

*Between now and the end of the season I'd want to see Whitehouse and Ironside pushing Doyle and Kitson for their places.

That same section is probably made up of the "stop fannying arahnd 'n gerrid forrard" brigade. Dinosaur fans wanting dinosaur football.

amazed at people calling for wilson's head. Sometimes I'm ashamed to say I'm a blade because of the people on here. I know that when I come on here after we've lost at the weekend, somebody will be wanting wilson sacked.

I'd love to say to people we are great fans and always get behind the team but it seems we're working hard to get a reputation as fickle, moaning gets and the fans berating long after his mistake just goes to prove it. Disgusting attitude from some "supporters" on here, I sometimes think they would still be moaning if we were top of the premier league.

Amen.

As opposed to the "cut inside, pass it sideways, work the triangles...oh, we've lost the ball" battalion.

Good effort. I prefer "so called" supporters myself but just using the understated "supporters" works quite well.

As for "Sometimes I'm ashamed to say I'm a blade because of the people on here.", that's a particularly poor rant as your "problem" it so easily solved!

yeah sorry "so-called Supporters". You've got to admit, it does seem very harsh wanting "wilson out" every time we lose. I'm sure sacking wilson isn't the answer, that's all I'm saying

Sorry I seem to have forgotten how to read as I can't make head nor tail of this bit

I think the fact that we play 4-4-2 has been more of a problem for our opposition than for us over this season and last... the win ratio shows that.

But... the problem that we have, is in the games against Brentford and Hartlepool (can't speak for Yeovil as I've only watched the highlights) we have struggled or have been slow to adapt our game to counter the opposition.

Before Wilson came in, many people used to complain that from Blackwell to Adams we worried about the opposition too much and set ourselves up to counter the opposition. Now because of 3 defeats in a season we have to play the same system as other teams...

4-4-2 is not without faults, but if its what generally works then why change.

If Wilson switched to a system which created more chances and was generally more entertaining, but we lost the next 4 games narrowly (even being the better side), would you want it?

We've won fewer than half our games this season which would suggest that it's becoming less effective.

Spot on. That's where the manager should be earning his money.

Not the same system as other teams - a system which I feel would betters suit the players we've got.

4-4-2 is not without faults, but if its what generally works then why change.
It does "generally" work but we've not beaten a side in the top 6 again this season which would suggest that if we were - heaven forbid - to end up in the playoffs then once again we'd struggle.

Actually - Wilson's record vs top 6 sides is now P18 W3 D7 L8 F11 A20. That is unacceptable, even more so when you look at the home games: P8 W2 D4 L2 F7 A10.

If Wilson switched to a system which created more chances and was generally more entertaining, but we lost the next 4 games narrowly (even being the better side), would you want it?

You can't take that sort of thing in isolation. It's like me asking you whether you'd be happy with us playing the same system over the next four games and losing them all narrowly - would you be confident that we'd turn it around?

I want to see some evolution in our play and have a belief that the side is improving. I don't get that at the moment.

Maybe not but having a few shots on target in a home game against a mid table side is what we should be expecting. I was pissed off saturday that we really never tested their keeper all game.

Wouldn't happen though. Always amazes me that people keep coming up with this "if we are the better team but lose" scenario. Usually (and I say usually because it obviously isn't 100% of the time) the team that plays best wins.
Should we create "more chances" in the next few games I suggest we would win more than we don't. It's the "not creating any chances that" that did for us on Saturday.
