Do you think we will ever see our beloved blades back in the premiership and if so how long do you reckon it will take us to get there?
I know we have done it before in the past but it is a lot bigger task now with all the stupid money in the game, parachute payments etc nowadays.
Unless this prince spends big on players i can see us maybe in league 1 for the next few years or possibly the championship in 2 or 3 years time at a push.
Did the prince say 5 years for the prem? :)

The rate we are going we will definately make the Prem,.......the Conference Premier.

football goes in cycles.. at some point the stars will align and a couple of fluke buys and we'll be going back up the table. i remember saying to my mate when we bought Micheal Brown that it would be a turning point
we still haven't replaced him.. coincidence?? doesn't matter what level you play it.. the top teams always have a couple of outstanding individuals that are simply irreplaceable (talismen).. we haven't got 'one'

Only Mick Rooker comes close from the current set up

Probably not.

Forest, Leeds and Wednesday are three of the 'biggest' clubs outside of the Premier League and they've currently spent a combined total of 37 years without top flight football.

It's a long long long long long way back. Especially when you factor in that we would have to finish in the top two in the Championship to get promoted.

We're some years away from a playing standpoint.

However, surely it's just a matter of time before PL2 or something of that ilk and the end of that nasty relegation/promotion malarky between the "big boys" and the scum. We might sneak in as one of the "big clubs" because it won't be football considerations when the places are handed out.

You are bloody daft if you think we will sneak in on a vote like that.
It's bound to be the "Massive" that get such a nod ahead of us lot, surely.

I can see two lots of 20 (maybe two lots of 18) so would see 36 to 40 clubs being invited. These things aren't decided on things like footballing ability. Potential for getting bums on seats in front of the telly are the only criteria the wankers are interested in.
I can see it breaking down something like below (or even some amalgamations being forced).
All completely WRONG but not beyond the realms of possibility the way things are shaping up.

Obvious candidates:
2 Manchester, 2 Liverpool, Arse, Spurs, Chelsea, Villa, Leeds, Newcastle,

Next tier:
Sunderland, Birmingham, West Ham, Pigs, Ipswich, Norwich, Forest, Stoke, WBA, Wolves, Us, Cardiff, Swansea, Southampton, Pompey, Hull, QPR, M'boro, Bolton, Derby, Blackburn, Coventry, Leicester, Bristol City.

Unfairly fucked off:
Fulham, Palace, Wigan, Blackpool, Charlton, Huddersfield, Yeovil, Donny, Dingles, Bournemouth, Brighton, Millwall, Burnley, Watford.

Sorry boys, perhaps we'll need feeder clubs: THE REST.

Yes. As negative as I feel about things currently, it's a simple fact that we have the potential to get there as proved before.

The bit I doubt is our ability to ever stay there.

also the PL forced the FL to change a lot of things in Academy level so they can make it easier for them pinch the best prospects from the FL. The PL are greedy and dont even care for the England national team

I think if this happens you would need to add Celtic and Sevco (Rangers) to this list

We likely will get back up but I can't see it in less than 8-10 years. The big unknown is TV revenue. If it declines for whatever reasons the clubs outside the top 6-10 in the premier league will find things very difficult, and parachute payments will be downgraded severely. Can't happen? Look at this stat from a LinkedIn article to see how things are changing "3. YOUTUBE REACHES MORE U.S. ADULTS AGED 18–34 THAN ANY CABLE NETWORK"

interesting comment about footballing ability, more bums on seats ! then what about the MASSIVE ?:D

The Premier League has been going 22 years this season and roughly half of the 92 have played in it at one point or another.

Given that we are easily one of the 46 teams with the greatest respurces, the chances are that we will get in the PL again within the next 22 years. So if you expect to live at least another 22 years, the answer is yes.

I make it actually slightly more than half. The list:

1. Reading
2. Middlesbrough
3. Derby
4. Arsenal
5. Chelsea
6. QPR
7. Fulham
8. Chelsea
9. Charlton
10. Palace
11. Wimbledon
12. West Ham
13. Spurs
14, Man Utd
15. Man City
16. Bolton
17. Wigan
18. Oldham
19. Southapton
20. Portsmouth
21. Watford
22. Hull
23. Blackburn
24. Blackpool
25, Burnley
26. Leicester
27. Liverpool
28. Everton
29. Norwich
30. Forest
31. Barnsley
32. SUFC
33. Wednesday
34. Stoke
35. Ipswich
36. Sunderland
37. Newcastle
38. Birmingham
39. Villa
40. Coventry
41. WBA
42. Wolves
43. Leeds
44. Bradford
45. Swindon
46. Swansea
47. Cardiff

That's much too simplistic, isn't it? Only three new teams can be admitted per season and it's fair to say that those recently relegated out of the Prem have a far better chance at re-entering than a new team being promoted, due to the financial advantage they get. I don't agree with the statement that it's more likely that we will play in the top flight in the next 22 years, than won't.

If I get chance later today (probably won't) I might look at this in more detail.

But what the history shows is that there is a fair churn between teams going up from the 2nd tier. It's not always the teams that get relegated that go straight back up, otherwise, you would expect the number of teams to have played in the PL to be less than 30, not 47.

Since we got relegated from the PL in 2007 (which we can take as a cut off as to when serious amounts of money started getting involved), the following teams have been promoted:

WBA (2 times)
Stoke
Hull ( 2 times)
Wolves
Birmingham
Burnley
Blackpool
Newcastle
Swansea
QPR
Norwich
Reading
West Ham
Southampton
Palace
Cardiff

So, in 6 seasons, there was a maximum of 18 different teams that could have been promoted (if no club was promoted more than once) and a minimum of 3 (if the same 3 teams were always relegated and promoted). The actual total is 16.

Of 18 relegated PL teams - and despite all their financial advantages - only 4 went straight back up (WBA in 2010, Birmingham in 2009, Newcastle in 2010 and West Ham in 2012).

There really is a far greater churn between the PL and ther 2nd tier than one would expect.

I should add that, in those 6 seasons, the following other teams played in the PL:

1. Sunderland
2. Blackburn
3. Liverpool
4. Everton
4. Man Utd
5. Man City
6. Bolton
7. Wigan
8. Derby
9. Villa
10. Arsenal
11. Chelsea
12. Fulham
13. Spurs
14. Middlesbrough
15. Portsmouth

So even in just the past 6 seasons, we have seen a third of the league clubs play in the PL.

All well and good, but we know the laws of averages do not apply to SUFC.

Over the span of 25 years if you play in 3 FA Cup semi finals, 1 League Cup final and appear in the playoffs 7 times, you'd expect to have won one of them.
