i would not get too gushy about CW pumping the air, kissing the badge etc etc...... he did exactly the same last year at Northampton and at various times at Oxford from what their fans say.

He is a manager that wants players, staff, fans all pulling in the same direction. This is how he does it, and it works. What it shows is a manager that wants to give his all for whatever club he is employed by. That in itself is refreshing in todays game.

The real test of this ' one of our own ' is when an offer comes in that quadruples his salary and gives him a 4/5 year contract..... Loyalty in todays game is non existent, unfortunately even for one of our own..

My brother is a good friend of Wilder. Known him since they were lads, and to call him a genuine blade is a understatement. Chris is as big of a blade than anyone, before he was made manager. My brother and me for that matter , are so happy for him. He's living the dream

Yes, after the players came over a short fat cross looking elderly gent came running towards us beating his chest in a threatening manner...it took a few seconds to realise it was a pumped up Lord Wilder...a jolly good night, maybe not the greatest football but a steely performance and a well deserved win. We're going to win it now I predict, Me happy today

Reading back, maybe my post came across badly, I am not naive enough to question how much of a Blade CW is, it is clear this is the club he loves, but i don't get too carried away when any manager/ player kisses his badge, punches the badge etc etc....... i tend to be a bit more cynical than most

Remember Danny Wilson could do no wrong during his first season at the Lane, likewise Clough. They were both sacked after the end of their second seasons in charge, when our performances slumped. Who's to say it will be different with Wilder?

OK the big difference is that we are likely to win promotion. But after that we'll be in a tougher league with less generous defences. Billy, if he remains first choice striker, could find his chances very limited. A top six finish like those achieved by NC and DW (in the seasons they were sacked) would be fantastic in the Championship, but what if we finish low down in the table? Will the fans who love Wilder today be as gushing in their praise when we're losing more than we're winning? I hope so but doubt it.

I also hope that enough money is made available to him. You aren't going to finish in the Championship's top 6 without investment that's...er...game changing.

I agree with this.... football fans are the most fickle of people. Me included. The fact is that at the moment we love CW. When things become ever tougher not one person will be bothered if he is a Blade or not.... The club will come before anyone ( unless you are Arsenal )

Whilst I don't doubt that Wilder is a big Blade, I do think that it only goes so far when you are involved professionally in the game. e.g. if Man United come calling, I really couldn't see him staying or even if a relegated Premiership club (Boro or Hull) offered him the job, I'm sure he would be very tempted.

It would be gutting, but personally, I wouldn't begrudge him furthering his career after what he has done this season.

However, give Unitedites the 'right man' who they genuinely believe in, and they will back him and his team to the hilt. They have done before and they will again.

OK, there will always be the odd dissenting voice and 'look at me pillock' but the majority will back them and the manager if they have respect for the Blades boss.

Whilst Blades fans can be fickle, they can also be incredibly loyal. I've seen both sides of the coin. I was there back in November 90 when we went 3 down late in the game in November down at Norwich when it was cold and pissing it down, we were nailed to the bottom without a win all season, and we looked doomed. Yet despite this, the fan's that day showed total devotion to Bassett with an impromptu chant of 'one Davie Bassett' which was straight from the heart. It was both majestic and a very touching show of loyalty from the Blades supporters that day, and it made me feel very proud of the club and it's supporters. I know Dave Bassett always remembered that moment.

Unitedites can do loyalty with bells on if there is genuine affection held for the manager, and I reckon CW would get it in spades if he had took United up. Certainly, it would take a lot more than 3 defeat's on the bounce to get the fan's to turn against him (not that any performance can't be questioned win, lose or draw) probably also helped in that he's one of our own.

You say that but in the season United got promoted from the Champ, the team were regularly booed off.

The real test of our support for Chris and the lads will be if we're bottom 3 after 10 games.

The best advice any of us can accept is to set our expectations low(ish), then watch the team adjust to the demands of the Championship. It won't take long to see who's good enough and who isn't, but if I were one of this squad I'd be eager to prove my worth next season. And does anyone think that Wilder hasn't already begun to plan for next season? He'll be doing his due diligence and considering who'll be the type of player who'll fit in here.

Good post. Bassett was probably the last manager to get that kind of unwavering support, and we did well for most of his time at the Lane. Warnock didn't, even in the season we were promoted to the PL. Danny Wilson had strong support from the fans in his first season, as did Clough, but that soon evaporated in their second seasons. Blackwell and Adams (both Blades, or at least with strong ties in Blackwell's case) were treated apallingly by the fans. I do hope you're right, and Wilder is given the same kind of support as Bassett, and doesn't end up subjected to the same treatment as Adams if we struggle next season.

it will be different because unlike the other incumbents he will have achieved something which gets you goodwill in harder times

Even if Wilder and the team struggled next season I'd still give him a better chance of getting us where we want to be long term than I'd give most managers. He's been constantly improving as a manager for years and there's no reason to think he won't continue to do so, learning from any mistakes he makes and adapting to a higher standard. His bond with the club also gives him a very significant starting advantage over any other potential manager.
