Wilder's key mistake this season

Dropping Daniel Lafferty for Enda Stevens

There are certain games when Lafferty may have been a better choice, but for the most part; I disagree. I think Stevens has been an improvement, depsite his form dropping recently. (I think fitness and the fact he's been practically ever present partially explain his form)

Come on, Lafferty is not really good enough for this division but he should have got a few run outs at LWB to give Enda a rest.
We've no idea wether or not he is good enough because Stevens was undroppable. Enda made a great start to the season but really hasn't been good since the start of this year. When Lafferty has come on he's not looked out of his depth. He even had a good game against Leicester. Im not saying this has cost us a play off spot just seemed bizarre Lafferty never got a start.

Nah. As if it's Wilder's key mistake. It's not even close. Stevens is a better player but we need better than him too - undoubtedly.

I'm not sure Wilder's made a 'key mistake'. He's made a number of small mistakes and outnumbered last season by a long way in that respect. But it's a hard league, a new league. It's going to happen.

The main mistake for me is probably the January business. Leonard and Holmes have been a waste. Wilson has been hugely disappointing. But I can hardly blame Wilder too much for that. He's having to battle having a budget inadequate for the position we were in and aspire to be in. He can't pull a rabbit out of the hat every time.

Another mistake in my view is the amount of times he's gone with the deep 3 midfielders recently. I think it's helped cost us points at a crucial time.

He'll make less mistakes next season but if he has to continue battling against the tide we'll struggle to replicate this season. I also hope we see a return to the more attacking philosophy that served us well in the first half of the season. I'd hate for us to become cautious, or even 'normal'.

Agree 100% with your comment about 3 deep lying midfielders. We've abandoned 3-1-4-2 for 3-5-1-1 in recent weeks and it hasn't worked. 3-1-4-2 for Preston with Sharp and Duffy starting in their natural positions. Lets end the season on the front foot.

Birmginham have spent more sacking managers than we have players.

Another profitable year for our transfer fees.

LWB needs sorting seriously enda is shit end of. Anyone who disagrees is a fool.

I think there have been times where Enda has been pretty good.

There have been times where his standards have slipped too.

For whatever reason, he’s never been dropped or rested. I find that odd given the workload you demand of that role.

I hardly think Lafferty is out of his depth at this level, having played for Burnley at this level and being a N.I. international.

If he's made a key mistake, the answer is simple - James Wilson.

The weird thing is, last week Stevens was crap enough that Lafferty actually got brought on at wing back. Stevens at centre back then made a mess of defending the equaliser. Logic would suggest Stevens would miss out today on the back of that performance, instead he started as always.

Wilder's refusal to drop/rest Stevens or sub Clarke when he was out of form stand out a bit compared to the way he handles the rest of the players.

It just shows how poor the back up is in those positions that they have to play every game.

On reflection, I think not having more money, not spending that money on better players, and not having a big enough squad to rotate key positions, are the huge errors that have led to us only finishing in the top half of the table in our first season in the Championship after six years a level below it.

Lafferty is a good fullback but not so good as a wing back. He would fit in a back four which we should have used more often when it was apparent we were pursuing a lost cause with a back three on occasions.

Agree with most of that. CW has often spoken of building for the future. This explains the purchases of Leonard and Holmes, although in Holmes case the future is maybe a couple of years. I think it`s too early to pass judgement. My mind goes back to what I originally thought of Coutts. It took a fair while for him to achieve the fitness and confidence which enabled him to become the lynchpin of the team. Wilson was a short term impact signing which did not come off. How many times has that happened with young imports from Newton Heath ? Evans and Lundstram have kept L & H out of the team, but at least there`s competition for places. A guaranteed top half finish, above the pigs, well done Chris Wilder ! Not quite a spectacular season, but, for a first season back, a solid one.

I'm not sure how an almost 31 year old is building for the future.

Please put me down as a fool in your book.

I say this on the basis that anyone who believes that our weaknesses are all about a single player in a specific position has to possess a similar knowledge of the game of football to that of an Indonesion Fruit Bat.
