In the aftermath of last week, more media and fan focus has been directed at CW with some saying he was too harsh on Hendo. For me, he has been totally consistent. He has a 100% honesty based ethos that he wants throughout the team on and off the pitch. Duffy behaved in a way that was at odds with that and was quickly jettisoned back to the Championship. Hendo, much as I think he is a great prospect, could, to some, seem a bit too cocky and that is never going to work in the current setup.
CW has been open about his admiration for SAF and let’s look at the similarities there. Anyone, no matter how big their reputation became, if they crossed the line, was soon down the road - think Beckham, Robson and Keane. He always built the team and held it above the individual- I sense that CW has the same attitude and we will be the better for it. Some “superstars” might disappear but for those of you pining the loss of Duffy and wondering if DH is now off his food, I wouldn’t worry, the club and the team is all important and we’ll be fine. I think people can read too much into things, especially when a manager says something people aren't used to hearing, but pretty much all he said was that Hendo dropped a howler, which he did, and he also named some other players that should have scored, which they should have.

He didn't say anything that the fans, the pundits, and the players themselves, didn't already know. It's a great attitude that he has with respect to never being happy with losing and always focusing on what we could have done better. Anything more than that is just people reading into it what they want to hear.

If there aren't at least a few inflatable dinosaurs away at Watford, I'll be disappointed!

Think people are also misunderstanding the media and how they report on Chris Wilder.

Let’s take the format used on Talksport as an example.
Notice how it’s massively different to Beans and Roy’s podcast. Beans and Roy are 2 balanced individuals who give considered educated opinions.
The whole purpose of Talksport is to encourage feedback (callers, tweets and comments about them on forums like this).
So on a daily basis they look for any events that can be discussed, then before the show they decide who will give the extreme view in favour and who will give the extreme view against. Their personal opinion is irrelevant, they are paid to fulfil a role, the more controversial the better.

The 2 guys in the Beans podcast tend to have similiar views on most things whereas on Talksport the 2 presenters ALWAYS have polar opposite viewpoints on every thing they discuss, they ALWAYS have a blazing arguement, then ask callers to settle the score and tell them who they agree with and why.

Tonight Spurs have lost to Bayern, so they will discuss the Spurs manager Pochetino tomorrow.
Obviously he’s a very good manager but has just fallen short at winning things.
Tomorrow they’ll decide in advance who’s going to say Poch is the best manager in the PL, whilst the other will say he’s been a failure and deserves the sack.
Both view points are extreme and will likely encourage loads of callers. Their job is to put a strong case forward to support their view point.
The thing to remember it’s not their personal view, they are just doing their jobs to attract interest/ callers.

Danny Mills has said some belittling stuff about us....but it’s not his opinion....it;s just a wind up hoping for a reaction (and he got it..job done).
It was only last week he was belittling the Southampton v Portsmouth Derby saying it’s not even in the top 15 derbies in England.
He gave a list of bigger derbies and even said the Plymouth versus Exeter was bigger.

Let’s take journalism.
Writing a well balance educated piece should be the aim but in today’s world it’s boring and this type of journalist could lose their job.
Hence why many journalist try to write occasional controversial/ thought provoking pieces. It creates a reaction and gets them noticed.

Great post. I think this is also a huge contributing factor in where the country finds itself in terms of Brexit. Media coverage is so polarised in order to get more clicks that the general public has fallen in to either one extreme side or the other. There’s no middle ground, because well balanced journalism is dead.

I'd disagree on Danny Mills. You give far too much credit. His comments were honestly what he thought and were misinformed guff.

Him saying they are not the prettiest just shows that he hasn't watched us since 2006/07 and even then, we weren't like Wimbledon. I'd say we had a mixed style, it wasn't even out and out kick and rush then.

Chris can say and get away with anything at the moment, if we're struggling and things weren't going our way the press and a lot of fans would have had a go at him for what he said about Henderson.

I think there's a difference between believing in yourself and being cocky.
Henderson believes in his own ability, which is a necessary mental strength to have at the highest level. You can have both mental strength and be part of a team ethic.

Agree with you there. I guess there must be stuff going on behind the scenes that has caused the reaction from CW. Personally, whilst I applaud the ambition, I wouldn’t want a member of my team saying publicly that he wants to play for Manu - smacks of disrespect to his current club and squad. I’d rather he said something like “I want to use this opportunity to be the best I can and that means giving 100% every day to improve my game.” He is young but needs a mentor to have a word.

I think it’s a genuine warning to Henderson. “Be better or I will find better”

IPA has spoken about bringing in three more quality players in January and of the starting XI, Henderson has been one of the worst three performers.

Goalkeeper is also the only position where we haven’t spent any of the transfer budget since League One.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us upgrade in this position if Henderson makes further mistakes that cost us points.

I think the comment is brilliant man management.

Hendo is a big character, Wilder knows this & clearly knows better than anyone how to deal with him.

Likewise, i'm sure if it was one of the "quieter" lads in the dressing room who made the howler it would have been an arm around the shoulder rather than a public dressing down.

I’m sure Chris is actively looking for a keeper anyway after all Hendo is on loan and will clear off at the end of the season.

Make a great save and get praised of course is the correct way

Make the cardinal error of a ball through the legs AND hands which is the most basic of saves and get lambasted is also the correct way

I’m sure the search is intensifying

Henderson is an extrovert. Needs putting back in his box occasionally and what will work for him, won’t work for other players.

Wilder has managed him for a fair old while now and knows how to get the best out of him.

"If you want to be the best and play for Man U and England (which Hendo has publicly stated) he has to stop making howlers" or "I feel sorry for him, he's a great prospect and didn't deserve that stroke of bad luck"

"At this level, you simply have to take your chances. Name, name and name need to be taking the kind of chances we had today" or "Well, we'll keep plugging away and as long as the lads are giving their all, at least we'll struggle to the end of the season with sweat on our foreheads"

"All but one of our goals so far have been the result of errors. Whether it was name, name or name, we have to improve in that area" or "Hey, mistakes happen. I'm not going to criticise my players, they gave me their all today"

Wilder's way all the way for me.

Is it possible to buy a Bin Laden riding a dinosaur suit?

If your beer’s talking to you it might be worth considering going sober for October

I really don't get the criticism of Wilder - in my opinion it's just an example of excellent man management tailored to the individual (all the best man managers do this).
Wilder knows Hendo is a strong, confident young player with tremendous belief in his own ability. He also knows that he probably won't benefit from an arm around the shoulder and the softly softly approach. Dean has made mistakes before and is the first to own up and take responsibility. Wilder is simply challenging him to improve his game and knows he has the backbone to take the criticism. It also helps to keep him grounded in view of his lofty career ambitions.
On the flip side, Wilder wouldn't call out those with more "fragile" personalities in public (Leon Clarke for example).
Warnock used to do it well - if you've seen the documentary from a few years ago, Tonge is handled with kids' gloves, whereas Morgs will feel the force of a Warnock tirade (and give some back).
Also, see Ferguson and how he handled Cantona/C. Ronaldo compared to G Neville/Keane etc.

What people need to get is we are a Premier League Club now.. the column inches and airtime minutes are intimate now problem being is those inches and minutes need filling so every single minute detail is analysed publicly and then analysed again for thy be sake of it..

a great example of this and also the public perception is the tweet by Talksport

Sawyer just waffles shit to fill minutes the replies are the important part though the general public opinion is vastly contrasting

In a nut shell people talk shit and usually just to pass time and we need to get used to it

Natalie Sawyer on Sky Sports says CW's methods are an example of 'dinosaur management'. As a secondary school teacher I work in an industry that is run by idealists. These idealists spend little time in the classroom & often have classes that are amongst the most unruly in school. Some of you may think it is a myth that teachers cannot shout at kids anymore but I'm afraid in lots of schools across the country it's true.

Without sounding too big headed, I am a very good teacher, my methods are fairly 'Old School': every new class you pick out the bad lad & nail him/her good & proper. This sets a precedent & the naughty kid will never bother you again. When the class is scared of you then you can start to teach, have a laugh with them & build up relationships. Experience will inform a good teacher who needs bollockings, who needs an arm round the shoulder & how to deal with every individual in your care.
Back to Natalie who reminds me of one o do gooder type that never caused any trouble in her life so never warranted a good bollocking. These people think because they appreciated the 'modern' softly softly positive enforcement worked for her then that model should work for everyone. It doesn't. Many kids & adults (me included) need a much stronger old school method. If you do something wrong you get bollocked & then move on whilst addressing the reason you got bollocked.
What Natalie Sawyer's is advocating is one of the reasons this country is in such a mess, why many people grow up with a total disdain for authority.

You’ve fallen for it and it’s a massive pat on the back to Natalie Sawyer from her employers.
The format they use is proving to be a massive success because their viewing figures and tweets are going through the roof.
They are the most talked about stations in the UK and their presenters are told to give an extreme view to encourage publicity.

I’ve heard NS before and she’s a big fan of Chris Wilder but the format is that her and Danny Murphy must pick sides (their personal view point is irrelevant) then they argue as strongly as possible as to which one is right. Sawyer spent 5 minutes negatively criticising Wilder management of Henderson then Murphy was massively positive about CW’s treat of Henderson. Then they say “listeners ring and send us you tweets regards who you think is right”

The callers on the show are hand picked to ensure 2 agree with Sawyer and 2 agree with Murphy.
It’s not about accuracy and being balanced, it’s about hearing polar opposite views to a discussion subject.
-
The stations aim is to be controversial (being careful not to be libelist) to get a reaction. Brian the Blade is the type of presenter they’d like.
The real issue is that most of the UK population prefer this format instead of the considered opinions balanced viewpoint approach.
